Governments & rich MNCs in the east and west are equally guilty of plundering and manipulating the economy.

It is up to its citizenry to "forced" her government to sprung into action with its active unified voices. Singaporeans are too debt ridden/selfish/short-sighted, etc...

Please read "The Historic Unfulfilled Promises" by Howard Zinn. Whereby he urges citizens to unite, organise itself, to question her government and take necessary steps to keep them in check.

So that 's it ? That's the secret ? Every impoverished nation should now have the key to riches. Just invite the MNCs in. They truth is , businesses will go where the returns are highest. Singapore had to make it worthwhile for MNCs to come here by giving them low taxes and a host of freebies. The education system had to to be tweaked to produce the right skills. Infrastructure had to be put in place. Foreigners here aren't doing us any favors. They are here because it is worthwhile. The minute it stops being profitable they will leave. We owe them nothing and they owe us nothing. We certainly don't have to kowtow to the likes of Madame Doreen. in the 70"s and 80"s our dear ex MM was routinely lecturing the western nations about the supremacy of Asian values ( frankly it was disconcerting for western educated singaporeans to read all that). Foreigners swallowed their pride and still came in because there was money to be made. We don't owe them anything beyond simple courtesy.

Professor Paul Krugman cited Professor Alwyn Young’s paper in his 1994 journal, The Myth of Asia’s Miracle.
Basically he compared Singapore performance to Soviet Union and concluded that Singapore growth was not substainable as GDP growth was contrained by 3 factors-capital, labour and total factor productivity,and that Singapore reached its peak in the 90+.

Alas,Nobel laureate Paul was wrong,as Singapore had an even greater self -taught economist MM Lee K Y who managed to overide the said two factors,capital and labour,by puming in billion of dollars of capital plus money through bonds sold to its citizen's CPF fund,and free flow of foreign labourers.
Not impossible?but PAP did it.

Not only is Singapore Govt investing its own assets. It is borrowing against citizens' CPF money to gamble in European bank stocks, last heard to the tune of 70% of our GDP. Do you call that investment? The Casino Fever has caught on.
