In Sydney, sporeans are less homesick.

- Chinatown very 'happening' at night , almost every friday they have night markets, can buy bbq pork there.
- long working hours are expected in certain industry / organisation., including weekend work. Sydneysiders probably work the longest hours in Australia, stress level can be high.
- Asians & Asian eateries everywhere.

i agreee....but melb is better more msian and spore food...and they open till late as well.....

only a handful in city....if not have to travel to Beverly hills

Ashfield, Campsie, Burwood, Hurtsville, chatswood all have late night chinese restaurant. City, chinatown, Superbowl opens till 2-3am, Kam tong opens till 5am I think. City extra at circ quay and pancakes on rocks 24 hours.

Hotpot as in 嘛辣火锅?Not sure if any opened that late. The one in Ashfield is not bad. The popular one is crystal palace, 水井房in the city. PRC mei mei works there, but I don't think they open late there, around 11 I say. She also said the soup are 回收unless you specified you want a new one. Just something you want to be aware of. Sydney definitely has more late night restaurant opened compared to 1995. ;) Burwood, try along burwood road, near westfield. There are definitely cafes there that opened late there. Mostly middle eastern. One of them even served sisha, hooka if that is what you are after. Its not just chinese influence if that is what you are thinking of, Kebab shops usually open late as well. If you are really desperate for food late at night, try Kings X. They will always be shops opened there. Harry's pie at Wollomoollo opens damned late as well.

I'm going to Ontario, Canada. Would be pleased to be acquainted with...ahem... like-minded migrants settled anywhere there.

Ontario is very big, which city did you choose? Canada has no job for new immigrant, and is very cold. Aren't you scare?

Hi guys,

I'm seriously contemplating about migrating to Canada. With an engineering degree, a postgrad diploma in teaching and 4 yrs of engineering project management experience in marine/oil&gas sector (plus 2 as a former teacher), I was told by a Canadian immigration lawyer that my chances of successfully applying for citizenship under the Skilled Worker category is pretty good. However, I'm a bit apprehensive about my chances of landing a job there.

I hope anyone who've migrated to Canada can enlighten me on the current job prospects and opportunities there. How long on average does a migrant need to wait before getting a job offer/interview? If possible, I would like to continue in the same sector in the same role in Canada. I often heard the opportunities are far greater compared to Sinkieland, but the priority given to Canadian citizen. Im just worried if theres any discrimination against migrants who recently became citizens. By the way, my qualifications are obtained in Singapore institutions, are they relevant and recognized over in Canada?

I hope somebody can help me out and enlighten me. Thanks!

Hi,

I think you can forget about "If possible, I would like to continue in the same sector in the same role in Canada. "

Seriously, in Canada they will always ask you if you have "North American" experience and any certifications in Canada. I know some fellow Singaporeans who were engineers in Singapore. One is a veteran in the oil and gas industry as well. Apparently you have to take the engineering exams to get fully qualified.

If you are lucky you might be able to get in touch with someone who has some links in the same sector but forget about getting the same role. Probably have to work as an apprentice of some kind first.

As for myself I am in Edmonton. I used to be a doctor in Singapore. Was a surgical trainee then quit to make hay while the sunshines in the private GP market. Finally moved last year. I always knew that it would be a long road for me to get licensed to practice medicine in Canada. So I just applied for all the best paying jobs in the "no experience required" listing in job bank.

I was lucky. Got a job within 1 month of arriving. I assemble windows on the assembly line at a windows and doors factory.

From what I have seen, those who keep to the thinking of "If possible, I would like to continue in the same sector in the same role in Canada. " find it hard to "find a job" in Canada. In fact they probably never find a job if they keep thinking that way.

You will have to eat humble pie, downgrade your expectations and get started somewhere, whoever is willing to give you that first break in whatever industry.

A lot depends what your objective in migrating is. Status is not something you really need much of in Canada. It is quite socialist and people are treated with respect and dignity regardless of what work they do.

Housing and cars are a lot cheaper as well so there is no need to really earn that much money at the beginning. Take it one step at a time.

The idea is to minimize the drain on your savings during the transition period. The sooner you get a job and get income the better. You can then take your time with less stress and worry to get the necessary qualification papers for the field you want to work in.

It is easier for locals to find jobs in professional fields because Canada values the local education paper qualifications while it does not value the ones from overseas. If you disagree with that kind of policy then better to stay in Singapore where it is the complete opposite. I prefer Canada to stay this way although it is disadvantageous to me as it benefits my children when they get their education here.

All the best

There is nothing wrong with that. Happiness does not require an individual to be a professional and/or make a lot of money. As long as he is comfortable, not stressed, at peace, and content, that is important.

Good Gawk! I think Canadian socialism must have reversed your thought process.. Let see how long nayr69sg can sustain his happiness while he is living in self-denial.
