A former chairman of a residents' committee who stole $26,000 from an elderly neighbour was jailed for four weeks today.

Lee Shwu Huah, 47, was chairman of the Kampong Glam Selegie RC at the time of the offences in April this year. She had pleaded guilty to three counts of theft of $1,000 each from Madam Agatha Au Que Yin, 81, by using her ATM card to withdraw money from her savings account on April 11 and 12.

Twenty-three other charges were taken into consideration.

The court heard that Lee accompanied Madam Au to DBSBank's Rochor branch on April 11 to apply for a POSB ATM card and kept it for safekeeping. Madam Au suffered from amnesia

True Incident Involving A Grassroots Leader.

A few years ago there lived this this "hardcore" grassroots leader. At the drinking table he was a free-loader.

One fine day at about 10.30 pm, he met our kakis at a watering hole after a National Day Istana Dinner.

One of our buddy, an elderly Baba wanted to shake his hand, as courtesy. It was a norm among us then to shake hands when we met.

These crazy grassroots leader quickly pulled his hand away and told that buddy that he had just shooked the hand of then PM LKY.

Naurally, we were all taken aback by his crude behaviour.

I then gently told that "half-insane" grassroots leader, that what he ought to do is to go home, chop that hand off with a chopper and have it preserved for posterity.

Imagine such people grassroots leaders around.

Anyway that constituency has long been removed from the electoral map and is now a part of a larger GRC.

BTW, the "half-crazed and swanky" grassroots leader was later kicked out after his wife complained that he was having an illicit affair with a Malaysian bar-girl

He is still very active as a volunteer doing ground work during elections for I have seen him.

Anyway his hand is still attached to him.
