Ex-NParks manager charged

A FORMER National Parks Board (NParks) manager was charged in court on Wednesday with corruption. Ma Woon Meng, 51, allegedly obtained bribes in the form of three loans of $500 each from Mr Ong Wee Chye, a director of Yi Fong Construction, between April and November 2006 to be lenient in supervising the works carried out by the company. The alleged offences occurred in Ang Mo Kio between April and November 2006. He is also accused of soliciting a loan of $15,000 and obtaining a loan of $1,000 from Mr Ong at a coffeeshop in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 in February this year. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years on each charge. A pre-trial conference has been fixed for Dec 17.
