Eng's Wantan Mee Re-Opens @ Dunman

Does it taste the same?

That is the people that ran the Waton Mee Stall @ the library, no wonder the face look so familar...sure bring back memories!

Now the old lady is a GRANDMA and her LATE HUSBAND...wow!..time flies, they weren't grandparents back then, and he wasn't late..ha ha ha I mean dead!

Do not know wether they taste the same..must go recee and try..btw anyone knows where the char kway teow stall opposite the old US Emabassy, Armenian street went?, now that the old building is demolished?

Where is this parklane stall?
In parklane shopping mall?

I think the Parklane stall is the name of the shop. Located at Sunshine Plaza and a branch in Fortune Centre. Nothing much, but I guess people just like the fried wanton.

Just wanna update those hard core addicts of Eng's power hot wantan mee that he's re-opening his stall at Basement of Dunman Food Centre on April 2nd...just got his sms few days ago. Hmmm, with his age..wonder how many more year's we'll get to enjoy this nice wantan mee. Enjoy whilst it last.

Buy the recipe from him and spread his excellent culinary approach for the ages to come. And when somebody wants to buy it from you in return when you are about to kick the bucket, don't drive such a hard bargain, and don't be a dog in a manger especially when you have no children or students to pass it down to. Okay, thank me later.

Chilli is hot only that is about it. In fact, I much prefer those sambal based chilli. For me Wanton Mee chilli must have that savoury slightly sweet taste.

Yes the chilli is far too hot for me. Joo Chiat seems to have lots of wan ton mee stalls that are quite popular, Send, Eng, Fei Fei and Hong Mou. But I still prefer my quiet neighbourhood stall at Haig Road Hawker Center. Lot's of pork lard, dried and soup wan ton plus nice mild chilli sauce, yummy!

Feature on TV

Parklane DeliHouse - They are famous for their wanton mee with their fried wanton.

It occupies a shop by itself, and good thing there's air-con if you sit inside. There are also seats outside the shop along the road, probably for the smokers. But i seriously don't think it's a good idea eating by the road side, especially where the traffic is quite heavy all time round.

Picture0025%282%29.jpg

Like the usual shop-house type eating house, each table got its own set of utensils and sauces.

Picture0022%282%29.jpg

Other than wanton mee, they also got other noodles as well. The one above is the pork chop noodles. The pork chop is quite thin, but that's a good thing, cos it's more easy to bite. But it's a bit salty to my liking.

Picture0036%286%29.jpg

As you can guessed, they also have "shui jiao" (seafood dumpling) noodles. The "shui jiao" bowl with soup quite big.

Picture0030%284%29.jpg

Their wanton mee. With 2 fried wanton and 2 other in the soup.

Picture0032%284%29.jpg

The sauce they use for their noodles is dark soya sauce.

Picture0031%284%29.jpg

Soft wanton in the soup, more tasty than the fried one.

Picture0033%282%29.jpg

This is the fried wanton. There isn't much meat inside, like eating "fried flour".

Picture0034%284%29.jpg

The char siew are ok only.

Picture0029%284%29.jpg

Alright, not that bad, they are quite crispy and nice to eat, but just that i prefer more meat inside.

Picture0037%288%29.jpg

Nevertheless, the mayonnaise which came along with the fried wanton is sooo...... liquid. Think they must have added water - a bit CMI.

Just to share...

"The Kopitiam" between City Hall and Doby Ghaut, has two noodle stalls directly side-by-side, the one of the right selling duck noodles, the one on the left selling wanton & bakchormee noodles.

The stall on the left selling wanton & bakchormee noodles, has one of the best (mee kia and mee pok) noodles I've ever tasted. Since I'm a (by personal choice) vegetarian, I order just the noodles with lettuce and extra spring onions, and with chilli paste base (no vinegar) only.

The fantastic noodles are the attraction - tender yet springy, it's different (and better!) from any mee kia and mee pok I've ever tasted from any other noodles stall. And the chilli paste taste is great too.

Give it a try if you're a noodles fan.

Yup this is the one. Personally still cannot figure out why it is so famous. Tried it and found it so so.

Fei Fei the noodles are good but the chilli is lousy. As for the Char Siew ... cannot remember (by default nothing special).

Pork lard? Now that is always a winner. :D

Hahaha seems that way for most stalls always the noodle portion very small. :D

For me Good wanton mee
1) the noodles must be good firm and wheaty
2) the sauce must be there (actually nothing much usually just oyster sauce and onion oil, garlic oil or pork lard)
3) the chilli must be good (strong sambal savoury with a hint of sweet taste)
4) the char siew must be a nice roasted red with a BBQ flavour
5) the soup must have good flavour
6) the wanton must have decent amount of meat and the skin must not be the tissue type.
7) Pork Lard bits are always a winner! :D

Which part of upper east coast rd?...I know the char kway teow old man & his wife & then to his son...grandchildren...does not look like the people from Armenian St.

The 'ngoh hiang' old man, whose food was mainly hand made is too old to do business, last ate there, was his niece, who told me, old man's children does't want to continue the business..

After the niece...the stall you see in picture is just taking the name...like the rest!!

16 Bedok South Road
Hill Street Char Kway Teow

Do not know wether they taste the same..must go recee and try..btw anyone knows where the char kway teow stall opposite the old US Emabassy, Armenian street went?, now that the old building is demolished?

Parklane Delihouse one too sweet; not nice.

Kok Kee one better, but always long queue. Try the 1.90 & Joo Chiat one in Whampoa market, not bad.

another stall to recommend:

雅丽 wanton mee at Blk 115 Bt Merah View (hawker centre), by an old couple

i like my wanton mee with ketchup, and this stall doesn't disappoint

the soup is very also tasty!
