Only 8 days left in the year of the ox! There is still plenty of time for us to continue to bring happiness and good cheer to those around us.
That’s just what we did over this weekend — GRLs, RC members, volunteers and donors got together to bring smiles to our residents. We held our annual Hong Bao Presentation, and also distributed red packets, vouchers, and groceries.
It was a joy to greet residents and to spend the time with caring volunteers. My thanks to all who took part.
Let us usher in the Year of the Tiger with plenty of joy, prosperity and good health!

With volunteers Velna, Cheryl, and Zafar from 好人好事 Hao Ren Hao Shi - HRHS. Cheryl’s father, who is also a volunteer with the organisation, encouraged Cheryl to volunteer and she in turn encouraged her friend and classmate Velna to volunteer as well. Keep it going!

“Celebrations don’t have to be big to be meaningful”
Many of my residents I spoke to recently also shared the same sentiment. We all want to celebrate and have fun with our loved ones during the festive period — but let’s also remember to do it safely and responsibly.
Do watch this video by Gov.sg. I’m sure you can relate to some of the scenes in one way or another!

Mr Heng meets Mr Tan.

It was good to meet Mr Tan Chye Thiam (second from right), who started Chye Thiam Maintenance in 1979 with his wife and just 3 other workers.

Their aim at the time was to give opportunities to farmers affected by changes to the agriculture sector. Today, the company is 1,800-strong and his son Edy (in navy) embraces digital transformation and sustainability, even as he continues to put worker welfare foremost.

The solution is developed by Vulcan AI, co-founded by Mr Manik Bhandari (first from right).

Chatted with two workers from Chye Thiam Maintenance. They were at an outdoor location to demo how the watch sends signals of their movements back to the command centre so that a supervisor can tend to any incident almost immediately.

This is the watch, powered by advanced AI capabilities, designed by Vulcan AI. Chye Thiam Maintenance workers use this as a digital personal protective equipment to track their vitals and movements.

Infocomm Media Development Authority - IMDA had put out an open innovation challenge based on a commonly-faced sector problem defined by Singapore Ministry of Manpower, Vulcan AI responded and CTM stepped up to trial the solution. Within seven months, they completed a successful pilot, and CTM now has the technology in use every day for some of their workers. The solution is also being tested in other sectors such as schools, hotels and F&B. The next step is to think creatively of applications in other sectors too.

What do thermal heating systems in Scandinavia and centralised air-conditioning systems in Singapore have to do with each other?
A Singaporean engineer working on thermal heating systems in Denmark one day asked himself, “What if we used this pump technology in place of the conventional valve-based system we use for central air-conditioning in tropical climates?” He experimented and found that he could develop a system that is 20% more energy efficient.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic hosted his R&D work at their Environmental and Water Technology Centre of Innovation, and found it so promising that they are going to install his distributed cooling system across their campus.
Our educational institutions support a vibrant R&D ecosystem in more ways than one. Their R&D platforms, like the EWTCOI, bring students, lecturers, researchers, real world problems, and R&D facilities together to solve real world problems under realistic conditions.
National Research Foundation Singapore has been happy to support our IHLs in their innovation and incubation work. I look forward to more of such efforts and their positive impact!

Three more days till we usher in the Year of the Tiger!
My fellow East Coast Advisers and I joined residents in a hybrid Lunar New Year celebration where we were treated to getai and lion dance performances. I’m sure they brought the festive mood to many households!
Also popped by The MarketPlace@58 and distributed mandarin oranges to residents and stallholders. We exchanged greetings with shoppers who were doing their last minute shopping. Wonderful to see everyone in good spirits and I hope you’ll enjoy your CNY preparations!
