A good turn deserves another.
Last week, a cute Bedok resident, Billie, pleasantly surprised our volunteers at one of the mask collection points by bringing them drinks while they were distributing free masks to our young residents aged 12 and below. Her mother had collected her mask prior to this, and had sent her back to the collection point with drinks to thank the volunteers!
5,000 reusable kids masks were generously donated by Ramatex. This collection exercise also provides the opportunity to educate our young the correct way to wear and take care of their masks. Our volunteers distributed these masks to residents at various locations in Bedok.
This spirit of giving and kindness is what we need more of during these difficult times. I am heartened by these kind gestures and the efforts of our volunteers for taking care of the well-being of our residents. A big thank you to our sponsor and volunteers!

Thanks to everyone playing their part during Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), our COVID-19 situation has stabilised. The Multi-Ministry Taskforce announced today that we will move back to Phase 3 (Heightened Alert) in two steps.
First, from Monday, we will ease some measures such as increasing the social gathering group size limit from 2 persons to 5 persons. If the situation remains under control, we will then allow other activities to resume from 21 June, including dining-in at F&B establishments. Work-from-home will continue to remain the default arrangement.
We will also continue to expand our vaccination programme. From tomorrow, vaccination will be offered to Singapore Citizens aged 12 to 39. I urge all who are eligible to get vaccinated.
We are not out of the woods yet, but I am confident that we will continue to make steady progress as long as we continue to work together.

Riko, Julian and Soo Wee are three of the seven volunteers who are part of the Bedok Brain Gym — a tuition programme for children from lower-income families.
This meaningful initiative was sparked by Riko, who was an intern with the East Coast Community Internship Programme earlier this year. When she first shared this idea with me, I encouraged her to go for it. She then roped in other volunteers to help with lesson planning, organising fun activities and games, so that students can not only improve academically but also pick up soft skills. They also picked the name Brain Gym as they wanted to create an atmosphere for students to have fun.
Thank you to our volunteers for being so giving — your spirit of looking out for one another is what makes our Bedok community a special one.
The team is always looking for youth volunteer tutors, so you can email [email protected], if you are keen to join. You can also check out Bedok Youth Network Facebook page to see what other activities have been planned for this June school holidays.

As we move gradually into Phase 3 (Heightened Alert), some sectors will still be affected by the precautionary measures. Hence, the government is extending the current enhancements to the Jobs Support Scheme (JSS) for affected sectors. We will also extend the COVID-19 Driver Relief Fund for our taxi and private hire car drivers.
I hope these measures can go some way to helping those affected. You can find out more in the infographics below.
Let us stay positive, look out for one another, and continue to be vigilant.

DPM Heng seems to be tasked with a lot of unimportant tasks lately. It must be a sign of impending retirement.

He is trying very hard to appear active and important, but clearly he has been sidelined.:eek::biggrin:

I was very happy to hear that Assistant Professor Shao Huilin and her team have developed ExoSCOPE — a world’s first blood test for real-time monitoring of cancer treatment success. This test has multiple applications, including diagnosing cancer early, and could potentially be applied to other types of diseases.
Huilin was drawn to science at a young age. At 18 years old, she received the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)’s scholarship which fulfilled her aspiration to become a scientist. She returned to Singapore after her studies and eventually started her own research group.
It is extremely fulfilling to see groundbreaking research come to fruition and how the hard work and dedication of our scientists are making a difference to peoples’ lives.
You can read more about the team’s research here: https://go.gov.sg/nusexoscope
