E-scooters to be banned from Singapore footpaths from Nov 5

The whole PMD saga is a result of incompetent Transport ministers. If they want to ban it, ban it from the start. These useless millionaire ministers of transport led those peasants on, the peasants invested. The peasants were further led on when PAP minister say must change due to battery, they changed and invested even more. Then now you say ban. Cannot ride on walkways and also roads. Lol :D You expect them to take this lying down like LKY days? Haha..

At least allow them on roads. Set a speed limit, mandatory helmet, registration and insurance. Why are your roads so "precious" to the extent of not allowing PMDs on them???

We have a bunch of born in Malaysia clowns running our MoT. Either that or it's such a cursed ministry no self respecting Singaporean wants to touch the job.

If PMDs are allowed on roads, the cars would have less space (imagine the motorbike hordes of Vietnam and Bangkok etc) congestion builds up, can't justify high taxes on cars, people switch to PMDs, leading to massive loss of revenue from car related taxes, COEs and petrol taxes.

But yes, PMDs should be allowed on the left lanes. To me, they are similar in class to motorcycles.

Exactly. Let them go in the roads. Impose speed limit, licensing, insurance like motor bike. If PAP is sincere in solving the problem, it has to slaughter the sacred COE and road tax for these PMDs, to promote such mobility devices which are carbon neutral. Fucking PAP clowns going about talking day and night about climate change like talk cock sing song, and when it comes to real issue, pretend to be working. Lol

This PMD saga shows how incompetent and reactive the government is. Yet they demand top salaries for being the best and brightest in the land, and are arrogant as fuck. They have consistently shown themselves to lack foresight and are unable to come up with effective and innovative policies. MRT breakdown fiasco, CECA, PMDs, etc are recent examples.

PAP ministers are nothing great. They are in their jobs merely because they are obedient and will tow the line. Abilities are an afterthought. Sinkies have been short-changed. So wake the fuck up, sinkies!

PMD should have been handled this way.......

All PMDs will require accident insurance whether operating on the footpaths or roads or whatever. If no insurance will be fined and jailed.

For a start. Before trying to ban. Might make some PMD riders happier. Also make insurance companies happier.

Also if kena hit by PMD can report and collect damages.

On the road, if PMD kena accident insurance can pay also.

And let the insurance people work out how much the insurance will cost!

They should have this for Bicycles and cyclists too.

To be effective, each PMD needs to be registered with LTA too. Have a license plate displayed front and rear. On top of having accident insurance. Else, it would be very difficult to ID and catch them when they choose to speed off after hitting a pedestrian. With a license plate, at least there is a good chance to catch the guy. With help from eye witnesses, CC-TV.

Yes definitely need licence plate. Same for bicycles.

Collect taxes for road and pathways. Should be comparable to what motorcyclists pay.

I mean what is the difference between PMDs and Motorcycles? Electric engine? I think Tesla owners in sinkieland will have to pay COE and road tax too right?
In fact there should be COE for PMDs too!

I am for collecting PMD road tax. Let them go on the roads and be the smallest fish there. Your Tesla example is a good one. Apples to apples.

PMD is like the Tesla of Motorcycles! LOL!
Motorcycle manufacturers are already coming out with electric models. Like you mentioned, PMDs should be treated the same way as electric bikes. Licensed riders, registered vehicle, have insurance coverage, wear helmet.

Well Elon musk already came out to slam our government's lack of support for electric vehicles so I'm not surprised at their narrow minded thinking. Putting oil interests and government coffers ahead of real change.

The PAP is running around like a headless chicken now. They have no clue how to react in the post-liberal world order and refuse to show, or is incapable of, real leadership.

PMD Riders On Grass Paths Face $5,000 Fines, 100 Users Warned Within First Day Of Ban
mustsharenews.com

With the implementation of new rules, an adjustment period is to be expected. At least 100 PMD users learned the hard way that stricter regulations on e-scooters were here to stay on Tuesday (5 Nov).

But a misconception arising from the ban on all e-scooters from footpaths across Singapore, needs to be quickly resolved.

Grass turfs, aren’t an alternate path for creative riders who wish to circumvent the footpath ban, clarified the National Parks Board (NParks) to TODAY.

Ironically, the fine for ruining path-side grass patches is even higher than riding on footpaths — up to $5,000 per rider, if one is found guilty.
100 warnings to errant PMD riders in a day

Within a day of implementation, more than 100 PMD riders have already been warned not to ride their e-scooters on footpaths, reports TODAY.

Hoverboards, and other PMDs besides e-scooters, will be banned in similar ways from footpaths progressively by Mar 2020.

No riding on grass patches either

Clips on social media surfaced of creative PMD users trying to avoid travelling on footpaths by crossing via grass patches instead.

NParks has clarified with the media that errant e-scooter riders who are found guilty of doing so, can be fined up to $5,000 for contravening the Parks and Trees Act.
The fear is that abrasions from the e-scooters’ wheels may cause irreparable damage to the grass turfs by leading to “soil erosion”, and eventual “safety concerns” for pedestrians & riders alike.

Park connectors or cycling paths only, or face $2,000 fine

Penalties for riding PMDs on footpaths currently include a $2,000 fine, and/or up to 3 months’ jail.

To recap, based on a recent ruling, HDB void decks aren’t allowed either. Riders who contravene this rule and ride along void decks face up to a $5,000 fine.
In summary:
  • Grass Turfs– E-scooter riding is banned.
    • Penalty: Up to $5,000 fine
    • Grace Period Ends: 1 Jan 2020
  • HDB Void Decks– E-scooter riding is banned.
    • Penalty: Up to $5,000 fine
    • Grace Period Ends: 1 Nov 2019
  • Footpaths– All e-scooters are banned.
    • Penalty: Up to $2,000 fine and/or 3 months’ jail
    • Grace Period Ends: 1 Jan 2020
Safe spaces remaining to ride PMDs would be designated paths for cycling, and all park connectors linking nature parks.

No more warnings by 1 Jan 2020

If you’re issued with a similar warning while riding, you’ll thankfully not have to pay a fine yet. However, this “advisory period” lasts only till the end of 2019.

Users should take note that from 1 Jan 2020, the advisory period will expire and the penalties will come into full effect.

This means that riders have about 8 weeks till the end of the year, to decide what to do with their e-scooters.

Many PMD users have already told TODAY about their intentions to sell their devices, while some have petitioned for a U-turn on the ban, in light of the stricter regulations.

Safer pathways for all

Hopefully, the new regulations and fines will mean that there are stricter ways to regulate errant PMD riders, and prevent unfortunate accidents from occurring in our heartlands.

NParks and the Land Transport Authority will continue monitoring and enforcing the new rules accordingly. As for PMD users, it’s probably time to rethink your commute to work or school.

Are you affected by the PMD ban as a user? Let us know what you plan to do about your e-scooter in the comments below.

Everyone should get an e-wheelchair.

The PAP govt is scared shitless when it comes to two things: religion and accessibility for disabled people. Temples/mosques/churches are often spared from land-grabbing enbloc or infrastructure ambitions, even if they're in a good location.

I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about and why e scooters in particular are being singled out.

My advice to all those who embrace micro mobility is to just get an e-bike instead and you have full use of the road network.

I do pity those civil servants working for the incompetent transport ministers. One day, say PMD is active mobility and endorse it, next day so battery must change and chut new pattern, then now finally say ban PMD on footpaths, roads and grass. These civil servants must be swearing chow cheers byes at the incompetent ministers everyday
