I notice no forumner mentioned this in SBF. here is a real talent forced to leave Singapore to emigrate to Canada by the PAP. He was a certified Dr., a writer, poet, help start the Singapore Symphony orchestra, the singapore dance company and the singapore chinese orchestra. As well, he wrote novels, and poetry. The PAP think they have talented people, well, non will come even close to him.

A handsome and very cultured man who had a fine palate. Its well known that he found the country restrained and left. He was a member of the original group of intellegentsia that were classified as activist.

He left then come back off on.

Didn't know he started the Rainbow Lounge, even b4 there was Dennis Foo & Zouk etc.

During the early 80s, as teenager I chanced upon his award winning local fiction book 'If We Dream Too Long' (Pub 1976)

I believe it's still avail in NLB.

Then, I was struck by some soft-porn contents inside.

Story of a boy in the late 60s who newly served NS. Nostalgic feel to the whole setting involving the 'Worlds' (New World, gay World, Great World ), take bus direct to changi beach, seeing show in Capitol Theatre circle seats (new gen people ask, what's circle seats ?).

Boy, I think Ah Seng. Unemployed, looking for job in newly independent Spore while well-to-do classmates go overseas study.

One part, he sian & on one bargirl. Brought her to Changi Beach Swim.

Then make love. Described the gal as very tanned but when naked, the private area so white he felt like 'painting' over the area to be of same tan.

Then the immortal words author put in quotation marks ' Hee Hee, Got hair down there....'

Talk about adolescent memories....

Goh Poh Seng - RIP.

He inspired the next generation of writers like Gopal Baratham, Robert Yeo, Rex Shelly

I'm glad someone on sbf did notice Dr Goh's passing. He was indeed a visionary who saw the need for a vibrant arts scene long before the PAPzis were willing to acknowledge it.

He also wrote plays, poetry and fiction, and shared his passion for writing with young people. I know because I was one of them.

We were sad to see him leave but understood. That was in the early 80s.

I met him in 2007 when he returned. I was so surprised that despite the years and his Parkinson's, he smiled broadly and said my name.

RIP Dr Goh.

Thanks for sharing. I truly wonder who is left of that calibre in this country.

Really, i thought he came back only once in 2007. He was just too fed up with the singapore govt. However, according to the news article, he had such a warm reception in 2007, he did mention that he should have come back earlier.

Very few. He was a giant in the arts scene. He should have been made Minister for Arts or Cultural Affairs or something like that. But trust the PAP to not only not recognise talent but promote the wrong talent. I don't think Lui Tuck Yew has ever read a poem.
