Don't eat shark's fins...

Just google "commercial shark fishing" and it will direct you to the many websites about gill netting and long line fishing methods. So please do no not make such statements off the top of your head.

In case you are ignorant, living in tiny Singapore, the oceans cover 2/3 of the earth. Whilst on land most animals are 2 dimensional except for those that can fly, marine animals has the freedom to move through a 3-dimensional space. Hence a hectare of land cannot equate to a hectare of a body of water, comprende?

The increase in the number of sharks being killed began not so long ago, and as sharks are on top of the food chain, undisturbed through eons of time, there being known 440 species, yes, there were huge numbers before. It has been estimated that 90% of the total population has been decimated in recent times.

You're talking sense. Refer back to one of my earlier postings. Sharks can't be netted in schools like smaller fish. It's fished one by one. How many shark trawlers and shark fishers are there in the world for 70 to 100 million sharks to be fished and definned per year? If that's possible, how many sharks are there in the oceans? Must be billions, otherwise extinct long ago.

hahaha....didn't expect this topic to be still alive and swimming.......
The UN Cites lists 3 shark species whose consumption is subject to regulation....the great white, basking and whale shark.
There are over 400species of shark.
Whether the yearly harvest is 10mil or 100mil certainly will not be known for sure.
But you can gauge the human pop that may be consuming sharks fins(China, Taiwan, HK, Thailand, Singapore and Chinese in major Western cities...etc).
In the past, sharks were traditionally reserved for the wealthy on special occasions. Now it is within the reach of most pple.

For the fishermen, Sharks fins can sell for US$700 per kg, about 70 times the value of a kilo of tuna. The bodies of sharks are bulky and low value and have little demand.

I would say tens of mil harvests per year is realistic figure.

On a side note shark head is quite a delicay though not commonly available.

Perhaps World Wildlife Fund should declare Kububird an endangered specie?

I heard it costs about S$20 per bowl, that's between 5 to 10 times the price of most other soups. If it's within the reach of most people, the world must be in the golden age. In any case, I'm not convinced. I can see turtle soup stalls in hawker centres and coffeeshops, but certainly not sharkfin soup stalls. What about turtles? Going to be extinct too?

Where's the recruitment office? I'm thinking of applying for a job there. The salary must be good. :D

Then billions of sharks in the oceans is a realistic figure. :)

Western health supplement has shark liver oil too. Expensive stuff at about 10 times the price of cod liver oil. :o

I think your Gugu angry and ran away because you don't treat her to a bowl of sharkfin soup. :D

Sharkfin soup is good and expensive alright but in soup, it's shredded. If you're feeling wealthy, at good restaurants, the real stuff is whole cut of fin lightly braised, best served with scallop or abalone. For a lighter taste of sharkfin, some good dimsum restaurants serve dimsum varities with sharkfin wrapped inside too. Just for a few dollars more since only a few shreds of sharkfin would be wrapped along with bite-sized dimsum pieces, but enough to enhance the taste and the feel of the bite and chew a lot.

environmentalists and the green are powderful people....they can influence and and also wreck havoc.....

environmentalists and the green are powderful people, they are 99% angmohs.

Ask them to stop eating foie gras first, dun messing with our dinner table.

Ask them to stop all foie gras then come and stop all shark fins. Killing the goose like what they do is really inhumane to a warm blooded creature.

Most importantly, sharks are prehistoric they deserved to be extinct, we are helping nature to make them extinct.

I finally got to eat shark fin last night at a Chinese business friend's home. His father was celebrating 70th birthday. Duck noodle soup with XO, shark fin with XO, chicken baked with XO, even crab and prawn are also cooked with XO. Now I know the famous dish that Chinese call drunken prawn. Anyway, the shark fin soup was great. From western soups, only lobster bisque can compare. Now I know why so many Chinese wants to eat it. My friend said it took a whole day from morning to evening to prepare.

A bit tipsy at the end of the night. Practically all dishes have some dashes of XO and we kept toasting bottoms-up with XO. I think they opened four bottles of Hennessy XO that night, for drinking, not counting for cooking.

Exactly. Eat them until they're extinct. What's the problem? They eating us is the problem. In fact, better get your taste and bite before they're extinct as the greenpeace environmentalists are scaring us with.
