<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->MY FAMILY regularly patronises Din Tai Fung restaurant. I had quite an unusual dining experience at the branch in Junction 8 last Saturday.
Normally, my husband takes the queue number and indicates four plus two persons, meaning four adults and two children. My children are aged four and six.
This time, I took the queue number and I indicated six persons. Even so, we ended up being squeezed into a table for four.
We had a lovely dinner but when I went to pay the bill, I found I was charged $1 per child for the warm water served to them. We adults paid $1 for tea per person.
I do not understand why I had to pay for the warm water only this time. The only reason I could think of was that I had indicated six persons instead of four plus two persons.
I am not one who refuses to pay for water. Most restaurants do not charge more than 30 cents for warm water. I wonder what is so special about the water served at this restaurant that I need to pay as much as I would for tea. Moreover, I was told I would not have been charged if my children had been seated on baby chairs. What a strange management practice.

If you got money to pay for bland food at Ding Tai Dong. $1+$1 is nothing to spendthrifts like you.

That water really special, specially prepared and filtered through kidneys, with compliments from the chefs.

Don't charge $1 how to pay the rent?
Don't employ FWs at depressed wages
how to pay the rent?

This customer is downright stupid, just
stop patronizing this outlet, vote with
one's $$$$.

Aiyah, everything also want free. The shop owners need to pay to high rental , franchise fee and if cant afford to order tea or drinks next time down pratonised such places. Even they have to pay to PUB for the water, the staff to serve you and buy the cups too. next time buy khong guan pow from Kopitiam and bring your own water or maybe drink from the tap

Most restaurant do charge for plain water.
Some actually sell a small 500ml bottle mineral water at more then $2.
This is how they earn money.

she doesn't know what is record profit? even they are making a lot they will want to suck more.

Don't ask me who they learn it from, it is obvious.

In most restaurants, from fine dining to fast food, drinks fetch the highest profit margins. Don't we notice, all waiters and cashiers are trained liked parrots to ask what'd we like to drink? If plain water is free and most customers drink plain water, it blows a big hole in the profit centre of the business model.

It's a very cumbersome situation to manage. I think serving branded bottled water, with price listed on menu, is the best way out for branded restaurants. I've observed waiter facing harsh situations, e.g.:

1. Customer ordered plain water, was served plain water, and when billed at the end of the meal, complained out loud about 50c or or the plain water, claiming it's not the few cents or dollars, it's the principle - wasn't told in advance of the charge.

2. Customer ordered plain water, waiter informed him that there'd be a 50c or so charge for plain water before serving, but customer complained, I ask for the water, not the price, you think I can't afford is it?

Not forgetting Bukit Batok hokkien mee charges 50cents for the chilli:mad:

what you have just painted is just singapore service line . i believed you have been to japan or even stay there maybe for couple of months . you know that all restaurants in japan give out free water and sometimes even free green tea . you dont even need to buy tissue paper if you stay in japan ( if you know what i mean ) . ;) .every japanese company are trying their very best to make their product "worth every single cent "and to lure customer using powerful marketing strategy.

singapore company have been following the PAP ways to drains every single singaporean . by the way , if you have to pay for water ..be it . why bitch over 50cents or one dollar and spoil her day ?

Rightly put, why bitch over the small amt of money if you can afford to patronise Din Tai Fung. If this customer stands by his principle (whatever it is) then DO NOT patronise Din Tai Fung anymore....simple as ABC. Best , if you can, eat at home...healthier,cheaper and no fuss over free water.

In the USA, it is expected that you pay a customary tips of 10%-15% of the bill to the waiter whether you like the waiter or the food. So in every country there are these unwritten rules at eating houses.

Good example. Exactly my point. :D

In Korea, every foodcourt have a water dispenser where you can get your own free skyjuice. The reason that my family drinks water because it is more healthy than soft drinks. And MINERAL water is no good for the body.
I think we as consumer will have the final say, just stop going to places that charges for water. I already boycotted a few places. If a list is out in the web then we all cooperate and then see what happen. CONSUMERS SHOULD RULE THE MARKET NOT THE RETAILERS!!

"consumer is king " do not happen in singapore .business in singapore is the same as PAP ,who has been controling every singaporean . end of the day most singaporean still vote for PAP . and end of the day cosumers also lan lan go back to the same shop .

by the way , people who goes to restoran is to enjoy their food . who will make a fuss about paying for tap water ? those people who make a fuss because they have to pay for tap water do not deserve to dine in restoran. dont forget , even you go coffeeshop and ask for ice -kosor also must pay

not forgetting , how much can you save with a dollar or 50cents ? if you can get upset for paying $1 or 50cents then something is wrong with your life

Rich ppl v funny one. U earn big profits from them for the food, they dun mind, but they will kao peh over small things like $1 for water.

This is the nature of many Singaporean.
We have been squeeze by the big bro (Government) so many years.
Yet no one can do much but quietly accept our fate.
But when we have some little thing to complain eg $1 plain water
We quickly complain and publish it.
