Why the Workers’ Party Will Win Big at the Next General Election

The Workers’ Party of Singapore suffered a major defeat at the last General Elections held in 2015. My sense is that this loss stemmed from the fact that Singaporeans did not cast votes in protest, but voted who they truly believed would be the better Government.

While we can agree that the G did much after 2011 to address Singaporeans’ angst, WP’s push to position themselves as an alternative government to the PAP inadvertently created the fear of a freak election result. No one could then see Low Thia Khiang or Sylvia Lim as the Prime Minister of Singapore and as a result, Singaporean’s voted wisely and as if each vote counted.

It is now 2017 and, if you watch the ground, it would appear that the next General Elections is around the corner. The WP (and other opposition parties like the SDP) have started campaigning. The WP has started to walk the ground to show their presence (one of their weakness in the last GE) and not a day goes by that the opposition does not highlight the flaws of the PAP’s various policies. Couple this with the challenges of a global recession and the tough fiscal constraints of a newly elected government, the PAP-led G’s need to raise prices on amenities like carpark charges, S&CC, water tariffs, electricity and a whole host of other things, puts the WP in an ideal position to leverage on these new angsts to win big at the next GE.

As any student of Sun Tze will tell you, victory can seldom be taken. Victory comes from the mistakes of the opponent. Judging from the self-defeating conditions that the PAP-led G is creating, I would not be surprised if Singaporeans returned to the way they voted in 2011. And, given how well the PAP did in 2015, the fear of a freak election result will all but evaporate.

Hence, it is my belief that the WP will win big at the next GE.

WP retained all 6 seats in 2015 which they won in 2011. Their share of votes however fell by around 4.5%. They also lost the seat they won in a by elections in the intervening years. The writer comment about "major defeat" in his very sentence suggest he has no idea what he is talking about.

His analysis in para 3 is also flawed. WP has been walking the ground for years so it is nothing new. Its not going to translate into additional votes. WP is going into the next election much weaker and not because the PAP or the Govt has done better. The managing agent debacle and Chen turning renegade and fronting a faction will take its toll in the next GE. Sylvia is unlikely to run and she has been the major untainted drawcard for the party. With Chen's poor parliamentary performance it now up to LTK and the 3 well performing young turks to make the differnce. I am not sure that it can be done.

Shanmugan and the PAP will continue to undermine the WP with vexatious allegations until to the very day of polling. The press being the prostitutes that they are will not highlight what WP does in parliament.

On the opposition side we also have Leonard who continues to undermine the opposition as he has done for years.

It actually looks bleak unless WP's young turks manage to pull more credible candidates while fighting off the Chen faction. The faction made up of much of the party's veterans were a serious asset in LTK's early years so it is a matter not be taken lightly. Note how they used Chen and the Indian Poly lecturer as a front without showing their hand.

The PAP can win but what will be the Singapore that they win? It will not be the sparkling Singapore of the LKY years but a Singapore slowly declining into irrelevance. At the current rate of decline, I think many of us here will see the day when the average Singaporean is poorer than the average "ah tiong" living in Shanghai / Beijing.

Voters will vote like it's a GE even if it is only a by-election.

Every voter knows that even before the results are out, PAP will almost certainly form the next government. Hence, the PAP candidates, even while campaigning, can make concrete proposals for asset enhancement backed up with government funding that will materialize once the GE is over.

On the other hand, everyone knows that the oppies can only talk cock. Their big proposals will ALL amount to nothing because the government will not allocate any national funds to their ideas.

In the event that the PAP adopts the oppie ideas, the credit will still go entirely to the PAP because without their approval, any idea, no matter how good, will be stillborn.

Us grassroots leaders are also using national funds to reach out to local residents on behalf of our PAP advisors on a weekly, if not, daily basis. Oppies are only known to show up during election season and stay hidden once GE is over.

This is not true... WP has been working very hard on the ground after GE 2015 and WP helped a lot of people in needs.

If the oppositions contest less than half of total seats, the voting atmosphere will be very different. Hence WP will stand a chance if say only 35 seats out of 89 are contented.
