<p>The family of the late David Hartanto Widjaya, plans to submit new evidence to the Singaporean High Court, which they say may prove their son was murdered.
</p><p>"We will submit new evidence to the High Court. If this fails, there is still a chance we can appeal to the Supreme Court," Christovita Wiloto, who leads an advocacy team for the family, told a press conference Friday as reported by Antara news agency.
</p><p>"By submitting new evidence we expect there will be another Coroner's Court session overruling the previous verdict."
</p><p>The Coroner's Court ruled Wednesday that David, 21, who was studying at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) committed suicide on March 2 by jumping from a campus building, after allegedly stabbing his professor with a kitchen knife.
</p><p>Christovita went further by saying the team was studying the possibility of taking the case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
</p><p>"Taking the case to the international court, however, requires support from all parties especially from the government," he said.
</p><p>David's family and lawyers believe they are facing a massive wall of conspiracy in court proceedings in Singapore.
</p><p>"We need stronger efforts and political pressure from the Indonesian government so that we can uphold justice," said Christovita.
</p><p>"Our fight does not end with the verdict, it has just started."
</p><p>The case can not be heard at the criminal court after the Coroner's Court ruled that David had committed suicide.
</p><p>Singaporean prosecutors have also rejected submission or the objection and legal response filed by David's family.
</p><p>However, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said it was impossible for the Indonesian government to pressure the Singaporean government about the country's coroner's inquest into David's death.
</p><p>"This is a legal matter. There is a limit to the government's role," he told reporters.
</p><p>"We cannot interfere with their judiciary as we would never want foreign parties to meddle in our own legal affairs."
</p><p>The government, however, did offer to help the family file a request to the Singaporean High Court to review Wednesday's verdict that ruled that David committed suicide, and was not murdered as his family believe.
</p><p>"But this will not re-open the case," said Hassan.
</p><p>Commenting on the family's plan to bring the case to the international court, Hassan said there was no way the family could take the case to the ICJ or the International Criminal Court (ICC) because the international courts deal with high profile cases such as territorial disputes and genocide.

Those who haven't been through Singapore's kangaroo courts don't know what's it's like.
Anything the Judge doesn't want to hear, he rules irrelevant.
It's not the prosecution asking it to be ruled irrelevant; he doesn't have to put in the effort because the Judge and him are fellow salaried men, and they dance a deadly salsa together.
It is a pity that David's family must have been duped into not taking the cadaver back home for an independent autopsy. Without that, everything they produce would be ruled irrelevant.
David Carradine's family was wise enough to have their own autopsy not trusting one done in a third world cuntry.
The suicide note is easy enough to plant. Rip the hard disk out and it can be a portable disk in your own PC. You can even use it to store all your website history etc in it.
But I doubt ICJ can do anything. Both cuntries aren't even signatories.

As a Singaporean, I strongly encourage the family of David Hartanto Widjaja to bring the case into his death before an international court so that the Indonesian people will know the truth.
There is no justice in Singapore compared to Indonesia, which has (I believe) for the last 30 years had one of the least corrupt court systems in Southeast Asia.
I honestly encourage the family to go international so Singapore's reputation of dishonesty, immaturity and ill-knowledge will be exposed. This way the issue will become as big as possible, the world will pay attention and our country will improve.
I suggest also that both the local and Singapore newspapers publish the story as a headline piece when the verdict is announced. Singaporeans need to realize there is a high chance the court system was wrong and the nation will owe David's family and Indonesia an apology. Let everyone laugh at our country, our poor legal system and our senseless people. Hopefully we will wake up to the ideas of our neighbors. There is so much education in Singapore yet so much immaturity.

I've written in this forum before about David's case and also encourage the family bring it's case to the international court to seek closure on the matter. No justice system in the World is perfect and are subject to the occasional error in judgment. That is not to say that Singapore's justice system is flawed or perfect I might add. However, without proper basis or proof, we cannot make negative and unjustified comments in any forum. Anyone who does so lacks maturity and level mindedness. This message is written without prejudice to David's family nor the Singapore courts.

David team plans to sue Singapore Police

Representatives for the family of Indonesian student David Hartanto Widjaja, who was found dead at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University in March this year, plans to sue the Singapore Police for refusing to return David’s laptop and police records to his family for examination.
“The only choice now is to sue the Singapore Police. We want them to return David’s laptop to his family,” Iwan Piliangan, the team chairman, said Wednesday to kompas.com.
Iwan said the Singapore Police agreed to return the laptop, but without the examination record or a receipt.
Such an action would make it difficult to trace police statements in previous trials, he said. For example, he said, the police claimed to have found a letter on Jan. 24 that said David wanted to commit suicide, but his family claims David was with the family at the time.
The police also claim David visited websites about suicide, but they failed to mention any dates, he added.

According to a report from the Jakarta Post, representatives for the family of the late David Hartanto Widjaja, who was found dead at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University in March this year, are planning to sue the Singapore Police for refusing to return David’s laptop and police records to his family for examination. The Singapore police took David’s laptop for forensic examination after his death. A police officer told the coroner’s court held in June this year to determine the cause of David’s death that he found a “suicide letter” dated January 24 in his laplop expressing his desire to end his life. However, David’s family disputed the testimony, claiming that David was with the family on that fateful day.
David Widjaja shocked the entire nation by jumping to his death after allegedly stabbing his professor Chan Kup Luk in his back. The police had initially closed the case as “suicide”. The coroner’s court was called at the family’s insistence. They had suspected foul play as David had showed no signs of depression or suicidal tendencies in the weeks leading to the tragedy.
Judge Victor Yeoh, who heard David’s case said the results of an investigation and evidence presented before the court proved David had committed suicide. “I rejected all the evidence from the victim’s family,” he said without giving an explanation.
Despite the verdict, many questions remain unanswered. If David had intended to commit suicide, there is no need to stab his professor before doing so. He could have discovered and used easier methods to end his life. David was playing online games till 3 am the night before which did not quite corroborate with the emotional state of a person attempting suicide.
Witnesses at the scene also heard David crying for help when he dashed out of the professor’s room. His close friends testified that David was not depressed and neither was he affected by the loss of his scholarship.

David’s father still does not believe that his son had committed suicide and had vowed to “go to the ends of the earth to find justice”. However with the case now closed, it is not known if there are any legal channels left for David’s family to pursue the matter.
The unfortunate death of Widjaja had won his family widespread sympathies from the Indonesian public. The team which was set up to help his family investigate the cause of David’s death comprises mostly of volunteers like blogger Iwan Piliangan.

THE state coroner announced a verdict of suicide in the David Hartanto Widjaja’s case on July 29th, ending an inquiry that stretched for 10 days.
He said that Widjaja, an Indonesian scholar and fourth-year student from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, fell to his death on March 2nd after stabbing Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk in his office.
Widjaja’s family, however, did not accept the verdict.
State coroner Victor Yeo took about one and a half hours to deliver his 73-page verdict, with evidence gleaned from 27 testimonies, including eye-witness accounts, autopsy, forensic reports, scene reconstruction and data extracted from David’s personal computer.
He concluded that Widjaja had voluntarily stabbed A/P Chan in the back with a knife at about 10.25am that day. A struggle is believed to have followed, during which Widjaja sustained the cuts on his arms.
The coroner said that after exiting the professor’s office, Widjaja walked along the corridor and down a stairwell before climbing over the parapet and onto the roof of the glass bridge. He then sat on the glass ledge before the fatal fall.
The coroner said there was no third party or foul play involved, and explained the autopsy findings were consistent with the witness accounts that he fell on his own.
He stressed that there was no reason to question the integrity of the forensic pathologists and the way the autopsy was concluded.
In addition, he concluded that A/P Chan was a credible witness as he did not deliberately conceal anything. He stated that the relationship between professor and student was purely professional and Chan did not single Widjaja out.
Widjaja was lucid on the glass roof, when he talked briefly to another student. He was shown upright in the video footage on another eye-witness’s handphone camera.
During the inquiry, the Widjaja family expressed unhappiness with NTU for coming to a premature conclusion that David had committed suicide and stabbed his professor before the police had completed their investigations. They also did not accept the verdict that their son had committed suicide and maintained that he had been murdered.
David’s brother, William Widjaja, believes that the court had based its verdict on flawed and false testimonies, but was unable to provide any evidence to substantiate his claims.
The family plans to take further action in Indonesia.

SINGAPORE officials have been given access to Mas Selamat Kastari, the Jemaah Islamiah terrorist group's regional leader now detained in Malaysia, Parliament was told on Monday.
'Malaysia authorities have given our security officers access to Mas Selamat. He was, however, uncooperative during the interview, and refused to talk. So at this point, the Internal Security Department's assessment is that he remains defiant,' Senior Minister of State (Law and Home Affairs) Ho Peng Kee disclosed.
But security agencies of both countries remain in close communication with each other, he told Mr Christopher de Souza, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, who asked if the authorities here had access to the terrorist.
Associate Professor Ho added, however, that given Mas Selamat's past record, 'we must be realistic about what we can extract from a hardcore terrorist like him, in particular on the details of his escape'.
He also said that while recent counter-terrorism successes have improved the security situation in the region, 'the elimination of several terrorist leaders does not remove the terrorist threat.'
'The recent security operations also uncovered terrorist plots, and surfaced weapons and explosives. These confirm that terrorist elements remain intent on and are capable of carrying out terrorist attacks. One concern is that terrorist elements might even be driven to launch more attacks out of desperation or revenge,' he warned.
