CSJ On JBJ

Things have yet to change. Nothing in that video is going to help in getting votes. The constant association with Gandi, freedom fighters, quotes from nobel laurettes etc. are meaningless when it comes to GE.

JBJ and Chiam both fought their campaigns on housing issues. Many might not recall, JBJ fought on the PSA workers housing issues in Blair Plain, Low Hill Road and Chiam demanded explanation on HDB construction costs, land acquistion costs.

This is pretty much gratuitious.

In other words, the legitimacy of Chiam is based on a tiny hamlet. His and Low's legacies are based on municipal issues like whether the corridors are clean and the rubbish collected.

Chiam is nothing without Potong Pasir. And SDA is nothing without Chiam. Potong Pasir will be absorbed as the hamlet has gotten too small. Chiam will have difficulty finding an 'A' team to run in a GRC due to his age/poor health. So he may not even run at all.

Through a stroke of the pen, the PAP has redefined upgrading. So Potong Pasir and Hougang are at the front of the queue. This parochial/provincial issue will not feature in the next election. Previously, the residents were angry that their beloved PAP has not and even threatened not to upgrade their estates. They did not happily vote for their opposition superstars. Low Teck Hua is in Hong Kong, not Hougang. Quek Hock Seng is in Hong Kong, not Potong Pasir.

Singaporeans should not be deprived of the chance to debate on more important national issues. As we mature politically, we should be looking for more. I think Singaporeans have matured, albeit slowly. Many are starting to see beyond the distractions like allegations of stage-managing the election department.

If there was an opposition good at winning the hearts of the people, it couldn't have last long for it would have become the ruling party already. I scratched my head in search of such an opposition but I couldn't find any. Certainly not in the last 50 years. Instead, I found the PAP. Based on all the talking cock, we should be giving them an even cleaner slate.

It is still early days.

I would not worry about Chiam, Low etc. They seem know how to get votes over the years.

The trick is to get voted in. Then you have platform to debate on national issues. Its pointless selling Kway Pai Tee in Little India. You must deliver what the people want and need.

In all my life I have never heard JBJ quote a nobel laurette, talk about Gandhi etc. Its meaningless. Nobody is interested.

Just address the voters.

Actually JBJ spoke like that and with more than a tinge of British Accent. He however knew what to speak about.

In order to win an election in SG, you need to win over the Bengs and the Lians.

A nerdy specky guy that speaks grammatically correct English simply doesn't cut it.

JBJ won his seat in Anson because the electorate was full of Ah Neh portworkers and discontented Blair Plain residents. The PAP made the WP victory even easier by fielding a political lightweight and virtual unknown.

The vast majority were Chinese albeit with a higher % of Indians. The candidate was no lightweight but the nephew of Lim Kim San. These chaps were displaced and JBJ rubbed the housing issue in.

Not only that, they thought that, Hougang formerly PUNGGOL farm people, the bastions of the PAP, will vote for them. Little does they know, that BRANDED goods, may not appeal to some of the people.

First they fielded a virtually unknown person called "Tang Guang Seng", who won the first election there, without even doing any work, and took for granted that, this was a divine 'mandate from heaven'. Never did any groundwork..never did anything al all.....the people of Hougang, woked up from their 'slumbers'..and booted that incompetent fool OUT!. Then they tried with another, a slighly better incumbent, Heng Chee How...but they make a boo boo...by THREATHENING the voters...which they never forgot!..next they put in a Teochew to match LOW, but placing another LOW to fight another Low...thinking the people will get confused with the LOW's..how low can they get..

Anyway...to Low Saik Meng credit...he did gain some ground, did his groundwork well...and he played the wrong joker card in the last election...WOODEN, who staked his reputation; and they lost, even loosing more votes that before...for people. never forgot what WOODEN said...years back..

There are no longer dark-skinned port workers in blair plains today....it wasn't only the Indians, but JBJ appealed to the 'downtrodden', ' marginalized' , 'shoved-aside' Singaporeans...he spoke the language in which they understood...at times though, it was way over the top...

How could we forget his...."baby god' ( BG), big god, small god..his yes sir, yes sir three bag full...

it was not a political lightweight as you had mentioned..Tang Guan Seng was a virtual unknown, even till now...he won the election against the WP...it was the arrogance...that fell them!

Actually Tang Guan Seng served 2 terms before he was kicked out, so not exactly an unknown. Tang was basically the faction leader for Chinese Ed in the PAP and was supposedly the expert on the needs of the Chinese ed. He was also cocky.

Believe me that the PAP leadership got a mighty shock when Tang lost and thereafter the grip of the chinese ed was lost within the party. Goh Chok Tong and old man was mad. The GRC meant to look after the minority was used in 97 to give Tang a safe seat in AMK GRC and then he was stood down.

Teochew of Houngang/Ponggol/Mandai are a special lot. Many are also Catholics who came as a group from warlordism torn China and began farming as the main vocation. They are still very cohesive in that area.

At the end of the day, it wasn't a race thing, a language thing, a religion affliation thing, educational background thing...or even heritage thing...

it was what the people needs that had to be addresed...or what Deng Xiao Peng once says " It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white, as long, as it catches mice"..

OK!, you mean they are Catholics, Teochews, hail from a certain Gentry class in China...determine their decision to vote against the PAP?

:p

Agree with you. If you got the time, do a bit of research on how they came here. Very interesting. The catholic ones were brought by french missionaries and their former church was on a hill in Mandai. Its now in Woodlands - St Anthony's. Montfort boys are mainly Teochews. No they were not from gentry class. Peasant stock.

The government has realised that religion plays a part. For the very first time, Kong Hee was put together with the religious leaders in front for the NDP speech.

No comments on Kong Hee Fatt Choy...if he sups with the devil...that's his perogative..we can't really judge that..only the divine will judge him..

anyway...I will research the ones you mentioned...

but he now rears a horde of trolling laukuaybus. it used to be sister siok chin in the lead but somehow rather the abc troll seems to have taken over. sexmobile next?:D

the laukuaybus are lau huays who are many times more pestering than ah lians. baey yam keng, the korean lookalike hunk is one fine example being hounded by the lkb lau huay during one of his unfortunate walk about in abc. and suprisingly, her official husband happens to be called ah beng! LOL!!:D
