Mr Lawrence Wong had promised Singaporeans when he was sworn in as Prime Minister: “I will never settle for the status quo.”
Like many of his other promises, this has turned out to be another empty one typical of the PAP.
While Mr Wong promised change, he has returned to his party’s old playbook of hobbling the opposition’s efforts by making the period between the announcement of the new boundaries (which was announced on 17 March 2025) and the dissolution of parliament (15 April 2025) impossibly short. In the previous GE, the period between the release of the EBRC report and the dissolution of parliament was more than three months. In the present GE under Mr Wong, it is a mere 28 days, the shortest in recent memory.
This unseemly haste can only mean one thing: The PAP is fearful of the people’s anger with the high cost of living and its irrational immigration policy. Singaporeans need the time to thoroughly examine these issues before casting their votes.
But Mr Wong has denied Singaporeans this crucial opportunity, hoping that by cutting short the period for the opposition to reach out to voters and present rational alternatives, his party can maximise its advantage and preserve its position of power.
Elections are solemn exercises where the people are given ample time to become thoroughly familiar with the parties, their platforms and candidates so that they can make informed decisions at the polls.
In this instance, Mr Wong’s desperation reflects his party's inability to come up with new ideas to deal with Singaporeans’ concerns.
It is, therefore, essential for the electorate to send an unambiguous message to the PAP in this GE that it needs to do better and not resort to its old ways of crippling the opposition’s effort.
Its smash-and-grab tactic to secure another term – another term which would merely put more than $10 million in Mr Wong’s bank account for piecemeal measures for global problems – cannot be tolerated any longer.
