Dr Chee has questions for Mr Shanmugam.

As reported by multiple web portals, Minister for Law and Home Affairs, Mr K Shanmugam, has sold his Good Class Bungalow at Astrid Hill for $88 million. According to these articles, the sale took place in September 2023 and the assets placed in a trust managed by UBS Trustees (Singapore) Pte Ltd, with the beneficiary listed as Jasmine Villa Settlement.
In view of this, two points of interest arise.
One, Mr Shanmugam, usually quick to counter allegations about his personal dealings, has not refuted reports on this episode, despite there being widespread and ongoing discussion of the case on the internet for weeks.
Two, given that housing and property prices are crucial issues in Singapore, the sale of Mr Shanmugam’s property is a matter of massive public concern. Yet, it is only alternative media outlets that have afforded this issue coverage; the Singapore Press Holdings and Mediacorp remain tightlipped.
Given these circumstances, the Singapore Democratic Party calls on Minister Shanmugam and the Government to answer the following questions:
1. Who is the purchaser of Mr Shanmugam’s property and is this buyer a Singapore citizen?
2. Who/what entity is the owner of Jasmine Villa Settlement?
3. Did Mr Shanmugam disclose to former PM Lee Hsien Loong and current PM Lawrence Wong the existence and details of the transaction and, if so, what were the PMs’ responses?
4. What were the steps taken by Minister Shanmugam and the Government to ensure that the funds for the sale were not involved in money-laundering schemes?
5. How was the process of the valuation of the property conducted and by whom?
The Ministerial Code of Conduct unambiguously states that: “A Minister must scrupulously avoid any actual or apparent conflict of interest between his office and his private financial interests.”
This aforementioned sale reportedly took place shortly after the Ridout Road episode, which involved another Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, and remains unsatisfactorily dealt with in the eyes of many Singaporeans.
Thus, it is important that Mr Shanmugam urgently answers the above questions, for the matter involves not just him but also his party, the Government, and Singapore at large.

SDP VICE-CHAIRMAN BRYAN LIM CALLS FOR FULL TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILIRT FROM MOT AND SMRT
The SDP expresses our huge concerns about the recent partial breakdown of the SMRT East-West line which has exposed the frailties and deep-seated problems underlying our train system.
A spate of incidents which include the deaths of two SMRT maintenance staff, Bishan MRT tunnel flooding and Joo Koon train collision in 2016 and 2017 were clear warning signs that the 35-year-old system badly needed a comprehensive review so as not to compromise the safety of the millions of commuters as well as the train staff.
However, despite spending more than $2.5 billion on overhauling the ageing North-South and East-West lines to improve train reliability, the system had suffered its worst breakdown in history on 25 September 2024 with an unprecedented six-day disruption of the EW Line.
Former Transport Minister, Mr Khaw Boon Wan’s had boldly pledged in 2017 that there will be a “quantum improvement when the core system is replaced each time”.
Seven years down the line and after spending so much money, we are still saddled with an ailing public train system. And yet, public transport fares have continued to rise since 2021 (by 2.2%). It had increased by 2.9% in 2022 and recorded its highest hike last year (7%). In December this year, the fares will have risen by another 6%. The justification given for the year-on-year increase is to “keep the operators financially sustainable and enable them to provide reliable services and pay good wages”.
Notably, SMRT Chairman Seah Moon Ming felt that a balance needs to be struck between rail reliability and cost of maintenance which raises the question of whether the SMRT is more concerned about its profit margins at the expense of commuters’ safety.
The SDP calls for a full and thorough accounting of the $2.5 billion or more spent, including an itemized breakdown of the expenditure as well as the release of information related to it.
The Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat and the SMRT owe the public full transparency and accountability over its management of our train system. Its record over the years has been dismal, at best, and dangerous, at worst.

CSJ had a night out with some of his CEC colleagues.

A night out with some of my CEC colleagues at a Wild Rice play called Accidental Death of an Activist. Pictured here with directors Ivan Heng and Glen Goei.
The hilarious spoof centres around the police trying to cover up the mysterious death of an activist conducting a lone protest holding nothing but a card of a smiley face.
I've always been a fan of Glen's and Ivan's work. Goodness knows Singapore needs a healthy boost of theatre.
Wild Rice's next production: Wizard of Oz. My kids loved these performances when they were little. Watch out for their announcement and bring along your children.
