Almost a decade ago, way before the talk about a wealth tax in this year’s Budget, the SDP had already been calling for a more progressive tax system where the ultra-rich shoulder more of the govt’s tax revenue.
Whether it is in the form of raising the GST for luxury items or increasing personal income tax for the top earners or re-introducing estate duty for the wealthy, the SDP has been at the forefront pushing a fairer tax schedule.
These tax increases will go towards paying for economic and social programmes for the lower-income groups.
But in 2015, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, rather drama queen-like, claimed that what we advocated would lead Singapore into economic perdition.
He said: “The SDP will set us on the road to Greece, and it is the duty of my team to awaken Singaporeans to the dangers of such policy prescriptions."
Fast-forward to Budget 2022. Now, his party will increase taxes for the top 1.2% earners as well as increase duty on high-end real estate.
Why? Because, as Finance Minister Lawrence Wong explains, “Wealth taxes are needed to build a fairer society…”
You think?
This is not about bragging rights and who said what first. Rather, it is about the quality of the opposition. Whether it is the education system, foreign talent, healthcare funding, housing, CPF system, etc, the SDP has been taking the lead in formulating policies to take S’pore into the future.
Go to our website and read all about our proposals here: https://yoursdp.org/policy/
The PAP will criticise our ideas only to adopt them eventually.
More important to note: We’ve done all this while not in Parliament. Imagine what we can achieve in it.
S’pore deserves an opposition that looks and thinks ahead, one that does its homework and, most importantly, one that maintains the steely resolve to speak up for the little guy.
Back to Balakrishnan. He said in the 2020 GE: “Let me state for the record, we will never have 10 million (people). We won't even have 6.9 million.”
Let’s all watch to see if this statement ages better than his SDP-will-lead-Singapore-down-the-road-to-Greece prediction.
May be an image of 1 person and text that says The SDP will set us on the road to Greece, and itis the duty of my team to awaken S'poreans to the dangers of such policy prescriptions.

CSJ manages to scold PAP while commenting about Russia-Ukraine war.

When Russia started its attack on Ukraine, I said to myself that the PAP will pontificate about the importance of sovereignty and remaining vigilant.
Like clock-work, the party published a statement titled: “Ukraine situation is stark reminder that S’pore should never take sovereignty for granted”.
No argument there.
But there’s another lesson in this Russian aggression that Mr Lee Hsien Loong and his ilk choose to ignore: The need for a democratic system with proper checks-and-balance that prevents politicians from going rogue.
In 2007, I wrote about Russia and drew parallels to the Singapore system (reproduced in my book Democratically Speaking). I highlight three below:
1. Like Singapore, Russia’s electoral system is stacked against the opposition.
2. The Putin government exerts strong control over the state’s media.
3. Russia also disallows even a lone individual from conducting a protest (although it’s more difficult to control defiant Russian citizens).
I warned at that time that worshipping free trade and profit-making at the expense of developing a democratic system will not lead to any good.
Then just yesterday, I heard on BBC World Service journalist and author, Peter Hitchens, decry the West’s ignoring of Vladimir Putin’s gradual power-grab in Russia through the years.
Instead of helping to build a democratic Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, Hitchens said that “carpetbaggers from the West” descended on the country, shouting about the free market while keeping silent about the erosion of the country’s hard-won freedoms.
It is this lack of democracy that has allowed Putin to increasingly behave czar-like and ultimately order the attack on its neighbour – an act that brings grief not only to Ukrainians but, eventually, Russians also.
So, if there’s any lesson that Singaporeans draw from this conflict, it is not just that we must remain vigilant, but also that we need – urgently – to develop our democratic institutions which include a strong parliamentary opposition able to check the ruling party and offer the people an alternative government.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: People before profits, rights before riches, wisdom before wealth.

CSJ says PAP are copycats........................................ again.

The PAP, in its infinite wisdom, has now decided to implement a points-based system to admit foreigners into our job market.
Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng announced the measure in Parliament yesterday.
But – surprise, surprise – the idea is another one proposed by the SDP. Ten. Years. Ago.
Here’s how TodayOnline reported the PAP version: “foreigners wanting to work in Singapore… will also have to meet a minimum score under a points system.”
The criteria for the award of points include:
1. the applicant’s qualifications,
2. the “nationality diversity” of the hiring firm,
3. the extent of skills shortage in the industry and
4. whether the firm engages in innovation activities.
Now, compare this with the SDP’s version:
1. qualifications and skill set will be used to assess potential foreign workers
2. align high-quality global talent to our manpower needs
3. employers must demonstrate a shortage of their desired skill set in the job market
4. foreigner workers should be admitted on the basis of skill and innovation
You can read our population policy paper here https://yoursdp.org/.../Policy-2019/Building-a-people.pdf (in particular from pg 24).
The PAP calls their scheme COMPASS (Complementarity Assessment Framework). We call ours the Talent Track Scheme. Imitation, by any other name, is the sincerest form of flattery.
This points-based system to admit foreign workers is but just the latest example. Another is the recent introduction of wealth taxes. Read about the others here: https://yoursdp.org/.../first_they_criticise_then_they_copy/
My friends, this is the reality: The PAP throws around its bombast about having top-notch brains with exclusive ability to lead Singapore – and then demand to be paid staggering salaries.
Don’t be bamboozled. The reality is that there are many who are more capable and, more importantly – much more importantly, possess the spirit of public-service to lead this nation, not obsessed with wealth and power.
Singaporeans, now more than ever, need to break out from the decades of indoctrination that the PAP and only the PAP can lead Singapore.
The SDP has shredded this myth time and again.
