Politician Chee Soon Juan tries his hand at running a cafe
Singapore politician Chee Soon Juan has teased about a new cafe he is opening with his wife up at Rochester Mall, near Buona Vista station.
His followers raved about the news on his Facebook page last night after the leader of the Singapore Democratic Party shared a sneak preview of his cafe, called Orange & Teal, which he was opening on Friday. Chee, 58, said he will reveal more details of the menu later, but promises to Muslim friends that there won’t be pork or lard, while glassware for alcoholic beverages will be stored separately.
“We’ve been working on it for the past several months and it’s finally coming to fruition,” he wrote online. “It’s been a long-term dream of ours to have a place where Singaporeans come together to not just have a great meal or have that heart warming cuppa, but a place where we get together with our loved ones and friends and get to know each other all over again.”
He added: “A place where intelligent discussion, even impassioned debate, takes place. A place where the conversation’s even better.”
He said that he also plans to use his cafe as a center for social causes – something he will elaborate on in the near future. In his post last night, he shared a photo of a part of his cafe, which had teal walls and orange furniture, just like the name.
“Congratulations Dr. Chee and Mrs. Chee! Looking so elegant already, the cafe,” Facebook user Wati Ismail wrote in the comments.
“Wishing you guys all the best in your new venture we all know how you are committed to serving us and l trust a good showing and support from your supporters will be there l definitely check it out best of luck,’ another, named Aloysius Andy Peters, said.
Chee has been leading his social-liberal political party for nearly 30 years but has never succeeded in entering parliament. He lost to the ruling People’s Action Party’s Murali Pillai in the Bukit Batok constituency during last year’s general election.
