BANGKOK: Thai doctors have seen success in treating severe cases of the new coronavirus with combination of medications for flu and HIV, with initial results showing vast improvement 48 hours after applying the treatment, they said on Sunday (Feb 2).

The doctors from Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok said a new approach in coronavirus treatment had improved the condition of several patients under their care, including one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who tested positive for the coronavirus for 10 days.

The drug treatment includes a mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, in combination with flu drug oseltamivir in large doses.

"This is not the cure, but the patient's condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Dr Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

"The outlook is good but we still have to do more study to determine that this can be a standard treatment."

Chinese health officials have already been administering the HIV and flu drugs to fight the coronavirus. The use of the three together in a cocktail seemed to improve the treatment, the Thai doctors said.

Another doctor said that a similar approach in two other patients resulted in one displaying some allergic reaction but the other showed improvement.

"We have been following international practices, but the doctor increased the dosage of one of the drugs," said Somsak Akkslim, director-general of the Medical Services Department, referring to the flu medicine Oseltamivir.

Thailand has recorded 19 cases of coronavirus. Of the Thai patients, eight have recovered and gone home while 11 are still under treatment in hospitals.

Somsak said the health ministry will meet on Monday to discuss the successful treatment in the case of the 70-year-old but said it is still too soon to say that this approach can be applied to all cases.

"Initially we will apply this approach only to severe cases," he said.

So finally, its that easy. Bet by Songkran all will be forgotten. Good work Thailand.

prc tiongs started with the cocktail first but were very stingy with the dosage thus not very effective. thais are generous and gung-ho, give high dosages, thus hit the jackpot. two great aspects of thais are their generosity and hospitality.

Ah Loong and his buzz around biomed came to nought, again.

Every single God damned thing that chow ah quah touched turned to a failure.

No success to show for all the PR effort.

Havent heard of "anti viral" flu drugs before only flu vaccination and antibiotics

good point, made me go look it up.

What is antiretroviral therapy?

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the use of HIV medicines to treat HIV infection. People on ART take a combination of HIV medicines (called an HIV treatment regimen) every day.

ART is recommended for everyone who has HIV. ART can’t cure HIV, but HIV medicines help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. ART also reduces the risk of HIV transmission.

How do HIV medicines work?

HIV attacks and destroys the infection-fighting CD4 cells of the immune system. Loss of CD4 cells makes it hard for the body to fight off infections and certain HIV-related cancers.

HIV medicines prevent HIV from multiplying (making copies of itself), which reduces the amount of HIV in the body (also called the viral load). Having less HIV in the body gives the immune system a chance to recover. Even though there is still some HIV in the body, the immune system is strong enough to fight off infections and certain HIV-related cancers.

By reducing the amount of HIV in the body, HIV medicines also reduce the risk of HIV transmission. A main goal of ART is to reduce a person’s viral load to an undetectable level. An undetectable viral load means that the level of HIV in the blood is too low to be detected by a viral load test. People with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative partner through sex.

Even prc competing to be no.1 to create the vaccine.

Of course, it's an engineered virus made in Wuhan's P4 bio lab.

Nice...Art is for HIV...but when one is down with flu there is only antibiotics...Tamiflu was somewhat of a hoax...influenza vaccination is another thing whole heartedly...theoretically any therapy that can suppress HIV should be strong enough to suppress wuhan...made in china virus behaves like made in china products

That is why Thailand is rated better than Sinkieland despite not having to pay millions to their ministers.

Yes it was a genius moment for Thailand to try this solution. Reminds me of Dr House, sounds like something he would try

There is a logical reason why medical doctors from both China and Thailand experimented with using anti-HIV drugs for the Wuhan virus : genetic sections from the HIV virus have apparently been found inside the Wuhan virus, which led to speculation that the Wuhan virus might be a bioweapon. However, in all likelihood, this is not the case as genetic materials appear to proliferate across different viruses, and/or have connected ancestry.

This alternative remedy not approved yet easy to try on a 83 year old ah ma with multiple comorbidities as she may go soon...try on a younger person the person may get liver failure (notes wuhan causes kidney failure)

..... u think BE, their God fathers, will come in take over the food supply chains...

CORONAVIRUS | A 41-year-old bachelor from Selangor has become the first Malaysian to test positive for coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
This was announced by Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (above) in a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today.

According to the minister, the man had returned from Singapore after being there from Jan 16 to 23 on a business trip.
While in Singapore, he had been in meetings that were attended by “international delegates”, including those from China.
