SEOUL: An international business gathering at a plush Singapore hotel has been linked to coronavirus cases that have spread across the region, in a worrying sign of secondary transmissions from an epidemic that originated in China.
Malaysia on Tuesday said its first citizen to be infected with the virus – a 41-year-old man – had attended a meeting in Singapore in mid-January that had included several international delegations, some from China.
A 38-year-old South Korean man who came into contact with the Malaysian when he travelled to Singapore for a business conference has also been infected, the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Wednesday.

He had a meal with the Malaysian man, as well as several other South Koreans during the conference, South Korea’s Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported.
Singapore’s health ministry said on Tuesday that the meeting involving the Malaysian took place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, adding the city-state was working to identify individuals in close contact with the cases.
Singapore’s health ministry did not immediately reply to a request for additional comment on the Korean case on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Singapore could not be immediately reached for comment.
Singapore – one of the worst-hit countries outside China in the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) – has reported 24 cases of coronavirus, including some local transmission cases.
The death toll from the epidemic – believed to have surfaced late last year in a market selling illegal wildlife at the central Chinese city of Wuhan – passed 490 on Wednesday.

LONDON (Reuters) - European stocks jumped sharply on reports that a Chinese university found a drug to treat people with the new coronavirus and researchers in the UK saying they made a "significant breakthrough" in finding a vaccine, several London-based traders said.

A scientist leading UK's research into a coronavirus vaccine told Sky https://bit.Iy/3baZDMQ news that his team have made a "significant breakthrough" by reducing a part of the normal development time from two to three years to just 14 days.

Meanwhile, traders also cited a Chinese TV report that a research team at Zhejiang University has found an effective drug to treat people with the new coronavirus sharp for a rise in stocks.

Reuters has not verified those media reports, but several traders have attributed the sharp move in markets to the reports.

The benchmark pan-European STOXX 600 <.STOXX> index, which started the day on the backfoot, reversed early losses and rose as much as 0.8% on day.

U.S. stock futures also turned positive, rising 0.5%.

"Equity markets in Europe have had a sharp turnaround on the back of unconfirmed reports," said David Madden, market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

"Traders have taken the view that the situation is now more likely to be under control and hopefully the spread of the health crisis will be stemmed and it hopefully leads to a return to normality in China and around the world."

In the forex market, riskier currencies including the Australian dollar climbed 0.3% at $0.6758. The Swedish crown hit a near two-week high at 9.56 crowns per dollar while the euro/Swiss franc exchange rate, a barometer of risk sentiment, strengthened.

The scientist leading the UK's research into a coronavirus vaccine says his team have made a significant breakthrough by reducing a part of the normal development time from "two to three years to just 14 days".
Professor Robin Shattock, head of mucosal infection and immunity at Imperial College London, said the team will now be able to start testing the vaccine on animals as early as next week, with the hope that human studies could take place in the summer.
Speaking to Sky News he said: "Conventional approaches usually take at least two to three years before you even get to the clinic. And we've gone from that sequence to generating a candidate in the laboratory in 14 days.
"And we will have it in animal models by the beginning of next week. We've short-tracked that part. The next phase will be to move that from early animal testing into the first human studies.
"And we think with adequate funding we could do that in a period of a few months."

The UK Government is working to charter a final flight to bring British nationals back from coronavirus-hit Wuhan as Britons in mainland China are urged to get out after the outbreak continued to claim more lives.
The plane is expected to leave in the early hours of Sunday morning local time and will land at RAF Brize Norton, the Foreign Office said - adding that they want to ensure that all British nationals in Hubei province contact their team to register if they want to leave on the flight.
It is understood that 165 Britons and their dependants remain in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, while 108 people have requested assistance to leave as of the early hours of Wednesday.
A total of 94 UK nationals and family members have already been evacuated to Britain from Wuhan on two flights which arrived on Friday and Sunday.
Professor Shattock added: "It's not going to be too late if this becomes a pandemic and if it circulates around the world. We still don't know much about the epidemic itself so it may wane over the summer months if it is like influenza.
"We may see a second wave come through on a global basis and if it comes a vaccine will be really important and would be in place to tackle that."
Britain has pledged £20m to CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, an international agency set up in 2017 to deal with health crises exactly like this one.
And a further £20m has been earmarked for rapid research into coronavirus here in the UK.

The Chicoms will never let the vaccine reach the peasants, whom they want to cull in order to reduce their numbers.

In that sales meeting, where 94 have left the country. Which company is this? Maybe their own staff in those countries are in danger of being infected. No where can I find the name of this company. Are they blocking the media? Is their reputation more important than the lives of its own staff and the public?

A at 6-2-2020 , Why Singapore has higher reported numbers (30 cases) than Taiwan (16 cases ) ?
Taiwan is nearer to China but the Taiwan authorities have very good control of the Wuhan virus by restricting and checking the inflow of China citizens to Taiwan.
Whereas,Singapore is further away from China but has poor control of Wuhan virus due to the high numbers of China workers returning to
Singapore after the Chinese New Year holidays.
