An airport cleaner has died after being hit by a PRC man who hijacked a taxi.

According to various reports, the bizarre incident happened this morning (17 Mar) between 6am to 7am at the Airport Boulevard, and ended up with a taxi crashing into the front glass doors of the Budget Terminal.

A spokesperson from ComfortDelGro told Channel NewsAsia that a Citycab taxi had picked up a passenger early this morning and the passenger had become violent while on the way to the airport.

The taxi driver had stopped the cab at the roadside near the airport, and had activated the distress button before getting out of the vehicle.

The cabbie, Mr Yao, told Shin Min Daily News that he had picked up the man at Still Road, which is near the Eunos area.

The man had sat at the front passenger seat and had told Mr Yao that he was returning to China on a Tiger Airways flight.

"Just as I was turning towards the Budget Terminal, he hit me with his left hand", said Mr Yao.

"So I got out of the taxi, then he pushed me and hijacked my taxi, and drove away" he added.

However, the man did not appear to know how to handle the taxi as he lost control and hit a traffic light, then crashed into the Budget Terminal.

The taxi crashed into the building's front glass doors and hit a 34-year-old Indian cleaning supervisor who was on duty at the time.

Police received a call at 6.50am regarding the incident, and the cleaner was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 7.13am this morning.

The PRC man behind the wheel is said to have sustained abrasions on his forehead during the crash and was sent to the hospital.

Witnesses say that as he was arrested by the police, the man was raving about his air ticket being taken away.

The cabbie is also understood to have sought treatment at a hospital.

A 30-year-old technician from China was charged on Sunday with voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, after allegedly hijacking a taxi and ramming it into a man, killing him.

The technician was on his way to the airport in a taxi on Saturday morning when he supposedly lost his cool suddenly, and accused the cabby of hiding his belongings.

He allegedly forced CityCab driver Yeow Chuwee Lam out of the car, and then drove recklessly towards the Budget Terminal, where he crashed into cleaning supervisor Chandra Mogan.

A Chinese national facing a robbery with hurt charge was charged on Friday with causing the death of a cleaning supervisor through dangerous driving at Budget Terminal.

Yuan Zhenghua, 30, a technician, was charged last Sunday with punching cabby Yeow Chuwee Lam on the back and strangling the 57-year-old while robbing him of the Citicab taxi at Airport Boulevard at about 6.50am last Saturday.

The three fresh charges state that he drove dangerously by causing the taxi to veer from the road onto the pavement at a fast speed before hitting cleaning supervisor Chandra Mogan Panjanathan, 34, and a traffic light pole.

The incident resulted in the death of the Malaysian father of four, who was operating a cleaning machine in front of Budget Terminal departure hall at the time.

Man behind taxi hijack at airport gets 25 months' jail

A China national -- who hijacked a taxi, crashed it into the then-Budget Terminal, and caused the death of an airport staff -- has been sentenced to 25 months' jail.

SINGAPORE: A China national -- who hijacked a taxi, crashed it into the then-Budget Terminal, and caused the death of an airport staff -- has been sentenced to 25 months' jail.

31-year-old Yuan Zhenghua was on his way to the airport on March 17, 2012, when he demanded that his cab driver stop near the terminal.

Yuan, who was on his way to catch a flight to return to China for good, accused the cabby, Mr Yeow Chuwee Lam, of keeping his belongings. He punched Mr Yeow and forced him out of his seat.

Yuan later got into Mr Yeow's seat and sped off at 105 kilometres per hour, crashing into Mr Chandra Mogan Panjanathan, who was cleaning the pedestrian walkway at the terminal. The cleaner died on the spot.

Yuan was sentenced on five charges. They are: stealing a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and causing death, voluntarily causing hurt, driving without a license as well as driving without valid insurance.

In mitigation, Yuan's lawyers said he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the offence. However, they added that the disorder did not excuse or justify Yuan's actions.

His lawyers, who are defending him pro-bono, said Yuan is "extremely remorseful" for the tragic consequences resulting from the events.

In his judgement, District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt said many were horrified with the incident.

Judge Chay said it was understandable that there was much outpouring of public grief and condolences, following Mr Chandra's death.

He added that under these circumstances, the sentencing principle of retribution -- in addition to that of general deterrence -- is "a very material consideration".

Judge Chay also took Yuan's mental disorder into consideration. He said Yuan's psychiatric report concluded that he was legally sane, although his actions were influenced by the active symptoms of his disorder.

"I considered that the accused's mental disorder at the time of the offences would lessen his moral culpability to some degree. Nonetheless, he was aware of his actions and he has to account for them accordingly," he said.

Yuan's 25-month jail term would be backdated to March 18, 2012.

His lawyers said they have not been instructed to appeal against the sentence.
