All this talk about who will come out ahead in the Olympics is very much like the current situation of what is happening on world stage. No one really cares about the rest the the nations. All that matters is USA vs China. Globally as EU implodes China and US will remain the two most powerful economy.
On the US side there is insecurity that they will no longer be the dominant economic player - just like the Olympics. China on the other hand is overly confident (don't really blame them given how far they have come) and think that they can come out ahead in the medal count or are the most powerful nation on earth.
That US insecurity is quick to blame any Chinese improvement on drugs (Olympics) or manipulation of currency (economy).
Then there is also the hard truth that China with 4.5 times the population of the US will easily catch up with US GDP over the next 5 years just like how that huge population, more affluent consumers - makes it lucrative to be in sports given the endorsements - meaning we will be seeing a big influx of dominant Chinese athletes come the next Olympics.
But the Chinese need to face reality, at the moment, the US remains the dominant player both in sports and economy.
