I would choose Chiangmai over JB anytime having spent a few years in LOS 
It's the combination of factors like pace of life there, the climate, culture and friendly people and plenty of fresh natural foods easily available...... not forgetting to mention Chiangmai gals are the prettiest in LOS. :p
JB is too close to singkieland and staying there will always remind me of this piece of shit country. :(
