BUCHAREST: Former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu was released from detention late Thursday night (around 10pm Romanian time, 4am Singapore time).

He had been held in preventive custody at Rahova prison in Bucharest for seven months. His trial began on October 6.

But now Ionescu has been placed under judicial supervision, which means that he cannot leave the country and must show up for his Court dates. His next appearance in Court will be on January 12 next year.

Ionescu is facing charges of homicide, causing physical injuries and making false statements, arising from two hit-and-run accidents in Singapore last December.

The decision on Thursday to release him came after his defence counsel had appealed to a higher tribunal in Bucharest.

The lawyers had previously applied to a Romanian court, which decided against his request when the trial was adjourned on November 17.

But after many attempts to get their client out of prison, they have now finally succeeded.

The tribunal's reason for granting Ionescu's request was not available on Thursday night. It will likely be known on Friday when the Court reopens.

Ionescu cut a relieved figure on Thursday night when he spoke to reporters outside the prison gates, moments after his release.

He said he would continue to prepare his defence because he considered himself innocent.

He was also glad the decision to release him came when it did. He said it was his wife's 50th birthday on Thursday.

And after a brief moment with his lawyers, friends and son Bogdan, the former diplomat headed home.

What an idiot. If he had stayed in Singapore, admitted his crime then invoked diplomatic immunity, he would still be a diplomat here. If he waived immunity and pleaded guilty, he would have paid a fine and still be a diplomat here.

Romania is part of the EU. The joker can easily take a train/plane/drive anywhere in Europe without going through immigrations. No one in Romania will know if he had left the country. I would seriously like to know how anyone is going to prevent him from leaving the country

The recent events of Alan Shadrake's trail gives a lot of credibility to his story that he was "set up" by the PAP government to silence him from speaking up.

You are really suffering from some serious delusion. Even Ionescu's case you are linking up with Alan Shahdrake's story. Hasn't it already been shown that he was the culprit?

Your way of writing is becoming more and more like Temasek Review. You linked stories which has no connections to one another and solely based on your deductions and you would always love to add in your statements with "empirical evidence" being shown.

You want to add credibility to the things you wrote, but you should go on a case by case basis and not link them as a whole to achieve your motive (God knows what you are thinking)

The moniker aurvandil allows RADM (minus 6 ranks) MS Goh to behave like an idiot, must be too much bashing from Joseph Ong.

thank u for clear explanation.

Which is why I say this guy is an idiot. He should just invoke immunity, Singapore expel him, Romania post him to Jakarta instead. Make so much noise now lose his job and spend time in Romanian prison.
