KUALA LUMPUR - A dispatch rider, who was moonlighting as a taxi driver, was slashed to death and burned in his vehicle after what is believed to be a robbery.
Police were alerted at around 1am yesterday after Fire and Rescue Department personnel put out the blaze and discovered the partially burnt body of a man.
Victim S. Nallan, 26, worked as a dispatch rider with a courier company by day and drove a taxi by night for additional income.
His brother Saravanan, in his 30s, said Nallan received a call at around 9pm to send a passenger to the KL International Airport.
"I could not believe it when I received a call from the police informing me about his death at around 4am," he said at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur mortuary yesterday.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said police were alerted after passers-by noticed the burning taxi.
"Initial investigations revealed that the victim's valuables and cash were nowhere to be found.
"Further checks revealed that the taxi had also been ransacked," he said.
ACP Zainuddin said the victim was slashed multiple times and set on fire in the taxi.
On Oct 9, a taxi driver, believed to be a victim of robbers posing as passengers, was found stabbed to death about 100m from his vehicle at a cemetery in Cheras.
In that case, police believe the man, in his 40s, was attacked in his taxi and had run out of the vehicle before collapsing and dying from wounds to his head and abdomen.
