Yang Chung-ping, now 32, rented an apartment on Hsing-hsueh St. in Hsinchu City, and knew the victim, surnamed Jen, who lived in the same building and worked for the landlord in August 2007. Yang presumed Jen would have plenty of cash in the house since she collected rent for the landlord. Yang broke into Jen's house on Aug. 22, 2007, at midnight, but became furious when all he could find was an NT$1,000 bill.
Holding a fruit knife as a weapon, Yang woke up the victim and demanded more money. He strangled Jen to death when she tried to flee and carried the body to the fifth floor, where Yang lived. Yang washed the corpse and raped it twice in his place. He attempted to divide the body into parts by trying to cut off her hand at the wrist with the fruit knife, but failed. He believed it would be easier to destroy the body when it was cooked. Yang therefore put Jen's left palm into boiling water, but gave up later when he thought it was too much trouble. He covered the body with curtains and left it on the balcony. Jen's family found her missing the next day. They broke into Yang's apartment and found the corpse. The prosecutors indicted Yang for murder and asked for the death penalty. Prosecutors appealed to higher courts after Yang was sentenced to life imprisonment in the trial of first instance. The Supreme Court decided that Yang would receive a life sentence instead of the death penalty after he apologized to Jen's family in court. Yang was sentenced to another two years and six months in prison for raping and damaging the body. Jen's family was not happy that Yang "only" got life imprisonment, which allows him to apply for parole after he completes 25 years behind bars.
