Bukit Batok by-election to be held on May 7

SINGAPORE — The Bukit Batok by-election will be held on May 7, about two months after its former Member of Parliament David Ong stepped down due to “personal indiscretions”.

The Writ of Election, which sets the election process in motion, was issued on Wednesday (April 20), setting Nomination Day on April 27 and Polling Day on May 7.

From the time the writ was issued, there is the mandated five clear working days till Nomination Day on April 27. From there, it is a further nine days of campaigning and one Cooling-Off Day before voters in Bukit Batok, a single-member constituency, head to the ballot box.

Pending any last-minute surprises, the by-election is expected to be a straight fight between the People’s Action Party (PAP) and the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

The PAP has named lawyer Murali Pillai, 48, as its candidate to defend the ward, while SDP chief Dr Chee Soon Juan, 53, has announced that he will stand in the by-election.

SINGAPORE —

The Bukit Batok by-election will be held on May 7, about two months after its former Member of Parliament David Ong stepped down due to “personal indiscretions”.


Nomination Day falls on April 27, according to the Writ of Election which was issued on Wednesday (April 20). The Elections Department (ELD) said in a press release that Polling Day will fall on May 7, if the election is contested.

"Polling Day for the by-election is not a public holiday," the ELD added. "However, every employer shall on Polling Day allow every elector in his employ a reasonable period of time for voting. Polling hours are from 8 am to 8 pm."

Keming Primary School has been picked as the nomination centre. The candidates must submit their paperwork for the by-election to the Returning Officer at Keming Primary between 11 am and 12 noon on April 27.

Barring any last-minute surprises, the by-election is expected to be a straight fight between Mr Murali Pillai of the People’s Action Party (PAP) and Dr Chee soon Juan of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

Official campaigning, lasting nine days, will commence on April 27. The Cooling-Off Day falls on May 6.

The Bukit Batok ward was carved out of the Jurong Group Representation Constituency in the 2015 General Election. The ward lost its MP after Mr Ong resigned on March 12 over an alleged extramarital relationship with a grassroots volunteer.

In last year’s polls, the PAP won Bukit Batok with 73.02 per cent of the vote, defeating the SDP’s Sadasivam Veriyah, who got 26.4 per cent of the vote, and independent candidate Samir Salim Neji, who received just 0.6 per cent of the vote.
