Tan Kin Lian has already indicated he would not stand. He said that he has not seen anything changed from the previous EP elections to encourage him to contest. Anyway it points to a minority category elections for next EP.
Its a govt that has lost all credibility and is stumbling along. They don't even care if this all looks bad. What they want to do is avoid another EP where their man is not only is laughing stock but actually loses. They also cannot go back to a nominated President which I think many of us would accept to avoid the wayang of an EP because it was old man's legacy and he spoke at length about it. Doing a u-turn is to acknowledge failure and the humiliation that comes with it.
Look at Ong Ye Kung interview about the races and the EP. He himself does seem convinced about the view he put forth. And then we have Shanmugam and his claim about the importance of mandate. This despite Tony Tan's 35%.

The EP has turned something into a joke. After 50 years of independence, we still trying to define what the President is or what the President is not. PAP wants the educate the populace, emphasizing that this is not a GE and a president should not be running on national issues which they have no power anyway. But the candidates are just going to run on issues because in election, candidates are going to find way to differentiate themselves. Sinkies are also going to use this opportunity to cast protest votes without giving a damn about what voting for a president means.
Don't rub it in bro. That night we all knew that they going to do massive repairs to the EP. The results achieved was a shocker. Not only the Govt endorsed him, every union in NTUC endorsed him, so did all the Clans and the various business councils. The only ones who did not endorse him were the fast food chains, the petrol stations and the sex workers of Singapore.
The though for protest votes which would be quite substantial was appealing until I realised if it is indeed a minority Malay candidate, it is certain to be a walkover.
