Our cyclists are so bad that even EPO cant help much. Embarassing.:(
Not easy to have a Champ from SG. SG roads are not cyclist friendly at all.
On Tues morning at about 6am along Jln Buroh a big fight took place among a group of cyclists. About 6 or 7 bikes were strewn on the road causing a huge traffic jam along Jalan Buroh.
Here is a report from the parties involved about the spat that led to the fight:
Hi everyone,
Usually when we wake up for the morning rides, the only people we expect to be
beating up are ourselves on the bike, hamstering furiously away for a few short
hours, followed by resting and recovering well so we can be stronger to repeat
the cycle the next day. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune to be involved in a
physical confrontation on Tuesday morning. Well, since the masses demand their
pound of flesh from this human drama, here is my side of this whole sordid
affair.
The fast pack had just passed the LCK sprint point and were heading along Jln
Bahar towards Jurong Point and into Jln Boon Lay. There are at least 5 traffic
lights on the whole stretch and some riders were, in the usual fashion of the
fast pack, trying to beat the lights and drop the rest of the field for a few
laughs. A few like Vincent Ang succeeded of course, but they would eventually
ease up and the pack would catch them again. For safety's sake, I had to slow
down at some of the lights - namely the one before the Jurong Point MRT line and
the one after the Cadbury factory on an uphill. Common sense dictated it would
have been suicidal to cross after the first 5-6 riders managed to beat the
lights. That was the situation on the road leading up to the incident.
Usually, when you think someone is riding dangerously i.e. switching lines
abruptly w/o signaling, braking intermittently in the peleton, passing too
close for comfort, half-wheeling, passing on the left and so on, we would expect
the offending rider to be alerted by the affected party and informed him of his
mistake(s) in a civil and firm manner. Instead, what I got after slowing down at
the Jurong Point MRT traffic light was Alvin Lim screaming at me "Fuck you
don't go in front if you can't close the gap!" before speeding off into the
distance. He was so loud that I could hear him clearly over the music streaming
from my earphones. My response was simply to shrug this off and chalk one up to
the madness of riding in the fast pack.
At that point, I thought that would be the end of it, that he would have vented
all his frustration on not being able to bridge the gap to the escaping riders.
Unfortunately, that was not the case where a few minutes later after the Cadbury
traffic light (with me slowing down for the lights and riders escaping again)
where he took his frustration (again) out on my perceived lack of riding skills,
before speeding off into the distance again. No amount of logic or music could
block out the words "Eh, FUCK YOUR MOTHERR!" After the shock following that
sentence, my emotions just took over and it was just a matter of how hard I
could turn the pedals to catch and punish him for delivering this ultimate vile
insult. During the physical confrontation that ensued, Vincent Ang and one of
the other guest riders Ronnie Yap from Entro Cycles joined in the fray, with
Vincent holding me down in a neck lock, allowing Ronnie and Alvin to punch the
prescription sunglasses off my face and kick me in the shins and groin. The
affray was eventually broken up by Jeff Paine and his guys from Team Blackhawk,
along with Jurong Francis. I am grateful for your help.
Leading up to this incident, I had no prior history or encounters with Alvin Lim
or Ronnie Yap, except for seeing them occasionally on the 5AMs. From my
recollection and corroboration with eyewitnesses, I was riding predictably and
sensibly throughout the ride, avoiding any dangerous situations. After hearing
that Alvin is the 2011 Singapore MTB Champion, I can only surmise that maybe I'm
not good enough to be in the same pack as him with my alleged inferior riding
skills? I have no idea what caused him to instigate this abhorrent incident, and
I have never provoked or agitated any of these people to the best of my
knowledge. I have met Vincent once last year, where he gave me a lift out of
Sentosa after a dinner celebration. I'd count him as an acquaintance, and am
quite surprised as to the role he played in this episode.
I must say I'm sorry to all the riders in the fast pack for such an unpleasant
disruption to the ride. It was not my intention for fisticuffs to break out on
the ride and I'm sorry I could not control myself better. I promise next time I
hear an unkind word, I'll just let the legs do the talking on the bike, probably
up to 55km/h and more if needed.
To Jurong Francis, Jeff and the Blackhawk guys, thank you for doing the
honorable thing and breaking up the fight. I'm very sorry if any of the guys
were injured on my behalf as I hear some of you were kicked in the shins trying
to block Alvin and Ronnie.
Please everyone, it doesn't cost anything to be civil to your fellow riders. A
few firm but easy words are all it takes to remind riders to keep it safe.
Yours Sincerely,
Alex Lee

Dear Joyriders aka Joyfighters,
Not all of us have the benefit of getting tiertiary education and have the capacity to construct a write a whole essay on what happened from one side of the story.
However the facts are :
1. It was evident to me and others present (I've also asked around some other riders) in the fast pack that Alex rides in his "unique" manner, insists on staying in line but kept opening gaps, causing some frustration.
2. He admitted to wearing MP3 "over the music streaming from my earphones" while riding, increasing the danger to other riders from this action. "A few firm but easy words" might not have gotten thru what he was listening to.
3. He eloquently glosses over the fact that, he struck Alvin with his fist FIRST. A 20+ young man punching a senior 40+ ... no matter what insults were hurled, this initiating action cannot be condoned.
4. Alvin suffered a cut to his upper lip, had to see doctor for treatment. If Alex was pinned and attacked as mentioned by him, he would have been similarly injured or more but he's not.
5. He has made apologies for himself losing control, to others for their assistance and suffering BUT not to the person he struck so viciously.
In such cases where 2 sides have their own story, character references may shed some better light.
Cheers,
Ronnie Yap

i couldn't catch the live finish on tv1... that's a huge gap compared to the rest. I hope they've had a crash or something and try to do something heroic like hobble to the finish, rather than simply being out of gas
Hello ROnnie and All,
I agree strongly. Singapore is no place for cyclists. People like you guys ought to be barred from Singapore Roads. You all are a disgrace to Singapore society. And a danger to other road users.
Shame on you guys. Why not post your pics here for all to laugh.

Guess what... still LAST.. and lost more time.....
