The boy was hauled up as a suspect in a criminal case and investigating alleged offenses is the primary function of any police force.

How would you like it if you had a daughter or granddaughter who was molested and when she went to the police they refused to interview the alleged offender for fear of hurting his feelings. You'd be singing a different tune for sure.

A teenager's brain is not fully developed like an adult's, making them prone to committing unpredictable, irrational and impulsive acts.

For a minor, the police should never have interrogated the suspect alone without the presence of counsel and ensuring he understands his rights. Studies have shown that it is easier to extract false confessions out of juveniles than adults because they have been conditioned to obey authority.
