Benjamin Lim Thread

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

@JohnTan,
Your government needs to take some effective measures to halt the propagation of the widely available porno materials from impressionable teenagers like ah Ben.

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

"Mr Shanmugam cited an example of how TOC had published an article on Feb 5 claiming that the officers who visited Benjamin's school wore attire with the words "Police", despite an earlier police statement stating that they were in plain clothes.

TOC's claims were supposedly based on a posting by a woman, Ms Mary Anne Pereira, who later clarified with police that she was wrong and had got her dates mixed up. Ms Pereira has since taken down her post."

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

I read of a case ..... and I am convinced that a fair trial should be given before anyone should give the verdict that the boy has committed a crime.

he jumped before any fair trial can be given. what a loser.

Why does WP MP allow Shamu to deflect the issue?

Instead of apologizing and proposing solution, Shamu goes to attack critics who if not for their highlighting the case, the matter would have been swept under the rug.

SINGAPORE - The case of Benjamin Lee who fell to his death on Jan 26 sparked a discussion in parliament today (Mar 1) lasting near 3-hours. The 14-year-old teenager was interrogated by the police on the same day he died over molest allegations.

Members of Parliament grilled Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam and Acting Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng on the treatment of minors and facts about the case.

Here are five highlights discussed in Parliament today about the Benjamin Lim case:

1. "It is likely that on the evidence available to us, Benjamin would have received no more than a warning. He is unlikely to have been charged in court." - Mr Shanmugam

Young persons are given second chances where possible, Mr Shanmugam said as he laid bare the police's approach to offences by juveniles.

Factors like Benjamin's age, his first offence, and the nature of the alleged molest based on CCTV footage evidence, which can be characterised as being in the less serious range, would have been taken in account.

2. "[The Online Citizen] has gone on a planned, orchestrated campaign, using falsehoods, and has published about 20 articles or so as part of its campaign." -Mr Shanmugam

"It is sad to see the level of dishonesty and politicisation of this matter. Where the police are wrong - we must and will take action. But we should not allow deliberate, dishonest attacks." -Mr Shanmugam

Mr Shanmugam reserved harsh words for The Online Citizen (TOC), slamming the socio-political website for spreading falsehoods and inaccuracies about the Benjamin Lim case.

TOC reported that the officers had the word 'Police' emblazoned on their T-shirt when they went to find Benjamin. This was not true, Mr Shanmugam said, and that the officers were all in plain clothes.

Mr Shanmugam also disputed the number of police officers present at different parts of the interrogation, which TOC claimed was 5.

Contrary to allegations that Benjamin was denied food and drink, Mr Shanmugam said he was offered them, but he declined.

3. "Once the coroner announces his findings, both facts and conclusions, then people can offer their criticisms, viewpoints, comments." -Mr Shanmugam

Explaining why the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) refrained from commenting on the case, Mr Shanmugam said that the rule of sub judice sets out guidelines on what can be said or not when an inquiry is ongoing, and the police had to respect the process.

MHA was cautious in releasing information out of respect for Benjamin and his family, to give them time and space to grieve, Mr Shanmugam said.

4. "Mr Thio has a duty to be fair to the police officers involved. He need only to have referred to the police statement on Feb 1 to know that his facts are untrue." -Mr Shanmugam

Mr Shanmugam was referring to comments made by Mr Thio Shen Yi, president of The Law Society of Singapore on the case.

Mr Thio had also claimed in op-ed piece he wrote for the Singapore Law Gazette that there were five policemen who went to find Benjamin, and these five officers then escorted Benjamin back to the police station.

Stressing that the police adhered to procedures, Mr Shanmugam laid bare the facts, such as the number of police officers present at different parts of the interrogation and escort, the offer of food and drink which was declined, and that Benjamin was never handcuffed.

5. "Our schools provide a safe, nurturing and conducive environment for learning. Our schools will always take appropriate steps to look after their students' interests and well-being, but they cannot do so in a manner that will obstruct the police in their investigations." -Mr Ng

While schools will take care of students' interests and their well-being, schools have to co-operate with the police during investigations, Acting Minister of Education (School) Mr Ng Chee Meng said.

He noted that there are no straightforward answers as schools are responsible for their students, and the police, in the interest of public safety.

The Ministry of Home Affairs's review of police protocol involving young people will also involved the Ministry of Education (MOE), Mr Ng added.

The WP MPs should be asking questions like these ....

Did the police screw up? Is the government going to compensate the parents? Will someone in the SPF be held accountable? What about the school principal?

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

Do you know how devastating it is to the 11 year old girl to be molested? Don't scold police for doing their job to bring justice and closure to the girl.

agree. she carries emotional scars for the rest of her life. and she will grow up with severe depression, self-doubt and constant anxiety. in other words, a total wreck inside. sympathizers of the accused forget to understand and sympathize with irreversible damage done to the victim.

ok dearest honey, can i rent a room from you now? :p

who did Benjamin voted for?

Now you know how gossips spread. One Mary Anne Pereira said caught you police wearing T shirts with "police" words on it. And mob believed as gospel truth no need evidence. When home affairs minister said the official statement, the mob then say where is the evidence? Why mob no ask Mary Anne Pereira for evidence? Now this Mary Anne Pereira admitted to police said she was wrong and got dates mixed up. So you should know who is stating the truth.

WP MPs should chastise the minister for trying to deflect the criticisms. WP MPs should tell the minister if not for the work of the online fifth estate, the matter would have been swept under the carpet. WP MPs should take the opportunity to lambaste the failure of the mainstream press to highlight issues that concern the well-being of the people.

"It is sad to see the level of dishonesty and politicisation of this matter. Where the police are wrong - we must and will take action. But we should not allow deliberate, dishonest attacks." -Mr Shanmugam

WP MPs should respond in this manner ...it is so typical of the PAP government to attack the whistle blower. Highlighting the failure of government agency is not politicization. Politiciziation is when the minister, hiding under parliamentary privilege criticize the fifth estate, not giving an opportunity for them to respond.

Mr Shanmugam reserved harsh words for The Online Citizen (TOC), slamming the socio-political website for spreading falsehoods and inaccuracies about the Benjamin Lim case.

WP MPs should defend TOC and chastise the minister.
If not for the work of TOC, this matter would have been swept under the rug.
The details are NOT important ...the fact is that because of the police tactics, a child died. That cannot be denied.
The minister is trying to deflect.

WP MPs should tell the minister that is his interpretation of the process. In other democracies, the press is often asking question while investigation is being conducted. It is the norm.
Tell the minister that he is talking hogwash!

WP MPs should tell the minister to stop deflecting. The issue is not the critics but the handling of the teenager by the police. Is the minister stating that the police did no wrong?

Thio and the fifth estate were merely citing witness observation. Why does the minister accuse critics of falsehood? The minister should be reprehended for using parliament to attack critics.

WP MPs should ask the minister if he is admitting the procedure adhered by the police was wrong?

The onus is on the minister to prove that the police did NO wrong. And the minister must tell us what does he intend to do about this. Right now, he is saying nothing will be done.

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

Singapore culture (elitism, unforgiveness, cover-backside) the ultimate reason for Benjamin Lim's suicide?
In my 2¢ opinion:
Mom n school counsellor made mistake of not allowing Benjamin to attend school camp: which would have resulted in ostracism (everyone would find out that Benjamin was a 'molester' sooner than later due to his absence from important school camp): which is what precipitated his suicide I think....

I think school counsellor and mom UNDERESTIMATED the importance of sec3 camp to the student and
1) didn't consult police or investigating officer if Ben Lim was such a dangerous criminal he should be banned with immediate effect from any co-ed school camp.
2) unilaterally decided to remove Benjamin from the school camp without consulting / discussing with him.

I suggest that the society investigate if the school counsellor's suggestion to remove Benjamin from the school camp without sufficient consultation (with police IO etc) was a right decision in this case; did mother agree w school counsellor too readily? (Could mom have called IO about school camp issue for some advice).
(Or is the school counsellor so overworked that she has no time/ opportunity to supervise or counsel Benjamin should he choose to continue to attend the school camp that he had earlier registered for).

2¢.

SINGAPORE
The Benjamin Lim case: What happened on Jan 25 and 26
In his ministerial statement on Tuesday, Minister K Shanmugam detailed what happened on the two days leading up to 14-year-old Benjamin Lim's death, based on investigations and CCTV footage.

Posted 01 Mar 2016 16:54 Updated 01 Mar 2016 18:32
... ...
Benjamin admitted to police that he had "intentionally" touched a part of the girl's body.

After the interview, he was placed alone in a secured Temporary Holding Room, and was offered food and drink, which he declined.

Benjamin's mother then arrived at the station, and a statement was recorded from her. Benjamin was then released on bail and he left the station with his mother and sister - that was the last contact between him and police. He had spent about 3.5 hours in the station, including the time police spent with his mother.

Based on investigations, Benjamin went home with his mother, had lunch, then played games on his phone.

A school counsellor then called Benjamin's mother, after which she told Benjamin that he would not be going to the school camp the next day.

JAN 26, ABOUT 4.20PM

Benjamin was found dead at the foot of his block.

WP MPs should mock the Education Minister for being an empty vessel. He has offered no insight or even bother to investigate if the school could have handled the situation better. A life is dead but it is no big deal for this minister.

WP MPs ....time for you to act like the official opposition.

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

Opposition cocksuckers now very quiet on social media about this case. No more accusing Singapore's finest of torturing Benjamin or having unprofessional conduct. Now you can see why opposition social media sites are seen to have little credibility.

Only idiots will take the minister statement as truthful.

How do you know if Mary Anne Pereira was not forced to change her statement so as to help the SPF not look bad?

And why did the minister attack critics who used Pereira's observations in their reports? Minister accused them of being not truthful when they were merely taking the observations of witness.

Re: Benjamin Lim Revealed Before Parliament To Be A Molester! No Wonder He Jumped!

he jumped before any fair trial can be given. what a loser.

Yeah, he should have stayed alive and exact revenge on the government.

Re: Why does WP MP allow Shamu to deflect the issue?

Singapore politics is pointless, the only thing left now is to pray for a long and hard recession to burn this country to the ground and bring karma to this soulless nation.

the girl complained to her father because Benjamin ended it too soon

Re: Why does WP MP allow Shamu to deflect the issue?

K. Sham didn't attack Dr Chee even though he was the only opposition to have demanded answers from the Minister.

As for WP, back to free parking lots for MOE teachers.
