Barisan socialis come back to challenge PAP

They were clear about LKY being a British stooge. They were suspicious of him before the elections in 1959. The British did everything for LKY to remain afloat. All that LKY had to do was to rely on his British masters, even when it came to wresting back the leadership of the PAP well before the 59 elections.

Even when Singapore was part of Malaysia, the British "rescued" their "favored son" from being arrested under the ISA!

The British helped LKY, the only Englishman east of Suez, all the way for his obedient service to the British Crown.

Oh, so cul-de-sac hatchet man is always helicoptered out and the tanks corner the resistance from behind to the cul-de-sac. Now I know why hatch man so confident. He is a snitch and dog.

Yupz, some old folks once told me during Dr Lee Siew Choh's time there're even riots against national service registrations. It was said that one of his son was even jailed, not too sure if it's for the riots or defying an enlistment order.

I was one of those who lived through these tumultuous times. As far as I can remember during the colonial era there were riots like the infamous Hock Lee Bus riots and protests/demonstrations when the British introduced National Service in 1954. But there were no riots when the PAP implemented NS in 1967. Furthermore, I can recall one of LSC's sons was fined in court for not registering for NS. I am not sure if he was jailed.

In those days all new male entrants to the Civil Service must do part-time NS, a scheme that was the brainchild of Pang Tee Pow, who was the Perm Sec for Defence. Even those who took correspondence courses from overseas institutions were not spared. Another irritating regulation was that before one could enrol with institutions of higher learning, he/she must obtain a Certificate of Entitlement (pardon me if the name is wrong) from the Ministry of Education. These measures were devised to stop students from involving in pro-left activities. As Charles Dickens wrote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.....:

It's a pity the noble ideologies of Communism and Socialism have been tainted by both sides of the Cold War.

Socialism definitely has a part to play in correcting the administrative and political flaws that Singapore is facing today. The measures that alternative parties have been trumpeting during their campaign are all in line with Socialist concepts of Transparency and Welfarism.

Socialism

Absolutely right. And it is the way to go. Record high GDP is of no use when society is unable to to take care of the less able and the unfortunate.

I've no wish to part away with half of my income to take care of the poor. Bleeding hearts here probably wouldn't mind. Solution? Let the free-market decide. If you socialists care so much for the poor, invite them home and clothe and feed them. No one has the right to stop you from doing so just as no one has the right to take away my hard earned wealth and play Robin Hood with it. I contend that there's nothing freer than the free-market. :)
