There will be only one winner if Sir Alex Ferguson decides his relationship with Wayne Rooney has reached point of no return at Manchester United

The wily Old Trafford boss has proved in his dealings with Beckham, Keane, Stam and company that he will not allow his aura of authority to be diminished by anyone

As the storm clouds gather over Old Trafford, surely even the most one-eyed Manchester United optimist no longer thinks that the marriage of Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson is an innocent, affectionate one. With growing evidence of a breakdown in the relationship, it is increasingly clear that the contract dispute of 15 months ago has left an indelible scar.

News broke on Twitter late on New Year's Eve (in a newspaper that Sir Alex has been known to brief in the past) that Rooney had been dropped for United’s shock defeat to Blackburn Rovers earlier that day after turning up for training in a less-than-mint condition. Recalled to the team that lost even more abysmally at Newcastle United on Wednesday, Rooney’s painful performance summed up that of his team. Electric either side of Christmas in the 5-0 trouncings of Fulham and Wigan Athletic, suddenly his demeanour had taken on the troubled, distracted look of early last season.

When Rooney was substituted and made only fingertip contact with his manager as he left the pitch, his face burned with frustration. Within a week, his form had plummeted. Had Sir Alex overplayed his hand by disciplining his star player for what had initially seemed a relatively minor offence? The immediate drop in the effectiveness of Rooney – and his team - could have perhaps been avoided had the Scot taken a less stringent line.

Yet this theory fails to take into account Sir Alex's mastery and experience of the intricacies of man-management. Had he failed to rap Rooney, Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans over the knuckles for their Boxing Day jaunt with their partners, the 70-year-old might have reckoned it would have been a victory for player power at the expense of his own authority. The impression Rooney gives is that he makes his own rules and deserves a longer leash than the rank-and-file. No longer is he the extravagantly gifted but raw teenager who benefitted from the wisdom, warmth and occasionally firm hand of his boss.

Dejected figure | Wayne Rooney burned with frustration after painful display on Wednesday

Yet Sir Alex’s aura depends on there being only one man operating the steering wheel. He has written the book, the screenplay and the film script on how to deal with big-name players who have begun to operate outside of their necessarily narrow jurisdiction. David Beckham, Roy Keane, Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy were all eased out of Old Trafford when Sir Alex thought their powers to be forces of good at the club had waned. Paul Scholes feared he might suffer the same fate after refusing to play in a League Cup tie but was given a stay of execution.

This brings us to the most fascinating element of what can only be characterised as chapter two of the Rooney-Ferguson breakdown. The manager gave a masterclass in psychology when Rooney thought his future would better lie elsewhere, chastising the player on TV, questioning the advice he was being given and reminding his audience that the club was more important than any player, however celebrated.

Rooney’s camp had plenty of reason to pop the champagne corks 48 hours later when United shattered their pay structure to give the striker what they clearly thought was a contract befitting the talisman of England’s biggest club and the national team.

"If Ferguson feels that the player has become more trouble than he is worth, a way will be found to end their relationship"

<tbody> </tbody>
Yet Sir Alex came out of the affair with his reputation enhanced and Rooney with his diminished in the eyes of supporters who feel that his celebrity has gone too far, the way Beckham’s did nearly a decade ago.The supporters do not bestow quite the affection on the player they once did, nor do they sing his name with the same gusto, certainly not compared to bona fide Old Trafford legends Keane and Eric Cantona.

It also took Rooney an awfully long time to repay the club’s faith. For all the majesty of his spectacular match-winning scissor-kick against Manchester City in February, it was not until he inspired a 4-2 comeback win at West Ham in April with an exquisite hat-trick that he recaptured the form of 2009-10, the season when he seemed destined to rub shoulders throughout his peak years with a tiny elite headed by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

As one of those who covered United’s Champions League semi-final cakewalk at Schalke in Gelsenkirchen in April, when Rooney spoke afterwards of his embarrassment at questioning the ambition of the club who went on to win a 19th league crown weeks later and reach their third final of Europe’s elite competition in four years, it is slightly surprising to be at a crossroads in his career again just over eight months later.

History tells us that there is only one Guv’nor at Old Trafford. In a battle of wills between star player and the most decorated manager of the modern era, there can only be one winner. Whether Rooney likes it or not, if Sir Alex feels, for reasons of commitment or effectiveness, that the player has become more trouble than he is worth, a way will be found, be it this month or in the summer, to end their relationship.
None of us should be surprised if the divorce papers are served soon.

Neil Warnock sacked as manager of QPR

Neil Warnock has been sacked as QPR manager following a run of nine matches without a win.

Assistant manager Mick Jones and first-team coach Keith Curle have also left the club.

Warnock had led QPR to the Championship title last season, with the club securing promotion on 88 points, and oversaw a number of high-profile transfer signings in the summer after Tony Fernandes took control of the club's ownership.

His side had also made a decent start to Premier League life, with the highlight being a 1-0 victory over London rivals Chelsea at Loftus Road in October.

But their form had taken a turn for the worse of late as a nine-match winless run left the club 17th in the table with 17 points from 20 matches with just one victory - that win over the Blues - coming in front of their own fans.

QPR Chairman Fernandes, said: "This decision has been made in the best interests of the club and I can assure everyone that this is not a decision that was made lightly.

"Sadly, our recent run of poor form has seen us slip alarmingly down the table and the Board felt it was the right time to make a change.

"Neil has acted with honesty, professionalism and integrity throughout his time at the club, and I would personally like to thank him for his significant contribution to QPR over the last 22 months.

"I genuinely wish him all the very best for the future and he will always be welcome back at Loftus Road."

Warnock's last match was on Saturday, where his side struck a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw away to League One side MK Dons in the FA Cup.

Warnock said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed, but having achieved so much, I leave the club with a great sense of pride.

"I have enjoyed my time here more than anywhere else and the QPR fans have been brilliant with me - they deserve success.

"My biggest regret is that the takeover didn't happen earlier, because that would have given me the opportunity to bring in the targets I'd pinpointed all last summer and probably given us a better chance to succeed in the Premier League.

"The board at QPR are hugely ambitious and I wish them every success for the future.

"I've been involved in the game a long time and I will be spending the immediate future with my family and friends before deciding my next career move."

Newcastle, Wigan, Aston Villa, Wolves, Blackburn, Fulham, Everton and Bolton are QPR's next eight opponents in the league - a run the new manager will see as a perfect chance to make a strong start with, but one Warnock will have been targeting to get his side back up the table.

Stunning Paul Scholes return provides a short-term fix for Manchester United but fails to hide bigger issues

The 37-year-old came out of retirement for Sunday's Manchester derby & will play until the end of the season - but comeback raises as many questions as it provides answers

“I knew it was the right time to happen. You can't go on forever. I know how my body has felt. You're at a top club with the best players and you just have to realise your legs can't do what you want them to do” - Paul Scholes, June 2011

Something made
Paul Scholes
knock on Sir Alex Ferguson’s door at the end of last week and announce that he had changed his mind. Maybe it was the way he had been training with the reserves in recent weeks, perhaps it was the sight of Rafael da Silva and Ji-Sung Park labouring in central midfield during Manchester United’s home defeat to Blackburn on New Year’s Eve.

Whatever the reason, the player nicknamed ‘Sat Nav’ by his team-mates decided to answer the club’s SOS for midfield reinforcements - a U-turn announced barely an hour before Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The news and consequent reaction of United fans - most delighted, some concerned by what the comeback represented - was drama derby day hardly needed, theatre incompatible with the 37-year-old’s naturally unassuming nature.

What was suited to Scholes’ outlook was the thrilling game that followed, a 3-2 win in which he played the final half-an-hour after replacing Nani as a 59th minute substitute to a hero’s reception from the 5700 United fans in the South Stand of the Etihad Stadium.

The man described by Wayne Rooney (and many others) as “definitely the best player I have played with” pulled on a United shirt 225 days after his last appearance for the club, in the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley.

With his No.18 now adorned by Ashley Young, Scholes took to the pitch wearing No.22 as he once again represented the only club he has known since he joined the Academy at the age of 14.

He's back | Scholes made his return from the bench in a thrilling FA Cup derby

"It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision," Ferguson said of Scholes’ reinstatement. "It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, especially so when they do it early.”

Adding that Scholes was in “great shape” and insisting there were “no negatives” to the deal, Ferguson looked delighted to have an extra man in a squad severely depleted by injuries to key players.

Yet while his experience and technical ability might initially be seen as a no-brainer for United, it also raises questions about the state of the Ferguson’s squad, not to mention the funds available to compete with City’s petrodollars.

For all the talk about United’s young squad, it says little for Academy stars such as Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison that the club has resorted to recalling a man who hadn’t played a competitive fixture for seven months, who was thought to have waved his final goodbye to Old Trafford following his testimonial in August. Pogba, in particular, is considering his future at the club and the 18-year-old must surely be wondering whether he will ever get his chance to shine given the weakness of United’s current midfield.

As a short-term fix, Scholes offers a useful option. He is not, however, the man to help United achieve their stated aim of supplanting Barcelona as Europe’s premier team, never mind the immediate requirement to compete with City for this season’s Premier League crown.

What United really want is a player close to the level Scholes was reaching a decade ago. But then again, who doesn't? In his press conference on Friday morning, Ferguson conceded for the first time that United need new signings as he responded to calls from supporters for quality midfielders who can dictate games. “What can you get in January? The players we'd like we can't get,” Ferguson said. “If the alternative is to sign a second-rate player, we don't want to do that.”

A central midfielder will remain the top priority in the summer, with the likes of Tottenham’s Luka Modric high in the club’s thoughts as they search for a top class, long-term replacement to Scholes - something Ferguson failed to do last summer when United missed out on Wesley Sneijder.

United’s attempts to land Sneijder failed over money and Scholes’ comeback will once again raise issues over just what funding is available to improve the squad. Ferguson claims the cash is there if he needs it, but supporters are justified in fearing the Glazers - who have drained so much money out of the club - won’t back their manager in the transfer market.

Scholes’ return will be judged on his performances, the measure by which he has always appraised himself. Ten league titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups and two League Cups - not to mention 66 England caps - suggest he didn’t do too badly the first time around.

He will only be returning because he feels he still has something to offer, based on his performances on the training ground and view from the stands. The carrot-topped genius doesn’t do egotism; he’s always been considered a throwback to the good old days.

He has never had an agent and throughout his career made a point of shunning the media spotlight and the trappings of fame. For Scholes it has always been about what you do on the pitch: control, passing and shooting. It’s a simple game.

He did that to some effect on Sunday, although his glorious comeback got off to an alarming start when he conceded possession for City to score four minutes after his introduction. It did little to ease fears that Scholes might struggle to rediscover the pace of top-flight football, a question that surely can’t be answered after just 31 minutes of action.

But while he seemed to be breathing rather heavily in the final minutes, Scholes did play an important role as United saw the game out in unlikely circumstances to book a fourth round clash against Liverpool, their other great rivals.

Scholes found the rhythm of the game and the 71 passes he made after coming on - 97 per cent which were completed - were more than any City player attempted in the entire game.
For a moment, the United fans sensed a fairytale moment when he tested City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon from 20 yards, but in general he was happy to sit deep and play short, simple passes to relieve the pressure.

Scholes, having admitted his legs have gone, has taken a calculated gamble by returning to the United ranks until May. A derby day victory will leave him satisfied he made the right decision - but will it be enough as United tackle more underlying issues?

Chelsea's Andre Villas-Boas looking to sign up to two players in January

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas says he could sign up to two players in the January transfer window.

The Blues look set to complete a deal for Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill after agreeing a fee with the club, while they have also been linked with moves for Olympique de Marseille defender Cesar Azpilicueta and Juventus winger Milos Krasic.

Speaking at the draw for the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, Villas-Boas said: "Apart from a central defender, we might get one more player in but we're not sure yet.

"It's always difficult. The top talent is normally cup-tied in the Champions League or in different domestic competitions and it's difficult for the selling club to make players available. "It's normal that you struggle in the transfer market. "Normally it's a market where you overpay a lot and that's what we don't want to do now. "That's why we have set out not to do a lot in the transfer window."

The Chelsea boss also lent his support to Neil Warnock, who was sacked by QPR on Sunday.
QPR will face the Blues in the next round of the FA Cup if they win their replay against MK Dons, and Villas-Boas believes the club's former manager did a good job at Loftus Road.

He said: "It's always sad news. The Barclays Premier League is always intense and very media-hyped, pressure is all over the place.
"You are expected to get results and you also need people to trust in you when you take a challenge of that dimension in your hands. "Neil did a fantastic job with QPR bringing them up to the Premier League. "Just the fact that we lose a manager shows there is a high demand for us to get results and it's ever-present in the Premier League."

Neymar - Santos
Santos forward Neymar has been announced as the winner of the 2011 Fifa Puskas Award for the best goal of the year.

Neymar was rewarded for his stunning solo strike during Santos' 5-4 defeat against Flamengo in the Brasileirao in July. The 19-year-old moved past a string of opponents before calmly sending the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Brazil international, who beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney for the honour, was presented the award by Real Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez.

Speaking on the special occasion, Neymar said: "I am really happy to be at this ceremony, to win this award against two great players, of whom I am a fan.

"I want to thank God for this and I would like to wish everyone a good ceremony."

Neymar, who has a contract with Santos until 2015, has committed his club future to the Copa Libertadores holders until the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

154814hp2.jpg

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs has been denied the chance to take over as Wales manager after Sir Alex Ferguson blocked an enquiry, according to The Mirror.

Giggs, 38, has been linked with coaching roles for his country for some time and has been tipped to become manager following the death of Gary Speed in December.
However, Sir Alex has apparently rebuffed the Football Association of Wales' enquiries, even though they were prepared to allow Giggs to continue playing for the Old Trafford club and allow him to manage the country in a part-time role.

A 'Wales insider' told the newspaper that Giggs was seen as a natural successor to Speed but their enquiries to United were "immediately rejected" by the veteran Scottish manager.

Giggs picked up over 60 caps for his country in an international career spanning 16 years until he retired in 2007 to prolong his playing days with United.

The report claims former Fulham boss Chris Coleman is now in pole position for the vacant role.

Wales took their time in beginning their search for a replacement out of respect for Speed's memory but are now actively searching for their next manager.

David Silva to be rewarded for fine form with bumper pay rise at Manchester City – report

Manchester City
playmaker David Silva is to be given a bumper new contract as reward for his stellar start to the season, according to The Sun.

The World Cup winner has earned plaudits for his performances at the heart of City's midfield this term, with his league-best 10 assists helping the club to the top of the table.

Silva, who joined from Valencia in 2010 for £24 (€29) million, still has two years remaining on his existing deal and City are thought to want to extend his contract by a further two years, with a pay package that would put him in the same bracket as top earners Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero.
The 26-year-old reportedly earns around £150,000, while Toure is estimated to be on in excess of £200,000-a-week at the Etihad Stadium.

In October, Silva said he hopes to stay with the Blues for a long time amid reports that Barcelona and Real Madrid were monitoring his situation.

Silva said: "City believed in me and I'm very well here.

"Real Madrid and Barcelona are definitely two great clubs but I hope to stay in Manchester for many years."

With the Milan derby coming up on Sunday, the Giuseppe Meazza enemies are locking horns off the pitch as well, as it remains to be seen whether Moratti or Adriano Galliani will win the tug-of-war for the Argentina international.

David Silva
missed training with a badly damaged ankle on Tuesday and is a big doubt for Manchester City's League Cup semi-final first-leg showdown against Liverpool.

But it is understood that strikers Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko have both been passed fit for the clash at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The pair were doubtful with ankle and knee injuries respectively but sources have told Goal.com that they will be available for the mouthwatering encounter against Kenny Dalglish's team.

Manager Roberto Mancini is considering another run-out for Owen Hargreaves while rookie Abdul Razak is set to be named among the substitutes.

Silva, who has been in outstanding form for City this season, was withdrawn at half-time during their 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Scans showed that the playmaker suffered heavy bruising around his ankle and he is regarded as a major doubt for the Liverpool match after sitting out the team's training session on Tuesday, a day before the game.

City do not yet know the full extent of the damage but the fear is that his absence could be a lengthy one and he will be on the sidelines for a few weeks.

The return of Balotelli, who has been out since the Boxing Day draw at West Brom, and Dzeko, who did not figure against United, is a relief to Mancini as his squad faces an intense schedule over the coming weeks, including the two-legged tie against Liverpool.

Mancini has been impressed with Hargreaves in training and is considering starting with the midfielder, even though Gareth Barry is available again after serving a one-match suspension.
