Mancini open to January arrivals

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini may consider making new signings this month, but only if there are significant departures first.

Considerable speculation inevitably accompanies wealthy City into any transfer window but this time the main movements could be outgoing. City are looking to offload absent striker Carlos Tevez while defenders Nedum Onuoha and Wayne Bridge, both surplus to requirements, are also available. The club have already held negotiations with AC Milan about Tevez but have not yet reached an agreement as their hope is for an immediate sale while the Italians want to loan the player first. Mancini believes a deal could be done quickly if Milan agree to their terms but he says other clubs are also interested.

The Italian said: "We need to sell three or four players and with Carlos we could close (a deal) with a club in the next three or four days, and also possibly Wayne. Then maybe we can do something. "We hope for us and for Carlos we can do a deal. There are two or three teams in Italy, a team in France, and another team involved - I hope for him he can start to play football. "We could maybe bring someone in, but we need to sell."

The absence of Tevez, City's top scorer for the past two seasons, for much of the campaign has left the club a striker down but Mancini is not necessarily looking for a direct replacement. Mancini feels he has enough firepower and is more likely to target a midfielder with key man Yaya Toure soon to depart for a lengthy spell on international duty.

Mancini said: "We have three strikers, plus Samir (Nasri), David (Silva) and Adam Johnson. Maybe we need one midfielder if we can do it." City have been linked with Roma star Daniele De Rossi but Mancini does not know if a deal for his fellow Italian is feasible. He said: "De Rossi is a top player, like Yaya, but he plays for Roma, a top team, and he was born there. I don't know if he will leave."

City hope to have striker Mario Balotelli and midfielder Nasri back for Sunday's eagerly-anticipated FA Cup third round clash against Manchester United. Both pulled out of the Barclays Premier League leaders' win over Liverpool in midweek through illness. Mancini said: "Samir was ill, Mario the same. I hope that they will be okay for the game against United. "They trained with us in the morning but then were ill."

David de Gea or Anders Lindegaard?

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has pleaded with manager Sir Alex Ferguson to stick with a regular goalkeeper or risk a trophyless season.

Bosnich claims Ferguson must decide which of his goalkeepers - either David de Gea or Anders Lindegaard - is the club's first choice keeper to avoid a repeat of the defensive lapses the team is currently experiencing.
De Gea arrived from Atletico Madrid in the summer for around £19million but has struggled to establish himself as United's undisputed number one and was culpable in their 3-2 defeat to Blackburn at Old Trafford on New Year's Eve.

On the other hand, Lindegaard has looked fairly solid in his limited starts for the Red Devils but was involved in United's 3-0 loss at Newcastle on Wednesday which featured a bad mistake from defender Phil Jones who headed Tim Krul's deep free-kick into his own net in the final minute of normal time. "Manchester City are looking like they could easily run away with the league," Bosnich told talkSPORT.

"He [Sir Alex Ferguson] needs to make a decision and stick with one, you couldn't really fault Lindegaard against Newcastle but that misunderstanding with Phil Jones was because they haven't played together, week in and week out. "I understand you have to rotate players but in the key positions, and being a goalkeeper is a really key position, that understanding must be second nature and that was the result of the third goal."

"It does take a little bit of time to get used to and in the Premier League you don't have that sort of time.
"He's got to decide who he's going to stick with, whether it's De Gea or Lindegaard, regardless of how much money he's spent on De Gea if Man United are going to win any trophies."

United are aiming to avoid losing three successive games for the first time in almost 11 years when they play at Manchester City on Sunday in the FA Cup. United have not suffered three defeats in a row since the last three games of the 2000/01 campaign, when the Premier League title had already been won.

Fergie: Noisy neighbours won't go away

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester United's fans they will have to get used to scrapping for honours with their "noisy neighbours".

Ferguson famously used that description to assess Manchester City two years ago, at the start of their £1billion quest to reach the top. The summit is now in reach, certainly in England given City are three points clear of United in the Barclays Premier League and are favourites to advance from an eagerly-anticipated FA Cup third round tie at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

It is the third time the two clubs have met in cup combat in the past three seasons. United emerged triumphant in a thrilling two-legged Carling Cup semi-final in 2010, only for City to gain revenge at the same stage of the FA Cup last season. "The way we, and our supporters, should look at it is that we may as well get used to it because they are not going to go away," the United boss told Inside United.

"We played them in a semi-final last year and the year before, we're both in the Europa League this year and now we are facing them in the FA Cup. "So we have to get used to the fact that City are going to be challenging for competitions along with us. "There's every chance we're going to meet at some point - maybe not every year but on average it's going to be pretty regular.

"It's a hard FA Cup draw for us, but it will be hard for them too." United will be attempting to avoid equalling an unwanted 11-year-old record. Not since the end of the 2000-01 campaign, when the Premier League had already been won, have Manchester United lost three successive games. Yet that is the fate that awaits at City if Ferguson cannot cajole a better performance out of his injury-hit team than they produced at Newcastle on Wednesday.

"It is obviously a big game against City in the FA Cup," said Ryan Giggs. "The atmosphere will be good, we'll take a load of fans there and hopefully we can get back to winning ways." Ferguson's continued insistence he does not require at least one addition to his squad during this month's transfer window is baffling considering how tough United are finding things at present.

And victory this weekend against opponents who recorded a scarcely believable 6-1 win at Old Trafford on their last meeting and have now opened up a three-point lead in the Premier League following their dismantling of Liverpool on Tuesday, will be extremely tough.

Mancini: We need more players

Roberto Mancini is desperate to bring in another player during this month's transfer window in order to bolster Manchester City's title challenge.

Mancini has raised the possibility of not even being able to name a full complement of substitutes for Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie with Manchester United. It is a rather bizarre position for the world's wealthiest club to find themselves in but has been arrived at following the refusal of Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui to allow Yaya and Kolo Toure to delay their departure for preparations ahead of the African Nations Cup.

That has compounded the difficulties caused by Gareth Barry's suspension and injuries to Mario Balotelli, Owen Hargreaves and, possibly, Samir Nasri. It merely strengthens Mancini's fears he simply does not have the resources to be certain City will complete their championship quest without a major mishap.

"If we don't have the players it's tough for us," said the City boss. "We are not United. We don't have 19 championships. "United and Chelsea have won trophies for many years. So they are quiet. They understand that they can play without pressure. For us it's different. "This could be the first championship for many years and we need to do everything we can to win it."

By doing everything, Mancini means not letting the strength of his squad be reduced significantly. The problem for City's owners is not finding the cash, it is proving to UEFA they are serious about meeting the strict Financial Fair Play regulations that began this season and which the Blues are virtually certain to fail given the vast scale of their losses. Only by reducing them dramatically will City's hierarchy hope to avoid punishment, which means Mancini may have to sell before be can buy.

To that end, the departure of Carlos Tevez cannot come soon enough, although any movement with AC Milan and Inter, who have also expressed an interest, is proving slow.
"It's better that we sell first," said Mancini. "Maybe then we can then take in other players. "I said two months ago that we could have a big problem in January because we have to play big games without Yaya."
Indeed, Toure could miss up to five Premier League games, in addition to Sunday's FA Cup tie, the fourth round should City get through and the two-legged Carling Cup semi-final with Liverpool. However, Mancini is also acutely aware that with Tevez remaining in Argentina, City have effectively been operating one striker down for the past three months.

"If we have strikers injured then we need to buy another," said Mancini. "Because (Edin) Dzeko has a problem in his knee, at the moment I have one striker and two midfielders." Instead of facing Sir Alex Ferguson's men, the Tours will be flying from Paris, where they are required for a team meeting on Saturday, to Abu Dhabi for a two-week training camp ahead of the tournament, jointly held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

And evidently, Mancini has no faith in some of the back-up players outside his senior squad because he is contemplating the possibility of only naming six substitutes. "For Sunday we have 17 players," he said. "I don't think we will have 18. "Gareth is suspended, Mario is injured. Samir was better yesterday but I don't know."

The strange case of Owen Hargreaves offers little cause for optimism either as two starts in the Carling Cup and a substitute appearance in the Premier League win over Aston Villa have not given way to a more consistent presence in the City squad. "Owen has worked with the team in the last two weeks without a problem," said Mancini.

"But it is clear that he is not Yaya at this moment. "He needs to play and work. I hope he can be ready to play one game but it depends on him." It leaves Mancini with just James Milner and Nigel de Jong available to face United from his pool of orthodox midfielders, although that could be supplemented by Pablo Zabaleta, or even Nasri should the former Arsenal man recover in time.

City lose Toures to Ivory Coast call-up

5 January 2012

12427315610.jpg

Ivory Coast have rejected Manchester City’s appeal for Kolo and Yaya Toure to delay joining up with the national squad. The pair are due to report in Paris on Saturday ahead of the African Cup of Nations, which begins in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea on January 21.

Roberto Mancini was hoping to hang on to the pair for a few extra days to they would be available for City's FA Cup tie against cross-town rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
But Ivory Coast manager Francois Zahoui has insisted all players must report for the national team on January 7, meaning City will be without two key first-team players for the derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.

"Clubs know the rules," Zahoui told BBC Africa. "I'm expecting them (the Toures) for the FIFA deadline."
"The national team in Ivory Coast is led by people who are well educated and I was surprised that people in England think that we don't know the FIFA rules about dates.""Here, when we call-up the players, they are obliged to turn up at the date indicated by FIFA."

"So when we call them up we know that the clubs need to let them go."
"I said to the managers, 'Be careful because there's a great expectation here and we need our cohesion and we have our 10 days together and we need a team spirit at our training camp'."

"Arsene Wenger was my coach (at Nancy in France) so we have a close, respectful relationship. But even with him I said that the head of the Ivorian federation won't mess about. Don't turn this into a stand-off."
"So our call-up day is January 7. I hope and pray they respect this date and that there's not a conflict between clubs and the federation."

Ivory Coast have been grouped with Sudan, Angola and Burkina Faso for the African Cup of Nations.

Inter not interested in Sneijder sale

6 January 2012

12427315810.jpg

Inter sporting director Marco Branca has rejected rumours that his side are locked in talks with Manchester City regarding Wesley Sneijder.British sources had claimed that Inter were willing to use the Dutchman as makeweight in a deal for Carlos Tevez, who is desperate to find a new club before the end of the transfer window.

"There were no discussions whatsoever regarding Wesley Sneijder today during our meeting in London with representatives of Manchester City," Branca told Inter's website.
AC Milan seem to be leading the race to sign Tevez, but Italian sources have claimed that Inter are also vying for the Argentine's services.

However, with City refusing to accept loan offers for the striker, Inter are reportedly pessimistic about their chances to land the 27-year-old.
Questioned about his future earlier on Thursday, Sneijder suggested he was '90 per cent' certain of staying with the Serie A giants but refused to rule out a January exit, with Manchester United believed to be interested in the midfielder.

The Netherlands international, who joined Inter from Real Madrid in 2009, has a contract with the Serie A side until 2015.

Report: Scholes could return to United

Paul Scholes is ready to come out of retirement to help solve Manchester United's problems, according to reports in the UK.

The 37-year-old retired at the end of last season after helping United to their 19th league title last season.

But according to The Sun newspaper, Scholes could make a sensational return to United - just six months after hanging up his boots.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have been struggling for inspiration and creativity in midfield this season and are in a mini crisis after two back-to-back defeats in the league.

Scholes, who currently trains with the United reserves as well as coaches them, shares the concern with his side's worrying form of late.

And the United legend is reportedly willing to answer the call should Ferguson requires his help.

Ferguson has previously insisted that Scholes had another season in him - like Ryan Giggs - but could not convince the midfielder to extend his stay.

The Scot could well get his wish now.

Ferguson warning to Man City

Sir Alex Ferguson is certain FA Cup foes Manchester City will be acutely aware of the threat his side poses.

After successive defeats to Blackburn and Newcastle, Ferguson is again on the back foot. Three points adrift of City in the Premier League title race, United head to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday looking to avoid suffering a third loss on the trot for the first time since 2001.

He does so with a squad badly depleted by injury and convinced the players he could bring in to bolster it are not of the right quality to enhance United long-term.
Yet, despite the pessimism, Ferguson also knows his players carry a history of fighting successfully against the odds. More importantly, the Scot is aware his opponents know it too.

"Manchester City have a strong, experienced squad," said Ferguson. "It is not unexpected where they are at the moment. "But they also know we are right behind them." It leaves Ferguson convinced only Tottenham could gatecrash the Manchester duopoly in the Premier League, the United boss admitting his own side have scrapped exceptionally hard to maintain an interest. "In some respects, we can say well done to still be there," he said. "And we are still there.

A lot is going to happen between now and the end of the season but I can't see anyone outside the three top teams winning the league.
"Arsenal and Chelsea need all three teams to collapse and I don't think that will happen." Yet those words merely heighten the feeling amongst United fans that their club could just do with one or two more players during the current transfer window to make the difference between winning trophies and ending up as also-rans.

Frank Lampard's name has now emerged and whilst it would be a more obvious move if Ferguson tried to talk Paul Scholes out of retirement for the remainder of the campaign, it was interesting that, in a defence of his recruitment policy, the United manager did not reject the theory of signing Chelsea's long-serving midfielder, just the notion of Andre Villas-Boas being willing to do a deal.

"You are not going to tell me Chelsea would sell Frank Lampard to Manchester United in January. Do you really believe that?" said Ferguson. "There is no foundation to that. Chelsea are like us. They want to do something. The second half of the season is going to be important to them. "If they want to try and win the league they will need to have all their best players."

The same could be said of many potential targets, which is why he believes it is better to trust the players at his disposal, even though defeat in Sunday's FA Cup tie would pile even more pressure on the men from Old Trafford.

"The thing is, what can you get in January?" he said. "I have said this all the time. The players who are available that we would like, we won't get. "What do you do? Do you take a second rate player? No, of course you don't. "The injury situation has accelerated a lot of our fans into saying we will have to get someone. "I would rather stick with the ones I have got than bring someone in who ends up not having a game anyway because they are not good enough."

So, with Chris Smalling still ruled out due to a nasty bout of tonsillitis, Ferguson will rely on the players who failed at Newcastle on Wednesday to re-establish credibility after the 6-1 humiliation when they last faced City, at Old Trafford in October. Not that Ferguson wanted to discuss that miserable day.

"I won't be mentioning it," he said. "We have enough experienced players in the squad to cope with a really difficult tie. I always say I would take anyone in a home draw. The advantage is with Manchester City in that respect. "But it is a cup tie. It is a local derby and anything can happen in these games."
