Teenage Pereira to join United

7 November 2011

PSV wonderkid Andreas Pereira has confirmed he has agreed a deal to join Manchester United in January.

Pereira, born in Brazil but raised in Belgium, is rated as one of the most talented players of his age in Europe, and chose United over a host of other interested clubs.

The 15-year-old midfielder revealed he decided on a move to Old Trafford after meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson, and said he is delighted to be given a chance to play for his 'dream club'.

"I knew that PSV had given me my chance, but Manchester United is obviously a great club," he told VoetbalPrimeur.

"Other British clubs were interested. I thought about it, but Manchester United is a dream club for me."
"I have been a few times to Manchester United to have a look.

I got a tour and spoke with Sir Alex Ferguson. Being a 15-year-old and being able to talk with him is great."

Police investigate Ferdinand death threats

7 November 2011

12427284150.jpg

QPR's Anton Ferdinand is the target of a death threat issued following claims that he was racially abused by John Terry.

The 26-year-old defender is receiving police advice following a letter delivered by hand to QPR's Loftus Road ground last Friday.

The letter was reportedly so graphic that police told Ferdinand and other close relatives to take immediate precautions, and it is believed that some family members have installed panic alarms.

A police spokesman said: "We confirm we are investigating an allegation of malicious communication."
The claims of racial abuse relate to the England captain's comments towards the QPR defender during Chelsea's 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road on October 23.

TV footage appeared to show Terry using a racial slur towards Ferdinand. However, the Chelsea skipper maintains he was trying to clarify whether his opponent thought he had abused him.

Police are investigating the claims, while the FA have received a statement from Anton, brother of Terry's fellow England defender Rio Ferdinand, along with previously unseen footage from Sky Sports.

The FA will now attempt to establish what happened and whether any action should be taken against Terry.

Should Berba stay or should he go?

So it has emerged that Galatasaray are considering a January move for Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov. We ask whether it's time for the Bulgarian to go.
By Marcus Chhan

The Turkish giants are not the first to express an interest in the striker who cost United a reported £30.75million in September 2008. French Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain are also known to be keen admirers and the clock on his future at Old Trafford is certainly ticking, his current deal expires at the end of the season.

With the winter transfer window approaching, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has to decide very quickly whether he wants to keep the Bulgarian around. When he arrived at Old Trafford a little more than three seasons ago, there was hope he would be the ‘new Cantona', a player with bags of ability and the persona to match.

For all his classy touches and moments of magic we have seen, it is fair to say Berbatov has failed to live up to even his own expectations of what his United career should have been. In his first season under Ferguson, United won the Barclays Premier League title and reached the UEFA Champions League final but his contribution was not brilliant, with just 14 goals.

"In my first year I was disappointed in myself. I need to say that," Berbatov told a British newspaper early into his second season at the club.
"It was a big pressure for me and maybe I failed myself. I think I wanted to prove myself to these supporters.
"You must remember, they are used to Best, Charlton, Cantona. I am just Dimitar.
"I got a number of assists, but I must score more goals."

His second season was even more frustrating. Ferguson opted to use Wayne Rooney as the focal point of his attack and Berbatov only managed 12 goals that term. In the 2010/11 season, Berbatov scored 20 league goals as Manchester United claimed a record 19th league title - he finished joint top with Manchester City's Carlos Tevez in the running for the Golden Boot award.

A much better return from the Bulgarian but his harshest critics will point out that the bulk of his goals came in pockets and were not spread out over the season.
It seems as though Berbatov will forever be a figure of underachievement, even if he scores five-goals against Blackburn Rovers, even after an unforgettable overhead kick en route to a hat-trick against Liverpool. Not to mention vital late winners against Blackpool and Bolton.

This is because Berbatov's problem is not a question of whether he is good enough to play for Manchester United; you would be hard pressed to find a more technically gifted player in the Barclays Premier League at the moment. The real source of frustration and consternation amongst the United faithful is that the languid forward's on-the-ball play almost always slows the team's momentum down at the wrong moments and on the wrong parts of the pitch.

The fact that he is expendable is something Ferguson has all but admitted to by opting to no longer use the striker in the big games against high caliber opposition - including dropping him from the United squad which faced mighty Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of last season. Interestingly, Berbatov has not scored against a team United would call rivals since netting in the 3-0 win against Chelsea in January 2009.

552990_10_preview.jpg

One of the reasons for this has been the remarkable emergence of Javier Hernandez as a reliable partner for Wayne Rooney up top. The Mexican striker is a polar opposite to Berbatov, and enjoys playing off the last defender - he has yet to score for United from outside the box - and has already racked up 24 goals in just over a season at Old Trafford.

Team-mate Danny Welbeck's good start to the current campaign has pushed Berbatov further down the pecking order. The Bulgarian was last seen starting for United in games against mighty Aldershot and Otelul Galati.

An offer Fergie can't refuse?

Considering Berbatov's age along with the expected emergence of youngster like Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf coming up the ranks, Ferguson should be tempted to sell should an attractive bid come in.

United worked out that last summer that Berbatov's value was around £15million which would make his value around half of that come the January transfer window. Despite his diminishing role at Manchester United, there will be plenty of suitors interested in Berbatov's signature (bigger clubs than PSG or Galatasaray).

556968_10_preview.jpg

After all, we are still talking about the Barclays Premier League's joint-top scorer from last season. Would Ferguson really turn down an inflated bid for a player who, let's face it, is at best his third choice striker (fourth best if you rate Michael Owen higher) Actually, he might.

An ace up his sleeve

We were reminded this weekend that Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge of Manchester United for 25 years. Endless tributes and stories about what made this man one of the greatest managers of all time were rammed down our throats. But it was all justified.

This is a manager who has overseen the construction of five or six United sides during his time and the trophies have kept coming regardless of whether the team's lynchpin was Cantona or Rooney.

Selling Berbatov at an inflated price would be the conventional way to go but perhaps Ferguson has a shrewder plan in place. The Scot is also known for advancing his profession in England's top flight by introducing the idea of a squad rotation system which is where Berbatov firmly figures for the club at present.

650777_10_preview.jpg

If Berbatov were to go, it would leave United short of strikers with real Champions League experience and for that reason alone Ferguson may decide to let the Bulgarian's contract run until the end of the season before deciding whether to offer the striker a new deal.

By all accounts, the canny coach continues to have a good relationship with Berbatov while the player himself only a week ago spoke of his love and his family's love of life in Manchester.

Whatever the case, the United manager knows he has a major decision to make on the 30-yeard-old - and at the end of the day it will boil down to two simple things: Should Berba stay or go? The wise move would be let him go but second guessing someone as experienced and as crafty as Ferguson can be a dangerous thing to do.

Berba headed for Galatasaray?

Galatasaray president Unal Aysal has stated that Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is one of the players they are looking to bring to the club.

The Bulgarian frontman's contract at Old Trafford expires in the coming summer, leading to heavy speculation that his tenure with the English champions will come to an end soon. The Turkish club are looking for more reinforcements in the goalscoring department after Sercan Yildirim, who joined the club in September, failed to impress.

The club president told Hurriyet: "Yes, we're thinking of forwards, but now is far too early. We're not just looking at Berbatov: we're interested in a number of players. "We can only get in contact and decide at the end of December, when the time comes. We have four or five players players in mind.
"But we can't say that we want to buy any player because we have not decided yet." Galatasaray are currently third in the Turkish Super Lig, but they have failed to impress in the past weekend after being held to a 0-0 draw by Mersin Idman Yurdu.

Klinsmann inspired by boss Wenger

United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann has revealed he draws his inspiration from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Klinsmann played for Wenger for two seasons when the Frenchman was manager of Monaco back in 1992. He admits the experience has proven invaluable now that his own career has progressed from the days of him being a top striker into his present day duties on the touchline.

"I had a blast when I played for Monaco," Klinsmann was quoted as saying by the Arsenal website. "I had two fantastic years with Arsene Wenger. We had a tremendous run in the Champions League when Arsene led us to the semi finals.
"I learnt a lot from him, especially now for my coaching career. "He was an inspiration and I took a lot of what he taught me."

Klinsmann returns to France next week as his USA team takes on Les Bleus in a friendly at the Stade de France.
"[I loved] experiencing the style of football in France 20 years ago... a very technical and fast pace game. I loved the technical approach of it. It was a formidable experience and I will never forget it," he said.

"I am hoping that Arsene will come to the game on Friday and that he will come for a coffee in our hotel before. "I got in touch the other day with the Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis, who used to be the vice-president of the MLS. So it's a small world." Klinsmann left Monaco to join Tottenham in 1994. He is also formerly the manager of the German national team.

Lampard: Chelsea ready to win ugly

Frank Lampard is adamant that Chelsea are ready to win matches by any means necessary, even if it means not playing attractive football.

Following back-to-back Barclays Premier League defeats to QPR and Arsenal, Chelsea finally got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Blackburn, which was by and large a scrappy affair. However, Lampard insists earning the three points is all that matters to the Blues, and would gladly take a repeat of Saturday's performances in any other match.

"The competition at the top is so fierce you can't afford to lose too many points," Lampard said. "We knew after two defeats that this was a must-win game in terms of keeping up with the leading gang, so it was big.

"It wasn't pretty but wins like this mean as much as the four or five-nils when we play beautiful football. "We don't mind winning ugly. With Chelsea already nine points behind table-topping Manchester City, many have suggested the Blues are unlikely to emerge triumphant in this season's Premier League title race.

Nonetheless, Lampard believes last season's revival shows Chelsea are capable of mounting a late charge, although he admits his side cannot afford to fall any further behind. "Last season we climbed back into contention after being 15 points behind, but you have to look at how well other teams are doing, particularly City.

"Experience tells us there's still a long way to go, but we don't want to give ourselves too much of a mountain to climb." Chelsea are next in action on November 20 when they take on Liverpool in an eagerly-anticipated encounter.

Toure: City's seconds could finish top four

Yaya Toure says Manchester City's second-string would challenge for a Champions League place.

The Ivory Coast star has been in brilliant form in recent weeks, with City also in commanding mood; they sit on top of the Premier League, unbeaten and five points clear. And Toure now says that City are equipped to take English football by storm because they have such strength in depth.

"We have more than one team now - we have got two teams," he insisted. "If you see the team that beat Wolves 5-2 in the Carling Cup, people said it was the second team. "For me, it is not the second team because everybody is good enough to play.

"The team that played against Wolves in the league at home won 3-1, but it was difficult. We have got two teams now that can both play in the Champions League. "We have got a fantastic squad and everybody is improving. For me it is amazing. "I came here because I wanted to make history. I want to be part of history at this club.

"For me it's the most important thing. We try not to think about going unbeaten, because the Premier League's not easy and other teams will try to beat us. "We have tough, tough games and coming up in a couple of weeks we have Liverpool, Newcastle at home, Arsenal and after that we play Chelsea.

"It will be very difficult but we hope we'll continue unbeaten." Despite City's dominance, Toure insisted that they were still some way short of his former club Barcelona. "Honestly I think we are far away. Barcelona are an amazing club with a fantastic squad," he said.

"I think most of the best players in the world are already there - Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, Dani Alves. "They are a fantastic squad. To become like them, we have to work hard and we have to win some trophies. We will continue to work hard to become like them."

Chelsea eye raid for Barca youngsters

Chelsea are eager to have a share of Barcelona's wave of talented youngsters.

The Blues have already captured Oriol Romeu from the Catalan giants this summer and the 20-year-old has impressed in the six appearances handed to him so far.

And according to The Daily Mirror, the North London club are not yet done with their raid on the Camp Nou and are interested in prising four youngsters to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo has earmarked 19-year-old midfielder Sergio Roberto as his top target.

Blues' Spanish scout Vicente Fernandez has also pin-pointed youngsters Martin Montoya, Marc Bartra and Rafa Alcantar as potential signings.

Meanwhile, the English giants are not only looking at Barcelona, but Real Madrid as well.

They are reportedly leading the race to sign 16-year-old striker Jose Pozo.

Wenger piles pressure on title-chasing City

8 November 2011

12427284590.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Manchester City could have the Premier League title within their grasp come Christmas.

City currently sit five points clear at the top of the table, ahead of local rivals Manchester United and with a healthy goal difference to boot.

Wenger believes the Etihad Stadium outfit have bolstered their position with impressive away performances, and says Roberto Mancini may have one hand on the Premier League by the end of the year.

"Man City had some impressive away results, especially at Tottenham and Manchester United," Wenger said.
"The potential is there, but we will see on a longer period. If they are still there with that difference in December, then you can say it'll be difficult to catch them."

However, the Frenchman warns that while no team is unbeatable, the FA Cup holders do possess the stars to carry them through to the end of the season.

"No team has no vulnerability in our league or any other league," said Wenger. "Man City have quality. They can score goals and be efficient. They are the ones to catch."

On his own team's chances of domestic glory, Wenger said a few more victories might put them back in the chase.

"It's too early to say we can still win the league," he said.
"But if we win a few more games, why not?"

Kuszczak cries foul over Ferguson treatment

8 November 2011

12427284680.jpg

Tomasz Kuszczak feels he is being treated like 'a slave' by Manchester United and has hit out at the club for not allowing him to leave.

The Polish goalkeeper has dropped in the pecking order behind David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, and wants to leave in order to aid his chances of representing his country at Euro 2012.

He claims he had the chance to join Leeds on a temporary basis but Manchester United rejected the offer, leading Kuszczak to believe that Sir Alex Ferguson does not care about the shot-stopper's progress.

He told reporters: "I've become a slave to Manchester."
"I've talked to Sir Alex lately, I asked him to let me leave the club before the January transfer window. I told him I want to get back into the national team, because Euro 2012 is just around the corner, but it seems he doesn't care."

"The possibility of two months' loan to Leeds came two weeks later. The club blocked it. It was a glimmer of hope for me. It would have reminded the Poland manager about me."

"Do they do it maliciously? I'm sad they behave like that. I'm frustrated but I don't want to slander or criticise Ferguson. It's not my style. I have respect for him because, for me, he's a great manager but I hope he will let me go in January."

Tevez accepts misconduct fine

9 November 2011

12427284970.jpg

Carlos Tevez will not appeal Manchester City's two-week fine for misconduct after he refused to warm up during a match at Bayern Munich.

Tevez, 27, had been given a four-week fine by the club, but it was downgraded to two weeks after the Professional Footballers’ Association refused to sanction the original penalty.

While City also sought to prove the player was guilty of a major breach his contract by refusing to play, the PFA backed Tevez's assertion that he only declined his manager's request to warm-up.

A club disciplinary panel determined the player to have committed five other breaches of contract for his actions at the Allianz Arena, and imposed a two-week suspension, which was deemed to have been served.

After earlier saying Tevez had no future at City during his tenure, manager Roberto Mancini has since offered the player a route back into the team, saying he could stop training alone if he apologised for his behaviour.

The Argentina striker has not featured for City since the incident in their 2-0 Champions League loss to Bayern on September 27.

In his absence, strong performances from fellow forwards Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli have helped to propel City to the top of English Premier League table.

City fines Toure for failed drugs test

9 November 2011

12427284950.jpg

Manchester City have fined defender Kolo Toure six weeks' wages as a result of his failed drugs test earlier this year.

The fine - thought to be in the region of 740,000 pounds - is the second punishment handed to Toure, with FA banning him for six months in March after ruling he had infringed World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines.

Toure was found guilty of taking a banned substance, said to be one of his wife's slimming pills.
The statement released by the club on Wednesday read: "Following the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process, Manchester City Football Club can confirm that Kolo Toure has received a fine of six weeks' wages which relates to doping offences committed by him earlier this year."

Kolo accepts the decision and he and the club now wish to draw a line under this matter and focus on the season ahead."
Toure has made five appearances for City this season after his ban ended, returning in September's 2-0 win against Birmingham in the League Cup.

Balotelli evidence revealed in Italian court

9 November 2011

12427284820.jpg

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has given evidence in an investigation into organised crime in Naples.

Balotelli is a witness in an anti-mafia case after he was called to testify by Italian police following his visit to an area of Naples known as Scampia in 2010.

Scampia has associations with organised crime and the drugs trade, but Balotelli has always maintained he was just passing through the area in the company of Marco Lorio who is under investigation.

Il Mattino reports an extract of some of the statements Balotelli gave to Italian prosecutors Sergio Amato and Enrica Parascondolo.

Speaking as a witness and nothing more, Balotelli said he was standing "about 10 metres from a table which contained bags of drugs on it."

Balotelli also said he was only in the area of Scampia visiting friends and he has always maintained he did not know some of the people he met there had alleged associations with organised crime in Italy.

Tevez continues to cause City problems

Manchester City have been angered by Carlos Tevez's latest indiscretion- the Argentine has returned to his native home without permission.
According to reports in the Sun, the ex-City captain was ordered to be at training on Wednesday, but refused to return from South America.

The 27-year-old did ask more than once for permission to return home during the international break, but was refused on each occasion.

This was because the club was concerned with his fitness level since his return to Carrinton last month, as a club spokesman said: "Carlos returned from his recent trip to Argentina and was not match fit.

"The coaches devised a training plan to return him to full fitness.

"Carlos is part way through that plan. He is due to resume training on Wednesday morning at Carrington following a rest day on Tuesday."

However, Tevez has gone AWOL, and flew to Buenos Aires on Monday, telling reporters when he landed: "I have come to rest a little."

This marks yet another episode in his long-running battle with the Man City hierarchy, as he is certain to face another misconduct charge after having been fined four weeks' wages - around £800,000 - for refusing to warm up to face Bayern Munich back in September.

Tevez faces fresh City sanctions

Carlos Tevez faces further punishment from Manchester City after the striker travelled to Argentina without the club's permission.

The 27-year-old landed at Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, despite a request to return to his homeland being declined by manager Roberto Mancini.

City say they expect the forward to return to training on Wednesday.

It is the latest in a long line of indiscretions involving Tevez, who on Tuesday accepted a fine from the club after refusing to warm-up in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich earlier this season.

The former Manchester United player was close to leaving England in the off-season but a move back to former side Corinthians fell through.

Ferdinand criticises FA in race row

9 November 2011

Rio Ferdinand has accused the FA of dragging its heels in the investigation into the alleged racial abuse of younger brother Anton Ferdinand by John Terry.

The Manchester United defender used Twitter to vent his frustration over the issue, just an hour before FIFA dismissed pleas from the FA to allow the England team to wear poppies in their game against Spain on Saturday.

The 33-year-old wrote: "Powers that be do make stands on certain issues I see."
Clearly unhappy with the FA's ability to solve other matters much faster, Ferdinand added: "Antolin Alcaraz of Wigan dealt with within three days …. #efficient"

Terry, who was accused of aiming racial abuse at Anton Ferdinand in Chelsea's game against QPR last month, has been selected by Fabio Capello for the England squad, and could even feature in Saturday's game at Wembley.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has also criticised the FA for its handling of the matter, accusing the FA of not being able to stand up to the England captain.

The FA is also investigating claims that Luis Suarez racially abused Patrice Evra in Liverpool's draw with Manchester United at Anfield, although the Uruguayan strongly denies the accusation and has asked for an apology.
