AVB calm despite horror defending

Andre Villas-Boas refused to panic about the threat of a second successive mid-season slump for Chelsea after watching his defence ripped apart by Arsenal.

The Blues conceded five goals at home for the first time in 22 years on Saturday to complete their and captain John Terry's week from hell.

Their nightmare began during last Sunday's 1-0 loss at QPR, with Saturday's 5-3 thriller seeing them suffer back-to-back Barclays Premier League defeats for the first time since they lost three out of four at almost the same point last season.

That kick-started their worst run in the league for almost 15 years, something from which they ultimately never recovered as they finished the campaign empty-handed.

Avoiding a repeat could prove even more difficult this season as, unlike last term when Chelsea looked like running away with the title, they have always been playing catch-up under Villas-Boas thanks to the near-perfect form of Manchester City.

But the man who was headhunted by Roman Abramovich following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti had no fears about his side going into meltdown this time round. Last year, we were exactly in the opposite situation," Villas-Boas said.

"I think, to be fair, it was not on this date that things changed - it was late November. "But the nature of the Premier League is exactly this, games that are so open like this between top teams and a Premier League that can dramatically change.

"Last year was the case on the wrong side for us and we have to continue to believe that this year, it will be on the good side for us." For that to happen in the Premier League, Chelsea will need City to drop far more than the two points Roberto Mancini's men have failed to pick up this season.

They also must sort out a defence that has not kept a clean sheet in the league since the opening weekend of the season - their worst run for 10 years - and conceded eight goals in their meetings with Manchester United and Arsenal.

Villas-Boas was recruited partly to make Chelsea more flamboyant but they simply cannot go on losing eight-goal thrillers. That will not involve Villas-Boas abandoning his attacking approach, however.
"The philosophy is a personal value and it's a club value and you should never sell it cheaply," he said.

"It's something that makes us all proud and we will stick to this philosophy throughout this league. "We just have to correct things to try to get our philosophy through." Seeing Chelsea shut up shop would certainly be bad news for the neutrals, who have been treated to a feast of attacking football at the top end of the Premier League this season.

Citing City's 6-1 thrashing of Manchester United last weekend, Villas-Boas said: "There is a 3-1 result at Old Trafford with 83 minutes on the clock and the game finishes 6-1, when the (home) team believes that with the emotions of the stands that they can get something out of that game.

"it happened the same (for us). We fought hard to get the 3-3, the emotions were behind us, it could be our best emotional moment to try to get the 4-3, and it happened the other way around. "So we were punished in that sense."

Villas-Boas, who insisted the inquiry into allegations captain Terry racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand last weekend - something Terry categorically denies - had no effect on his side's defending, added:

"Before this game, we were among the three best defences in the Premier League, so I would argue with anybody that our defensive organisation was a problem before this game. "We committed mistakes and we will try to evolve and maybe we can improve for the game against Blackburn."

Cech blames ´bad defending´ for Chelsea loss

31 October 2011

12427279880.jpg

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has bemoaned his side's defending following Saturday's 5-3 loss to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had twice led through Frank Lampard and John Terry although goals from Andre Santos, Theo Walcott and a Robin van Persie hat-trick, despite Juan Mata's 80th-minute strike, ensured Arsenal would claim all three points.

The result means the Blues lost ground to both Manchester clubs in the title race and Cech has expressed his disappointment at the performance - and his side's defending in particular.

"I am extremely disappointed about the result," he said on his personal website.
"But there is nothing we can do about it now - the only response is to win the following games."

"If my memory works well, this is the first time I have conceded five goals in one game. Up till this the maximum had been four."
"It was a result of bad defending of the entire team, outlined by individual errors.

We certainly can't blame only the defenders for the goals, we played poorly as a team."
The Czech Republic goalkeeper has been criticised in some quarters for his own performance and the Chelsea number one concedes that he was at fault for the goal that sealed van Persie's hat-trick.

"The last goal from Robin van Persie was from such a position I shouldn't concede goals," he added.
"The ball may have changed trajectory but I should have caught it.

As for Arsenal's third goal, I had it difficult against Walcott's shot."
"He aimed it precisely between me and the post and, moreover, it was a hard shot."

Solskjaer leads Molde to first Norwegian title

31 October 2011

12427279940.jpg

Molde coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed his delight at leading the Norwegian club to their first ever Tippeligaen title.

The club, established in 1911, accomplished their triumph on Sunday following their 2-2 draw with Stromsgodset, a result which was enough to hand them the title after Norwegian giants and second-placed Rosenborg suffered a 6-3 home loss to Brann.

The results mean that Molde are now eight points clear at the top of the first division table with two more rounds remaining, leaving Solskjaer overjoyed with his team's achievement in his first season in charge.

"The club has waited 100 years for this," the 38-year-old former Manchester United striker told VG. "We have been close several times so this was well deserved."

"When Brann went 4-1 up, I realised we had done it. It was a good atmosphere in the dressing room and we will enjoy ourselves tonight.

"
Solskjaer became Molde coach in January 2011 after two-and-a-half years as manager of Manchester United Reserves.

Pavlyuchenko seeks Spurs exit

31 October 2011

12427280220.jpg

Roman Pavlyuchenko says he wants to leave Tottenham in January to find first team football, with a return to Russia the likeliest option.

Russian striker Pavlyuchenko moved to White Hart Lane in 2008 but has never managed to hold down a regular starting spot, and now finds himself behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe in the pecking order.

With Euro 2012 on the horizon, the 29-year-old is keen to play as much football as possible to ensure he is selected for the tournament, and has concluded the only way to achieve his aim is to actively seek a transfer in the next window.

"Will I ask the club to sell me in December? Yes, it's 100 percent," Pavlyuchenko told football-express.com.
"I have to do something in the transfer period. We're ahead of the European Championship. If I don't change (my club) then Euro 2012 will be played without me.

"
Pavlyuchenko added he cannot understand why Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has lost faith in him."I was fighting and fighting but it was useless," he said. "Does Redknapp believe in me? Now I don't think so.""I do the training as good as the others.

I do everything with 100 percent effort."
"I don't cry and I don't say that everybody is bad but I'm a good footballer. If I score in each game then I can play. But it's not a reality to score in each game. That's all."

Promoted QPR have been linked with a move for Pavlyuchenko in January, but the player says he would prefer a return to his homeland, with big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala mooted as a likely destination.

"I'd rather go back to Russia," Pavlyuchenko said.
"If I sign to Anzhi or not - we shouldn't go too far. Maybe I'll have only one possibility and that will be Anzhi and nothing else."

Gerrard out for two weeks

1 November 2011

12427280780.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed Steven Gerrard will be sidelined for at least a fortnight because of an ankle infection.

The news rules the Reds captain out of England's two friendlies against Spain and Sweden later this month.

While not setting a date for the midfielder's return, the Anfield club have confirmed Gerrard will miss their home tie against Swansea City on Saturday.

A Liverpool statement read: "Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast."

"The player will not be available for this weekend's game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden."

"Steven will now continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the Club's medical staff.

"
Gerrard sustained the infection following a knock in training prior to Liverpool's Premier League match against West Brom over the weekend.

He has not featured for Kenny Dalglish's side since they drew with Manchester United in October.

Gerrard had only recently returned from a groin injury and has not featured in Fabio Capello's England squad since November 2010.

Mancini offers lifeline to Tevez

1 November 2011

12427280760.jpg

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says he would forgive striker Carlos Tevez if he apologises for refusing to warm up.

Tevez was suspended for two weeks and fined two weeks' wages by City for refusing to warm up in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich earlier this season.

Mancini initially claimed he would never play the striker again following the dispute, while Tevez has threatened legal action against the Italian for accusing him of refusing to play in Munich.

But Mancini has now offered the Argentine a lifeline by saying that things will be back to normal if Tevez apologises.

"Everything depends on Carlos. If he apologises to the squad and to me then everything will be as before," Mancini told Corriere della Sera.

"If he doesn't then Tevez has a value that everyone knows and something will happen in January."
"He is totally unprepared and being badly advised. I don't want it to be like this and I would be the first to forgive him.

"
Responding to speculation that Tevez might be heading to Serie A outfit Napoli in a straight swap for Ezequiel Lavezzi, Mancini said: "No one from City will be given away."

Ferguson: Rio no longer first choice

2 November 2011

12427280830.jpg

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says experienced defender Rio Ferdinand is no longer a guaranteed starter for his side.

Ferdinand, 32, has struggled with form this season and was dropped for United’s 1-0 win over the weekend at Everton.

Sir Alex also revealed he recently spoke to Ferdinand, who is poised to return to United's starting line-up for their Champions League game against Otelul Galati, about adjusting his game after losing some of his natural speed.

"I explained to Rio the other day simply this – 'we have two young centre-backs coming through and I'm happy to have four and hope I can keep four of them happy for a long time'," Ferguson told reporters.

"Rio's almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago but that doesn't mean to say he can't tailor his game into a different game where he doesn't rely on pace."

“We've all faced that, the decisive moment in your career when you realise you have to change your game. I did that myself when I lost some sharpness so I tailored my game differently.

Rio will do the same and he'll be fine."
"I don't think there will be any problem. In his time with us, eight years or so now, he's been a fantastic, consistent performer, top class and absolutely brilliant."

2 November 2011

The Metropolitan Police have launched a formal investigation into allegations that Chelsea’s John Terry racially abused Anton Ferdinand.

A police spokesman confirmed the investigation has been launched after authorities spent a week assessing a complaint made by a member of the public.

England captain Terry has denied directing racist comments at QPR defender Ferdinand during Chelsea's 1-0 defeat in the English Premier League match at Loftus Road on October 23.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Police were notified of an incident on Sunday, October 23 involving alleged racial abuse.

This is currently being investigated by officers from Hammersmith and Fulham."

Chelsea condemn fans´ chants

2 November 2011

12427281160.jpg

Chelsea have spoken out against their own fans who were taunting QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during their Champions League tie against Genk.

The Blues drew 1-1 in Belgium after having taken the lead through a first-half Ramires goal, but the match was overshadowed by a section of the visiting support who were thought to be singing: "Anton Ferdinand, you know what you are".

The chanting came in support of Chelsea captain John Terry, who is now under police investigation for allegedly racially abusing Ferdinand in the 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road last month.

However, soon after the match, a club spokesman quickly moved to distance the club from the fans’ actions, saying: "It was wholly inappropriate and we don't condone it."

The chanting has come at a bad time for the London outfit, who are suffering problems on and off the pitch, with fourth-placed Chelsea having lost their last two league matches.

Bolton debt hits 110 million pounds

2 November 2011

12427281270.jpg

Bolton have announced a loss of over 26 million pounds for the last financial year, which takes the club's debt to over 110 million pounds.

The news has prompted chairman Phil Gartside to reiterate the Premier League club's dependence on the financial backing of multi-millionaire owner Eddie Davies.

The latest figures show record debt levels at the club despite increased ticket revenue and an FA Cup run which saw Bolton reach the semi-final of the competition.

Most of the debt is owed to owner Davies, prompting Gartside to stress the importance of Davies' role in the club he took over eight years ago.
"I have said this before, we cannot ever underestimate what Eddie Davies does for our club," Gartside told reporters.

"As a fan and our owner, he continues to significantly back us on and off the pitch, and he has done that again."
"As the report shows, our debt is to Eddie, and as a result of that support, we have no dangerous levels of bank debt which is a major plus fact for our club."

"Eddie has invested more than 100 million pounds in the Wanderers. He is a huge factor in the time we have enjoyed in this elite league and he continues to back us."
Davies' financial backing has helped Bolton consolidate their place in the Premier League since their promotion in 2001.

Gartside was also quick to stress the club have been able to achieve such status without selling their major assets.
"Year on year, we have also reduced our losses and that is without any significant player trading."

"In fact we added to the squad, and so that is encouraging because obviously as we go forward we will be subject to the forthcoming framework of the Financial Fair Play, and it is good to have been able to achieve that progress in cutting the losses."

Europe´s elite keeping tabs on Maher

2 November 2011

12427281320.jpg

The father of AZ Alkmaar starlet Adam Maher says Barcelona are not the only team keeping tabs on the attacking midfielder.

Ider Maher told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf clubs such as AC Milan, Manchester City and Lyon had previously attempted to sign the 18-year-old.

Barcelona will reportedly send a scout to the Eredivisie match between AZ and ADO Den Haag on Sunday to have a closer look, but the Catalans will face stiff competition for his signature.

Despite the interest from abroad, Ider Maher stressed the Netherlands under-19 star is not ready to leave the Eredivisie just yet.

"He could have joined AC Milan, Manchester City or Olympique Lyonnais a few years ago," Maher's father said.
"It was too early for a move abroad, though - and it still is.

Adam is still too young for such a big step. There's plenty of time to leave in three or four years time."
Maher's contract with Eredivisie leaders AZ runs until the end of the 2014/15 season.

Ferguson reveals greatest football regret

Despite all the trophies he has acquired in his time at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson admits he still rues the one that got away.

The wily tactician admitted that their loss to West Ham on May 14, in the 1994/95 season still grates on his nerves, especially given that victory would have resulted in yet another Premier League triumph, as key competitors Blackburn had stumbled to a defeat to Liverpool on the last day of the season.

Speaking to the Sun, the Scot raged: "The West Ham game, away, in 1995 when we drew 1-1", when asked which game in his management history did he regret the most. "The referee missed a blatant penalty kick when their defender Tim Breacker punched the ball away. It was unbelievable", Ferguson added.

"That was the one game I would change because we really deserved to win that day. It was agony, the mayhem around that goalmouth. It just wasn't for us. Fate goes different ways sometimes." The 69-year-old Scot gave an insight towards what has kept him going all these years, saying: "The club drives you - or the expectation of the club, put it that way.

"But I couldn't have dreamt then that I'd still be here now. I think you have to have a natural energy, which I've always had. "That probably dates back to the foundation of my early life. I don't think there's anything strange about that. You can trace it in a lot of people."

The manager has signed many stars in his time, and one of his more recent acquisitions, Javier Hernandez, told club magazine Inside United what has impressed him about Ferguson since arriving from Chivas 18 months ago.

The 23-year-old lauded: "What's impressed me most about him, and this is something I noticed from the first day I met him, is that he's a very simple person. "You can talk about all the things he's won and all the years he's been in charge but you wouldn't know it if you watched him on the bench.

"Every game looks like it's his first. He's so excited, so enthusiastic. He wants to win so much. "That is the key, he will never get bored of winning and he enjoys what he does. "He's also a really nice man. Every day he'll ask me how I'm feeling, whether I'm OK, whether I need anything.

"He's just an unbelievable person. He recognises that first you are a human being and then you are a football player. "I hope he stays on for a few more years and then, when it comes for me to retire, I know I'll be so proud to say: 'I was a player of Sir Alex Ferguson.'

"Ask any player around the world which manager they want to work with and they will name him", the Mexican star concluded.

Manchester City strikers Andreas Mancini and Luca Scapuzzi have completed loan moves to League One side Oldham Athletic.

Mancini, the son of City manager Roberto, will spend an initial month at Boundary Park with a view to extending his stay, while Scapuzzi will make a two-month switch until the beginning of the January transfer window.

The young forwards will link up with former City striker Paul Dickov, who is now the manager at the Premier League side's Greater Manchester neighbours.

"We have got a couple of strikers out with injury and I am really grateful to Roberto Mancini for allowing these deals to go through," Dickov told Manchester City's official website.

"Luca's confidence is high at the moment after his appearance, assists, and goal in the League Cup against Wolves and hopefully he will bring that with him."

"I have seen both Luca and Andrea play this season and they are both decent players. They train here for the first time today (3 November) and then we will see where we go from there."
"We have four games in the next two weeks so they will definitely see some action."

20-year old Scapuzzi has made two first-team appearances for City, both in the League Cup, while 19-year old Mancini arrived from Serie A outfit Bologna in November last year and is yet to make his senior debut.
