Thailand is asking the government of Montenegro to monitor the movements of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra after he was reportedly spotted in the southeastern European nation.
Panich Vikitsreth, assistant to the foreign minister, said yesterday the Foreign Ministry had contacted its counterpart in Montenegro to keep a close watch on Thaksin's political activities.
The Thai embassy in Hungary, whose diplomatic mission includes Montenegro, has also been ordered to monitor Thaksin, he said.
A local TV station, TV Vijesti in Podgorica, reported yesterday, quoting witnesses, that Thaksin had been spotted in the Montenegrin town of Budva at the weekend.
The station said Thaksin was seen in coastal Budva's medieval old town on Sunday enjoying coffee and cakes in one of the area's posh hotels with his entourage.
Police refused to comment on the reports.
Press reports say Thaksin has a Montenegrin passport but officials in the former Yugoslav republic have refused to confirm if he had been given citizenship.
Thaksin said in a Twitter message on Friday that he was on the way to meet his daughters, Pinthongta and Paethongtarn, in Europe. He did not name the destination.
His daughters attended an exhibition in Berlin last week.
The Foreign Ministry held talks with Montenegro after it was confirmed Thaksin had obtained a passport.
Noppadon Patama, Thakin's legal adviser, yesterday confirmed the former prime minister was in Montenegro.
