At Changi Airport.....

I was at Changi Airport this evening to receive a friend.

I noticed one Policeman and two SAF soldiers were prowling at the arrival Hall.

The Policeman looked like he was in his mid to late 20s...The two SAF soldiers were abt 20 years old...so they must be National Serviceman, doing their time for Singapore.

The Policeman was slack...dragging his feet when he prowled...lacks bearing, long hair, looked untidy with beret dishevelled. The soldiers looked smart, prowled with good poise, smart beret with sunglasses and had good bearing. The Policeman looked sadly unfit compared to the fit looking soldiers. It was a sad, drastic contrast.

The Policeman must be a regular Serviceman whereas the soldiers must be NSFs. The Policeman probably is 'O' level holder and is well paid...maybe three thousand dollars a month, gets his performance bonus in Apr, mid-yr bonus in Jul and two month end-of-year bonus in Dec.

The SAF soldier probably is 'A' level holder, gets $450 to $650 a month NS allowance and has to do two yrs NS for SG. No performance bonus in Apr, no mid-yr bonus in Jul and zero bonus in Dec.

Looking at the contrast, I cant help but feel the injustice imposed on our young men who have to do NS.

while it is no excuse for a policeman or any uniformed personnel on duty to disregard their turnout and bearing like that, it is also perhaps a tad unfair to judge everything without knowing what these uniformed men are going through.

it's unfair to judge them by their perceived salary when you don't know what's going on within the management.

I have, on many occasion witness the opposite on the other hand, sharp looking policeman leading shabby army personnel. So it is safe to say that what you saw is definitely not the norm. When I needed assistance several months ago, I approached these fit looking army boys, they look at me blankly and just walked away, it was an unfit looking policeman who then appeared from behind and assisted me. So should I judge the entire SAF for that sole incident? that would be unfair.

Have you ever thought the sloppy policeman could be a reservist KINSmen doing his annual duty rather than a well paid public servant. If the bugger is a regular, his hair will definitely not be long.

Not likely as I dont think Shanmugum dares to risk putting three NS personnel to patrol together.

It is nice to know that a SG man like you agrees that NS is killing SG guys

Haven't you already hit the nail on the head? The SAF soldier will likely graduate from Oxbridge/London/NUS/SMU/NTU/etc and will one day be the policeman's boss. And come to think of it, $3k a month is a lot for an O level holder, possible only in a uniform. But he serves his purpose.

Why not? He was bold enough to issue statements that only fools believe. And they screwed up big time with MSK's escape and their failure to have his bro's flat monitored.

Can it be any worse when those supposedly looking after MSK weren't NS men? Gurkhas were involved. And whoever was supposed to monitor the Tampines flat, if it was indeed monitored, would most unlikely be NS men.

Maybe Shanmugam now believes NS chaps more dependable than regulars.

Is it good planning to have a composite crew of Police NSman and SAF NSFs patrolling in a very fluid and public environment like the Changi Airport and carrying live ammunitions. Doesnt sound like good Crew Resource Mgmt to me.

Either Home Ministry officials are very sure or they are very irresponsible

NSFs have been used to help out in corporate events such as F1 race. Is this morally correct?

when my brother was called up for NS, he was told it was for SG's security.

F1 is OBS's project and is a commercial event. OBS shd employ commercial crew and pay them market rates and create jobs for Singaporeans. Why does the SAF agree to release NSFs to OBS for free?

Usually in police patrol group, as least the patrol leader is a regular. Army units functioning with all NSmen from OC to Pte. is common, but that's very rare with police. In this combination of police plus army, the policeman should be the leader and should be a regular but more likely an ex-regular reservist as this type of tasks are normally assigned to them.

i feel awkward and uncomfortable if i know the policeman is an NSman and the soldiers are NSFs.

My questions wld be: "how qualified and experienced is this team? will they be able to handle the unexpected?"
