apple have been saying since kingdom come
before tiger, they said tiger will bring better multi core
then tiger came and look still the same shit
they then promise leopard.....

I'm still using panther because my iBook uses a PowerPC processor.

I don't remember Apple promising multi-core support with the release of Tiger  Tiger was released in 2005 & back then I don't think there were such things as multi-core processors . If I remember, the talk back then was about 32 & 64 bit OSes.

For most of us the choice of OSes is between Windows & Mac. (Linux is still a minor played) Looking at the track record of the 2 companies MS has dropped the ball badly with Vista.

Personally I don't use all the bells & whistle that comes with a modern OS. However heard that Snow Leopard is being optimized for speed & that is something I can appreciate. So may replace my iBook if it turns out to be true

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a laptop.
My basic spec would be :
speed about 2 Ghz
Ram 2G
DVD burner
screen about 14 "
windows vista premiun
about $1000 - $1200

Anyone has a good recommendation?
Do you think $1000 -$1200 can get?
Thanks

U must be a sucker for punishment to stipulate Vista. It sucks, if u can, stick to Windows XP. It does not really matter which brand u buy. Most laptop makers buy their components from the same few suppliers. So, for example, the same type of harddrive could be in a Toshiba, Acer, Dell, or other brands of laptops. Better bet would be to go with a good CPU, like a Pentium Dual Core. Don't get a Celeron based laptop, or laptops that use AMD, or other chipsets. And than, see who has the best warranty and service. I currently own a Compaq, Dell, Acer, and HP laptops, and there is no difference between them in terms of reliability. In terms of performance, the newer laptops are faster. Basically within 6 months, your new laptop will be outdated anyway.

Mac is good when Windows is in Win95 and Win98 era. When PCs is in the Win 2000 and WinXP era and the Macs in OS 8 and OS9. I believe the PC is better because lousy Mac OS9 is not fully internet capable. It lack many advanced essential internet techonologies. This forces Apple to switch to Unix and thus OS X. And the first OS X is a disaster. So many compatiblity and drivers problems.

Then came the ports and accessories problem. It was all diiferent from PC computer last time. It cost a lot more to get anything for the Mac. ADB keyboard cost more than $100! It's a rip-off and other accessories all cost .

The switch to Unix had nothing to do with lack of internet connection. They needed a modern OS & when they brought in Steve Jobs, they also got his company NEXT Computers. Next computers uses a UNIX OS which is the basis of the current Mac OS.

The main reason the initial releases of OS X had problems was because Apple was transitioning from the Motorola PowerPC to the Intel processor.

For your information OS 9 has always been internet capable. I was using OS 9 to connect to the internet. The problem is that back then, Singtel didn't provide Mac support. You even had Singtel tell customers that it was a problem with the Apple equipment when the problem was with the setting:rolleyes:

.

Yes have to agree that Apple equipment has always been more expensive, but this is also true if you buy original IBM, DEC, Compaq(the old compaq) equipment.

Still have an Apple Extended keyboard in my closet. Did you know that Apple has service parts for these keyboards  You can replace each key separately  Those were the days that they over engineered their products,

The high repair costs is to encourage people to buy a new computer instead of repairing it. Thats why I think people should consider getting Applecare extended warranties, They provide an extra 2 years of warranty.

Don't buy acer, lousy quality. Buy a DELL, you won't regret. Buy online, no need to talk to ah beng.

I agree... buying dell is simple process. no need to talk to ah beng. just need to call dell sale line, speak to the sale consultant, they can advise you and give you a good price. They can ship to you within few days.

In my opinion, dell is only good for these :
1. reasonably price.
2. easy to use, easy to reformat
3. not bad after sale service

However, lousy in this area :
1. multi media (no good for music or movie)
2. gaming
3. parts (battery , harddisk.... etc ) are not as reliable as other more expensive brands. but of course, you can get it easily replaced if faulty

Overall, I believe dell is value for money, for easy office use only.

If can spend 30% more, I suggest go for HP, Toshiba, or even IBM and Sony....

by the way, any one try any local brand ?

Good idea. But as I'd said in my previous post, Mac doesn't solve the problems of Win - the Win partition would be just as susceptible to virus, high memory needs, etc.

Get a Mac, install Windows on bootcamp and get the best of both world:wink:
