<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to the article "Let's talk to teens about sex" yesterday by Chua Mui Hoong.
The writer correctly points out that sex education should begin at home with parents taking an active role in promoting healthy sex education. It is shocking to know that in some schools, students are told that it is all right to view pornography and to experiment.
As parents, we do not tell our children such things nor encourage them to do such things.
I grew up in India. During my school days, words like gay, lesbian and homosexual were hardly heard of. I think the main reason was that Asian parents placed much importance on family values and the social stigma attached to lesbianism and unwanted pregnancies kept students away from such activities.
I firmly believe that encouraging homosexuality sends the wrong signal to our youngsters.
Hence, I would like to congratulate Aware's new executive committee for their bold stand against lesbianism and homosexuality in schools. They should be applauded for bringing these issues into the limelight. They are doing a service to our society by highlighting them.
I hope Aware will focus on promoting family values, positive thinking, kindness and healthy living besides spiritualism. Veena Pereira (Mrs)
