STB's Ken Low dies suddenly at age 45
By Ng Jing Yng | Posted: 08 July 2010 2322 hrs

SINGAPORE : The man behind the branding that boosted Singapore's tourist draw through the "Uniquely Singapore" and the latest "YourSingapore" campaigns died suddenly on Wednesday.

Mr Ken Low, 45, assistant chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), was a bachelor. His body was cremated on Thursday.

"The entire Singapore Tourism Board is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Ken's sudden passing," said STB's chief executive, Ms Aw Kah Peng.

Mr Low was a man who wore many hats, including overseeing the Singapore Pavilions at the Aichi World Expo in 2005 and the Shanghai World Expo this year.

He also served as a Board member of the National Heritage Board and the Singapore Film Commission.

The multi-million-dollar revamped tagline "YourSingapore" which was introduced in March drew flak from the public, which had perhaps, grown accustomed to the long-established "Uniquely Singapore" image.

But Mr Low stood by the revamp and remained unfazed by the criticisms.

Mr Low is believed to have succumbed to complications related to a lung-related illness.

Besides fronting the tourism campaign for Singapore, Mr Low's creative drive included composing several songs for the popular musical Chang and Eng.

He is also reported to have played an active role in local drama group Action Theatre.

Mr Low joined STB in 2003 as director of Brand Management and assumed his current position in 2006.

Ms Aw said that at work, Mr Low "inspired us with his creativity and galvanised everyone in the most challenging of projects. He will be deeply missed by all his colleagues and friends at the Board."

FRIENDS and colleagues from the arts and business communities hailed composer and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) marketing chief Ken Low yesterday as a Renaissance man.
Good with numbers? Give yourself the skills that every Organisation needs.

He died of complications from pneumonia on Wednesday.

Mr Low, 49, was the assistant chief executive for STB's marketing group and was the man behind the Uniquely Singapore and the recent YourSingapore tourism campaigns.

He also composed the music for the 1997 Action Theatre hit musical, Chang & Eng, about the famous Siamese twins.

Long-time friend and founder of Action Theatre Ekachai Uekrongtham told my paper on the phone from Bangkok that Mr Low seemed hale and hearty in May, but had fallen "really ill" last month.

Mr Low contributed much to promote Singapore globally as a tourist destination. The bachelor joined the STB in 2003 as a director for brand management and propelled the STB's Uniquely Singapore branding in 2004.

He oversaw Singapore pavilions at Japan's Aichi World Expo in 2005, as well as China's Shanghai World Expo this year, after his appointment as assistant chief executive for brand and communications in 2006.

This year's YourSingapore tourism branding, which succeeds Uniquely Singapore, was also driven by Mr Low.

Ms Aw Kah Peng, STB's chief executive, said he "brought a unique blend of creativity, personal passion and business experience to tourism marketing".

"At work, Ken inspired us with his creativity and galvanised everyone in the most challenging of projects," she added. Mr Low was also the resident music director of Action Theatre, where he composed for 1995's Corporate Animals and 2005's The Admiral's Odyssey.

Uekrongtham said Mr Low was a rare talent because he was not just a creative force in the arts, but also accomplished in business, having held past positions in Citibank, Singapore Post and the Esplanade.

A perfectionist, Mr Low was passionate about everything he did, Uekrongtham said.

"In the past few months, he had worked very, very hard and travelled a lot to promote Singapore. He really gave himself to his work," he said.

He learnt of Mr Low's death yesterday morning from a family friend of Mr Low.

Mr Jeremiah Choy, president of the Association of Singapore Actors, said that Mr Low respected those he worked with.

Mr Choy had worked with him on several STB projects.

He said Mr Low was opinionated but open-minded. "When you have something to contribute, he listened to you. It's very inspiring to know somebody like that," said Mr Choy.

Film-maker and Action Theatre artistic consultant Pek Siok Lian said Mr Low was a "collaborator- in-arms for many years".

"But he was always so modest, so diffident about his abilities...which was a big part of his charm," she said.

died suddenly on Wed, cremate on thurs.....that's very fast. What do you think got to him? some cover-ups by the 154th, don't you think so?

Let's put it this way. It is not easy to die of pneumonia in Singapore.

I believe it is H1N15 virus.

How can a healthy young man die so suddenly and cremated the next day after this death.

If Singapore declare this case then no one will come to the YOP which after all is a non-event to many of the particating countries. They will not put their youths at risk.

PAP poured in some S$378 million to this event, which you think of it does not need to build any major sports projects so why so much money is needed....3 times over the budget. I am sure they need to pay for ALL the airfare, expenses, food and accomodation plus extra pocket money to all thos Youth participants, their parents, coach and teachers to come to Singapore.

So with such amount of money commited, how can they let H1N15 scare away everyone.

Besides, the two casinos just opened and if the H1N15 virus, which is hundreds fo times more infectuous than H1N1, is dclared, then no tourists dare to come.

Worst, F1 is in Sept.

So it can be a triple blow to the tourist industy. And this can easily extend right to the Christmas and Chinese New Year in 2011.

The Singapore tourist industry will come to a halt.

Let's watch the good show.

is there a directive somewhere in the books of MOH that states cremation within 24 hrs for h1n15 cases?

He died of aids. After all these years, you guys should know how these are done. He is not the first personality where the press has been vague. Its unfortunate but these are realities of life.

Okay, since you've broken it, then I see no need to hold back either.

I was actually wondering if I was the only one who thought he looked like a gay faggot, and well, apparently there is at least room for a second similar opinion.

This disgusting fag. So what if you are in a high appointment and you have a nice house by the beach and all of the fine things in life if your sexual orientation is actually deviated and you live constantly with the risk (or even a barely-accepted fear) of dying unnaturally early (of AIDS)?

Yes, the arts scene have always had much more than their fair share of the "alternate" lifestyle as compared to say, the local music scene. Perhaps their artistic flair and overseas "engagements" has exposed them to this culture.

...and the off and on behind entry rendezvous:D:D:D:D

Just becareful whom you have 'tiger' with on Sunday night... ha ha ha:D

I give you a crushing Tiger Uppercut then you know. So fat.

But seriously, if she is a young female kyonshi (jiangshi) I would gently lift up the charm and kiss her on the cheek. And of course, as a chivalrous knight proudly bearing the imperial coat of arms I will take good care of her and make sure she's safe and okay ~

Any chink or renegade chink monkeys who dare shout "反清復明" "洪門萬歲" in our presence will get a blood-curdling yell from me to shut their traps up.

All the classic signs there and some still think of H1N1. keke

I wonder whether all the STB staff are now scrubbing themselves with dettol, remembering how they shook hands? maybe share meals or even hugs. :P
