Every National Day reminds me of someone who charted the course of history in Singapore.
Last Sunday's 44th National Day celebration was a more emotional one as it again reminded me of the person who was at the parade: Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew (above left, with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong).
Our achievements are due to MM Lee's remarkable vision, and his team of capable lieutenants.
While Sir Stamford Raffles may have founded Singapore when he sussed out the island in 1819 for economic and political advantage on behalf of the British empire, it was MM Lee who charted the significant course of our island's modern history and transformed Singapore into the significant 'little red dot' that it is today.
For the 44th National Day, I wish MM Lee good health and hope that he will consider a nomination as our next president.
There is none more deserving of the highest state office than MM Lee.
Ben Lee

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I watched the National Day Parade on the Internet with immense pride last Sunday.
This was only the second time in my life that I had been away from Singapore during this period, and it was for business.
I even recited the national Pledge in my small hotel room at 8.22pm (Singapore time).
It is only when you are abroad that you realise what it means to be a Singaporean. I felt a tinge of regret that I was unable to accompany my son to the National Day Parade. He was very excited in the days leading up to National Day. I could sense his joy over the phone.
He is too young to understand how Independence came about and why Singapore has been celebrating this special day for the past 44 years.
We may be in the midst of the most severe economic crisis, but we have overcome many challenges before, so there is no doubt in my mind that my son's future will be bright simply because we have always adapted and adjusted to a constantly changing world.
At the weekend, I had dinner with a European couple who are relocating to Singapore. They look forward to living on this tropical island. I told them we are still a young country, unlike many European countries, and we are still evolving as a nation.
I am proud to be a Singaporean. To me, Singapore is almost a perfect society. Majulah Singapura!
