Another 'chui kong, lampar song' article by Han Fook Kwang on COEs

The COE has already limited the number of cars on the road as described by the tall and Taiwanese looking transportation expert. He said that the Government need not go to the extend to heighten the door step to discourage those who have not had enough cash to buy cars. The quota is already fixed, so there is no way the vehicles will increase on the road suddenly for that month.

You see, he was reminding us of this fact which means PAP has done this on purpose to get rid of the average person to own cars so that the rich can have more chance getting them.

The question all of us is asking is not just how to get rid of congestion. We are also asking at the same time, how not to have to pay a high COE. The answer is not considered good enough if you only answer it from the angle of making the right personal choice according to your affordability. In other words, whether you choose to take bus/MRT or buy car, it should not be exorbitant.

then how can we control the number of cars on the roads of Singapore?

How? Reduce the population to a saner, more sustainable level.

Remember, it is not just privately owned cars that cause congestion. Delivery trucks, cement trucks, vans, motorbikes, buses etc also contribute to congestion. And vehicle population increases in tandem with human population.

If you don't have a big suitcase, don't put so many clothes into it.

Just a crazy idea and really thinking out of the box. Ban car ownership. If you need a car, you rent. From a government controlled organization that caps the number of cars depending on the capacity of the infrastructure. The idea is since you don't own the car, your desire to have one is not there and you look at your real need.

After posting this comment, I came across an article in The Economist that wrote of Peer to Peer sharing which is quite relevant here:

The French system will DISallow that to happen. ;)

It is a bad system which will go against us BUT not for the evil regime. In this way, they can be sure that the COE is always high.

My system is a fair system that will ALLOW a few bidders to get a good deal for not trying to jack the prices. Example rich man bids $50,000 and a poorer man bids for the same cat at only $50. The rich man will get it because of priority of being at the top of the chart but he still has to pay the hefty price for being at the top while the poorer man still get his COE at the bottom of the chart for a mere 50 bucks.

To me, this is fair. This will teach the rich man a lesson not to be so Kiasu. :p

But, do you think PAP will help the average joe on the street ?
