At 8:40 min,
FB:"There is no policy that everything posted has to be true, verified and accurate. "
Shanmugam : "... and therefore even if it is false, you will not take it down"
This statement by Shanmugam is dumb!
I just click on the video (not really interested). Just these short exchanges show our law minister is not as smart and clever as a lawyer and minister should be. Facebook would have to cease operation it were legally obligated to ensure and verify truth; how do you monitor every post made on Facebook? It is just a nonsensical allegation that Facebook will not act "even if it is false". Even if Obama himself openly stated he is not a Muslim, we could even assume he was lying for the sake of his political career. So reporting that Obama is actually a Muslim cannot be said to be fake news. Who in the world knows when a person is lying or when he is not lying. Of course, it is a serious allegation that Hilary Clinton runs a pedophile ring. But how can Facebook be expected to know it is not a fact. It is the people who should be smart to know what to trust and what not to trust.
It is OK to have legislation on fake news when the manner of determination of truth is a simple matter of fact. It is fake news if, in a particular speech, Obama said he is not a Muslim but it is reported that "Obama himself said at the speech he is a Muslim" - there is no controversy here at all about a fact.
OK. The whole world says Einstein is one of the greatest genius ever. His theory of relativity is taught in all top universities in the world including the Chinese universities like Tsinghua, Peking and Fudan. Many thousands of articles on relativity theory have been published in top peer review physics journal in the world. So, is it a "fact" that "Einstein is a genius"? Is it a "fact" that Einstein's relativity theory is one of the best tested and verified theory? I beg to differ. My homepage has seven of my papers that explain why Einstein's relativity, including his famous equation E=mc², to be wrong.
So what is fact and none-fact in many things is a matter of personal judgment and opinion.
