Barclays banker sacked for tirade against construction workers

[SINGAPORE] Barclays Capital has sacked its head of FX strategy for the Asia-Pacific, Olivier Desbarres, following his display of racist and threatening behaviour towards some construction workers last month.

Frustrated with the noise from two construction sites along the street where he lived, he apparently finally "lost it" one weekend.

A video that captured his rant, uploaded on citizen-journalism website Stomp, went viral.

The bank said his last day was Oct 29, but declined to say more.

Police report made on ex-Barclays trader who abused workers

The incident of a senior Barclays bank trader who was caught on camera shouting profanities and threatening the lives of construction workers in Singapore is now making its way to international news websites.

Olivier Desbarres, who was the head of foreign exchange strategy in Asia-Pacific and based in Singapore, reportedly went berserk outside his Katong home and started hollering at workers because he apparently could not stand the noise being made.

The news has now made it to International Business Times, The Times of UK, and the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Unison Construction, whose workers were verbally abused and threatened by Desbarres, filed a police report and the Singapore police is investigating.

In the video, Desbarres was heard shouting: “I’m gonna go after you. I’m gonna burn your f****** house down. You have no respect. You know what? You’re f******* animals. Chinese f******* animals.”

He was wearing a blue polo t-shirt, white bermudas and sandals, as he continued yelling: “I have a life. I have a family. You break that, I will find your f******* family. I can find it very easily. I’m a man with resources.”

He then took a large sheet of metal and threw it down the construction pit.

When he realised he was being filmed, he said: “You’re filming me? You think that’s good? Put your f******* phone down because I’m going to wait for you to come out and take that phone and shove it up your f******* a**.”
