Tragedy has struck a family with the sudden death of its only breadwinner.
Taxi driver Sun Leong Hock, 49, collapsed and died in the toilet of his three-room flat on Ubi Avenue 1 on Monday.
His widow, Madam Darsinah, a 30-year-old Indonesian, is now left to cope with their three young kids and heavy debt. <TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=0 width=300 align=right><TBODY><TR><TD><!-- Copyright DoubleClick Inc., All rights reserved. --><!-- This code was autogenerated @ Mon Apr 05 03:43:56 EDT 2010 --></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Mr Sun handled the household expenses, giving his wife $10 a day to buy food for herself and the kids.
This was the only money she ever handled, Madam Darsinah said, and now she must contend with overdue bills.
She showed The New Paper reminder letters asking for payment of $2,109.50 arrears on their flat's mortgage and $113.70 in utility bills. Madam Darsinah said she had no savings and did not know if her husband had any.

So what is our PAP government is doing for this poor family???

They talked a lot of moral values and appreciation like doing a grand wake for our late Dr Goh Keng Swee.

So what are our PAP government is doing now to help this poor family???

So much media coverage and all PAP ministers went and paid their last visit late DR Goh Keng Swee, are they doing it for the live to see or the dead???

very simple solution

mortgage insurance will pay for the flat

live in one room with kids, rent out the other, divide the living room, rent out

problem solved

Singapore is NOT a welfare state. It is not the government's job to take care of people who don't take care of themselves.

She wouldn't be in her current predicament if her loser husband had planned financially for his eventual demise.

Perhaps they can ask Vivian.
He claims that SG is the best place to be for people who are poor.

Singapore offers the best opportunities for everyone and that includes the poor.

It does not offer handouts to freeloaders who are too lazy to work and too stupid to plan their finances.

I feel sad for them...and as for sam's comments really very crude. You think all are aware of financial planning?

And what if you die suddenly in your own toilet?

Crude but true. Why should the government rob the productive to feed the unproductive?

What makes you think the rich are productive?

Good one!

I think people forget the virtue of helping one another. people used to believe that, if you help people now, some days in future you may need help from others. That is the spirit of 同舟共济。

If what you say is true, then how can you explain why tax payers have to pay for an 80+ multi-million salary. plus a pension, plus his benefits, plus his directorships fees,,.... All this & MPs don't have to pay any income tax

Singapore is not a welfare state, but we have been looking after the welfare of the SINgapore government, we pay taxes, like GST, contribute to government coffers like, ERP, COE, GST, TV Licence etc. When we are productive we work, we contribute to an everlasting Financial pool called Central provident fund, which in directly contribute to the welfare of the current political government.

We are not welfare...but we care for the WELFARE of the government...:D

Unfortunately, PAP has taken our welfare money and started to pay themselves million dollars salary. This is more than just welfare and perks to themselves, it is called exploitation and corruption to the extreme. No minister in the world has stolen so much tax and give out so little to the people.

Waht are you talking about...of course we do not want to promote people who will become parasites,,,but humantarian reasons, some fall unexpectedly into situation.

It is the duty of any governent on this earth, to look after the welfare of the poeople, especially one that is paid astronomical sum in wages.

It is not the question of productive or not productive...in despondent situation the woman if willing to work hard for a living to survive & feed her family...she will be even 1,000 times more productive than the entire cabinet of ministers...
