That property is private property which belongs to the Lee family. It is NOT State property.
When our great Founding Father the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew & his brave visionary team won Independence for our forefathers & us, he could have moved into the Istana, as it is where the Head of State would reside.
However, Mr Lee believed in Democracy & its principles, & chose a private residence instead, & left the Istana to the President of Singapore, & taught his family to live like normal citizens as all are equal, instead of spoiling them.
Thus, 38 Oxley is not a National monument, or even the home that our great Founder was born in. It is just another private home, although fond memories by many & the family whom grew up there, & DO have significance close to their heart, to want it demolished.
Singapore, thru careful guidance & leadership, is meant to last for centuries. There will be many more PM, Ministers, etc to come, over time, & most of them will live in private residences.
No matter how much they had done, it will NOT be their homes that will be a lasting legacy. It will be their Public OFFICE actions & words that matter more.
Their family members do not owe anyone any explanations on what they do in private so long as it does not harm citizens, as such are PRIVATE matters which are respected & MUST be respected by others, to give them space. Family feuds are normal, & will have to be settled thru legal arbitration. We are a Democratic Nation. There is no need to come to blows or public spats.
No matter what happens to 38 Oxley, our National Monuments will still stand - the Istana, our Parliament house, our Courts, our Museums, as well as more critically, our school textbooks on the History of Singapore, which will ingrained into the minds of our next generations on how we became an Independent Nation & what we are, & what we stand for.
