There is a reason for it, because you are electing a team to represent you when you are going to a general election and not just electing an individual in that constituency, but really, you are electing a member of a government and the person stands wearing a logo representing a political party.
(Ahem, a constituency, and a single member constituency is controlled by one person, one MP. Who says we are electing a team?)
"Really, the right way to choose a government is in a general election when the choice is put and that choice is really for the term of the government. Unless there is a complete change in Parliament, otherwise, individual MPs - whether they resign or something happens to them - ought not to be able to upset the overall political situation, and that's the reason why it is designed like this.
(Elections chooses MPs, the collective results of elections choose governments! Which dictionary do you have? So if many MPs resign, its ok to have seats vacant issit? If many people don't turn up for a show, it's ok in the eyes of the manager issit?)
"Of course, in a practical situation, if you do have a vacancy, if there is no special reason one way or the other, then there would be expectations that you ought to have a by-election to fill the seat, and that's something which I will consider.
(What logic is this? If you are vacant you need to say you have to occupy it.)
"We are different, because we started off different when we went into Malaysia. When we were in Malaysia, we complied with the Malaysian norms, and in the light of the experience we had during that period, after we left Malaysia, we changed back to what we were before the Malaysian period, because we did not want in a tight situation, one person deciding to resign and therefore forcing the government to change.
(you are the only Martians on earth)
"Why should one person decide what really should be decided by the electorate as a whole. So there is a reason for that. You may accept it to a certain degree, you may have a view, but it is not something that is accidental."
(CB! What logic is this!!)

So technically by his logic, he can fire almost all the pap backbenchers and still not hold any by election.

Yes. One person to run the whole show because he got endorsement at a general election. Interesting political regime. Really important to call an international press conference to clarify this.

His mischief knows no boundaries. He wants the benefits of the proportional representation list MP system without the downsides involved in controlling only 60.1% of parliament.

Pinky is only good in the classroom and exam hall as a student. In real life, absolutely zero.

He just have to "convince" enough parrots among the voters.

no need to convince anyone lah..................only reason why they never declare S'pore an absolute monarchy is becoz of international pressure only.........no resistance within S'pore lah...........

When it election time, he will sing a different tune. By then their campaign will center around how the respective PAP Mp have help the residents, improve the estate etc.

Electing a party/gov will probable demote to second fiddle.
