A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

I passed by that junction 5 minutes ago. They must have cleared up the area. Only two fat police taking notes.
Have to. That road is one of the most busiest road in Pattaya. Too many people need to go Tuk Com. Market Wat Chai and School. The only time this road close was during late october for the royal cremation ceremony at Wat Chai.

If taking bus back to Pattaya from Morchit 2 (Main Bus Terminal), go to bus bay 78. Its at the extreme right end when coming out from the back of the main building. Fare should be 117 Baht. Journey should be around 3 hours or more as today is part of super long weekend (Tommorro is public holiday) so expect the traffic volume to Pattaya to be high.

More pics updates from Pattaya Mata
Warning: pics might be disturbing

Can you summarize about this case so far?

Was the cause of the bad accident due to epileptic fit? Just to put this in right perspective. Imho, local media staple regularly covers accidents, crimes of passion, greasing the palms, govt/police guys moved to inactive posts etc.

Accident deaths due to claimed epileptic seizure reignites driving debate
nation December 05, 2017 01:00

A TRAGIC accident yesterday morning again focused the public’s attention on a call for the Land Transport Department to ban people with epilepsy from driving.

The crash occurred when a 44-year-old self-described epileptic patient lost control of his pickup truck in Chon Buri’s Pattaya City, causing it to plough into 10 motorcycles, killing two people and injuring 15 others.

At 7am, the vehicle driven by Akkaradej Udomrat, 44, suddenly veered out of its lane and collided with a line of motorcycles on the opposite side of South Pattaya Road. Two motorcyclists died at the scene while 15 others were injured – four of them seriously.

Police said Akkaradej had tested negative for alcohol use and claimed to lose control of his vehicle after suffering an epileptic seizure.

He was initially charged with reckless driving causing death and injuries to others and was in police detention at press time.

Muang Pattaya superintendent Pol Colonel Apichai Krobphetch said Akkaradej had also submitted to a drug test.

Police had also demanded his medical records to confirm his claim that he had been diagnosed with the disorder about five years ago after receiving a driver’s licence, Apichai said.

Dr Somsak Tiamkao, of Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine, wrote in a Facebook post that a law should be passed to prevent such tragic accidents.

“When will a law be passed to prevent epileptic patients from driving?” he asked. “Each year, we have many crashes involving epileptic drivers.

“Relatives and family members of these patients should take care of them. Please stop this, we are worried about you,” he said.

In 2014, a similar incident occurred when a Nong Bua Lamphu school director suffered an epileptic seizure while driving to another school and crashed into a group of students, resulting in the deaths of four schoolchildren deaths and 10 injuries.

The incident prompted the Land Transport Department and the Medical Council of Thailand to discuss changing requirements for drivers. A requirement was proposed that licence applicants would have to include a medical certificate to prevent people with heart disease, diabetes and epilepsy from driving.

The proposal has not been put into effect.

Land Transport Department deputy director-general Kamol Buranapong said the department was in the process of consulting with the Medical Council and drafting new health criteria for driving licences, which will include five new symptoms barring applicants from eligibility.

The five symptoms are epileptic seizures, high blood pressure, brain diseases, myocardial infarction and diabetes.

It has been estimated that Thailand has between 600,000 to 700,000 people suffering from epilepsy – a neurological disorder that could stem from various causes such as genetics, strokes or other brain trauma, infections, brain tumours or developmental disorders.

Symptoms can be varied and difficult to notice, resulting in some people not knowing they had the disorder and not receiving treatment, said Department of Medical Services Department chief Dr Somsak Akksilp.

People with epilepsy are up to six times more likely to suffer premature death from fatal road accidents due to seizures, he added.

PM mum on Yingluck UK passport talk

c1_1372495_171205041345_620x413.jpg

The latest completely unconfirmed report is that fugitive ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra is living in London, and is carrying a British passport.

  • Bangkok Post Published: 5/12/2017 at 04:00 AM
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has brushed aside a report that the United Kingdom has issued fugitive former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra with a passport despite admitting he had not received any information about the matter.

He also refused to comment on a message posted on Instagram on Saturday by Panthongtae Shinawatra, the son of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, that the Shinawatra family no longer wanted any involvement in politics, and longed to have the warmth of family life back.

Mr Panthongtae is facing legal troubles regarding money laundering accusations in connection with the Krungthai Bank loan scandal.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said it is normal practice in certain countries to issue (sell) passports to foreign investors, but added that he did not think the UK, which has strict immigration regulations, has such a policy.

Mr Don said the Foreign Ministry has not looked into the issue as its job ended with the revocation of Yingluck's passports and the investigation work has to be carried out by police.

Asked if Yingluck is residing in the UK, Mr Don said Thai authorities have still been unable to confirm her whereabouts.

When the report of the UK giving her a passport emerged, the Thai embassy in London checked the information with the British authorities and confirmed it to be false.

Mr Don said the government had not instructed the embassy to check the report and that the embassy had done so on its own initiative.

Asked if the Thai government will be informed immediately if Yingluck is granted a passport or asylum by any country, Mr Don said it is up to that country to decide whether to inform the applicant's country.

While UK ambassador Brian Davidson declined to comment Monday on the report, a official at the British embassy in Bangkok said the standard response from the mission's staff would be: "We do not comment on an individual's visa or passport."

Speculation about Yingluck's whereabouts has been rife since the embattled former premier fled Thailand three months ago to escape a five-year prison sentence -- handed down in absentia in September -- over her administration's role in the corruption-plagued rice-pledging scheme.

She was ultimately charged with criminal negligence in relation to government-to-government (G2G) rice sales and is believed to have fled two days ahead of the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Position's scheduled reading of its judgement on Aug 25.

Rumours swirled that she has been living with her elder brother Thaksin, another self-exiled former Thai premier on the run to avoid a corruption conviction, in Dubai while also seeking asylum in the UK.

Yingluck's current whereabouts remain a mystery.

The Foreign Ministry in October cancelled all passports held by Yingluck after she failed to appeal the Supreme Court ruling against her within the stipulated 30 days. These included two diplomatic passports.

The move is part of police attempts to bring the former prime minister back to serve her jail term.

Very big debate about the case and many doubtful points. The alcohol readings from breathe tester shows zero readings. Experts said its impossible to have zero readings even for a person who have not drink.

Eyewitnesses at the scene claims he mao. And if he kenna epilectic seizure why was he able to selectively avoid the bigger vehicles in his lane and choose to run through the motorcycles in the opposite lanes after hitting the first victim at Tuk Com which is few hundred meters from the junction.

Add this: Friend in Pattaya just updated less than an hour ago. Driver tested positive for illegal drugs.
