A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

Farang look like Indian or middle eastern?

Farang in Thai doesn't mean any foreigner but only white foreigner. Non-white foreigner is just foreigner, khon tang phrathet.

Ehh no leh, i was taught Farang = foreigners, just like Jap Gai-jin = Foreigners

Ramseth is right. Farang is only for Ang Mohs or Guai Lo and is actually not rude as most people think it's rude. Farang is also short for FarangSet (France) and also means Guava.

Japanese didn't give a fuck to color until they lost the world war. But yes, after the defeat in WW2, they hold white in higher esteem. but the traditional term gaijin remains for all foreigners. You go ask any Thai, whether you're farang or not? If you can show one says yes you're a farang, I chop.

khon tang phrathet <=== how you pronounce the last word?
Or Let me help romanize this
Khon Tang Pra Tet
Khon= People
Tang= Different
Pra Tet= Country.

A better one is to use Khon Tang Chart (direct translate People different nationality)

better someone manage before BosSam intervenes :(

Dunno leh, why everyone so edgy these few days. Khun, Ramseth, Scroobal (clone), Jah, all having a go at each other, lol

nuts even talking about farang want to argue. Is an ang moh foreigner more high classed than an asian or non white one like middle eastern, african and so on.

It's just different thai terms for people of different origin. As already pointed out, Pacific Asians are tang chart, whites are farang. There is a slightly derogatory term used for Middle-Easterners, Indians and black people: khek. Ordinarily, khek means guest e.g. hong rap khek is the living room (hong=room, rap=meet).

For the Japanese, as also correctly pointed out, they don't make a distinction - everyone else who's not them is gaijin. In polite conversation, they use gaikokujin. Japanese is like Thai language, you use different honorific words depending on the situation and the closeness and position of the person you're talking to e.g. the words and phrases you use with your son's kru (teacher) at school is different from ordering meatball noodles from a hawker.

Indian family sitting another table but they are locals.
Sawadee krap everyone! First post in this forum. Hope to contribute more in future.

Weather is very hot now in the Lion City + slew of bad news recently... Inflation up 5.2% in March, COE prices keep marching northwards, MRT breaking down again & again etc... no wonder everyone is more stressed so vice rings prosper coz citizens need a release ($600 upwards a pop! :eek:). Sorry I digress...

Local Indians (i.e. Thai citizens of Indian descent) are called "kek" or "guest". Its a borrowed Chinese word used in everyday pasa Thai like "Ah Hia" (old rich Chinese boss) or "tao hoo" (tow huay - soya bean curd).

As other bros said before "farang" is almost exclusively used for "Caucasian" aka "white people" though I was called a farang once at a shop in Siam Square when I spoke English to the guy attending to me. He turned to his female colleague and muttered "eh... farang". Didn't mind coz got served by a "suay sao". No derogatory intent coz "farang" is also the word for "guava". Not sure how that association came about.

Other non-Caucasian foreigners are referred to as "tan chart". They can call me anything they want just don't charge me "foreiger price" when visiting their national parks or clubbing in Bangkok.

Sawasdee Krup everyone. I am in Yuhang, a county under the administration of Hangzhou. Finishing my meeting by 12noon and then rushing to Pudong airport for my 5.25pm flight. Its a long way.
